Today we said goodbye to our wonderful cottage in Hahei and packed up for our trip across the peninsula to the town of Coromandel. The route isn't exactly major highways and we took the “309” road (which turns to a dirt road after a few km) up through the hills. Like many of these smaller roads, the 309 narrows considerably and hangs on the edge of steep hillsides. We stopped at a place called the Waiau Waterworks - an really cool combination amusement park - science lesson - art project. The owners must be artist turned Engineers (or the reverse) as the park is full of kinetic artwork that makes use of the stream that flows through the property. The park features a huge waterworks clock, an amazing zip line (known here as a flying fox) ... read more

We've just got back to Tauranga after spending a few nights in Coromandel town to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary!!! We left Tauranga late Thursday morning and worked our way slowly towards Coromandel. We stopped at Karangahake Gorge for lunch and had the most amazing date and oat cake. The road from Thames to Coromandel is about 50km long but it is very windy and right next to the sea with no barrier so we went pretty slowly!! The scenery was absolutely stunning to so we kept stopping to let Rob take photos. At one point a Police man took a photo of us.... Weird! When we eventually arrived at our accommodation, at about 4pm, we immediately fell in love with the place. We had booked Driving Creek Villas in advance and knew what to expect ... read more

Alice thought it a little strange to be flying from one country that we were only visiting to another, in a way it was but as they both spoke English we felt quite comfortable with it. So as we flew in from San Francisco to Auckland and crossed the Date line we arrived at a relatively quite airport in the wee hours after not getting too much sleep. On reflection back, New Zealand has been one of our least prepared stops to date, not counting the one night in Madrid we had on the ad-hoc with Keely and David. I think it was because i only ever thought of the trip as being a means to an end, an extended stop over between flights, so there we were just days into our big adventure and we ... read more

Sorry we haven't done our blog recently - we've been crazily busy making sure we saw as much as possible before leaving NZ...! In the last 2 weeks or so we've driven 4000Km and seen so much! It was knackering but worth it! So, we drove through the Tongariro National Park, past Mount Tongariro itself which is very impressive, all the way to Whakapapa Village... from here we went on a chairlift up Mount Ruapehu - an active volcanic ski mountain! - it was pretty chilly up there! Then we drove to our hostel near Hamilton where we stayed the night. The next day we went to the Waitomo Caves to see the glow worms that cover the roof of the cave like little greenish stars! Toby joined us in Hamilton that afternoon and we began ... read more

My time in New Zealand is sadly over, but having heard so many great things about the Coromandel Pennisula, I made sure to fit in a visit before I left the country. With only 4 days remaining I took a ferry from Auckland to Coromandel Town and organized a day to hike the Cormandel Walkway, which is at the tip of the pennisula and goes from Fletcher Bay to Stony Bay. I wish I could post all of my photos here, it was absolutely beautiful. I was fortunate to have nice weather and a lovely English couple to walk with. Along the walk we stopped at a little bay for lunch and decided to search for some shells. I found a beautiful cat's eye shell and then became obsessed with finding more just like it. I'm ... read more

Where to start? Well, i'm feeling much more cheerful now compared to the last time we spoke. I had a great time at Kiwi-burn and i've been traveling around the north island for the last few days with Flo and Sophia. Kiwi-Burn Awesome, simply. I arrived on tuesday and stayed for a week, leaving the following tuesday with a lift down to Levin with 2 of the people who had organised the festival. There were only 230 people or so there, with 40 people or so helping to set it up and clean up afterwards. It was initially intimidating as the other people who had arrived on the tuesday for set up (the festival itself lasted friday-monday) hadn't seen one another for a year or so, so there was a few hours of old friends catching ... read more

He's a 7 week old English Springer Spaniel. Or "Careve Claude", his pedigree name. (I wanted "Careve Claude d'Argaville" but was overruled) After a couple of weeks he is mostly well behaved, chipped, partly innoculated, and unremittingly cute. We are very proud to announce that he can climb stairs, tho not yet descend them. All single bloke blog readers take note - puppies are babe magnets. He gets alotta respect. All is well here. We are in the Coromandel, where the beer is cold and the weather mainly fine. Nick S dropped by sailing mid-week and after some rendez-vous difficultulties based on ambiguous local placenaming conventions we got together for dinner and an excellent sail with Mrs S and some friends of theirs. Andrew G is here also this week. Shootin' some trouble. I start work ... read more

YAYAYAY! I have a buddy! :) Mason FINALLY arrived after about 3 days of travel ;) Because of delays with luggage and rerouting, he arrived late on Saturday night, and of course I had a scotch on the rocks and bright smile waiting for him! At the Rendez-vous! Again, can't believe I found it, and good thing, the correct Ryan Mason arrived! :) The first thing he said as he looked out our window overlooking the city and the pool/gym was, "Awesome, look at that, do you want to go work out?" HA!~ So great to have him here! We went out to dinner, and were pretty disappointed with the food creativity as well as the service...it actually became a common theme around NZ! Our best meals were made in a 3x2 kitchen in the Tron! ... read more

Hi Everyone, When we left you we were in Kiakoura. This is the whale watching capital of NZ, and we duly boarded a very fast catamaran to go out finding whales. After 20 minutes underway we saw our fist whale, a young male sperm whale surfacing after a dive. They are quite remarkable creatures to see up close especially when they lift thier tail before diving. Sperm whales routinely dive to depths of 1000m to feed on squid and deep sea fish. This wasnt our only first that day, fpr the first time in our various travels both Claire and I got seasick! The swell on the ocean was big that day, and by the time we reached land we were both looking a little green. The East coast of the South Island was also the ... read more

(14/11/07) Collected our hire car a Nissan Pulsar and headed out of Auckland. We have bought a cycle rack so will be trying to buy some bikes somewhere too. Said our Goodbyes to our new found gang of mates and left. The drive was lovely winding along following the coast just above the water line. It is so beautiful here, and peaceful. We passed through Thames and ended up in Coromandel town. We arrived at 8pm but there is nowhere open. Nowhere to eat. the town is closed. Phoned my aunt in Rotorua to arrange a date to meet later in the trip. (15/11/07) Checked out and loaded up car, drove to a town called Whitianga via a notorious 309 road (where cars get broken into loads). We drove along the windiest (not wind like blowing, ... read more
