We visited Whakatane at the weekend to catch up with Dad and Aunty Bubbles. On the way down we visited Evans at Karipiro. Evans garden is looking fantastic, the roses are looking very healthy. Whakatane has had a number of nasty winter storms this year one dropping 90mm of rain in one hour. There was considerable damage done to the town. Down at the 'Heads' at the river mouth, during one of the big floods, the river cut another channel through the sandbank out to the ocean. Behind some very expensive houses a massive slip came down causing huge damage. Luckily no one was hurt, but all the residants of a number of houses have been evacuated as the remainder of the cliff is unstable and will probably come down in the next storm. On the ... read more

Last Friday was my last day at the Apata pack house and Thursday I will be leaving Tauranga with Anne, a Malaysian girl at the hostel who was also working at Apata and is looking to get to Wellington. We’re going to head up north to the Hot Water Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula first, before going to Lake Taupo. I thought it would be a good idea to do it now as I’m not sure if I’ll be on the eastern side of the North Island again, though the timing may be a little unfortunate as it will still be part of school holidays for the kids here so we may find the beach a little crowded when we get there. We had a barbeque this past weekend as an early farewell for me and ... read more

Hello again all! Not too much going on in my life since I last updated you, I had a bit of a bug (aching muscles, sore throat, headache, and a little feverish) and was off work for 2 days but I’m almost over it now and will be back at work on Monday. I went to the doctor a few days ago and was quite surprised how cheap it was, $55NZ for the consult with lasted about 30 minutes and was prescribed a weeklong course of antibiotics (Amoxicillin + Clavulanic) and a lot of painkillers (100 Paracetamol ! Like I’d ever use all of them) and sent me on my way. So a weeks course of amoxicillin is 3 pills a day, once every meal, totalling 21 pills and guess how much it cost… $3! That ... read more

There was an earthquake close to Christchurch a few days ago, I did not even feel it as I am on the north island. To the best of my knowledge it was a 7.4 and somehow there were no fatalities whatsoever! I will update again as any news arrives! PS: The pictured of the car have been uploaded on the previous entry.... read more

Hey everyone. Big news of the week is that I bought a car yesterday. It’s a 1989 Toyota Carona, previously owned by a German traveler who will be leaving New Zealand soon. I brought it to a mechanic to have it checked before buying it, and even though it’s not in the best condition, but the price was right enven if I did have to get $550 (all cash amounts are in NZ dollars) worth of work done to it. I paid $850 for the car, he originally wanted $1000 for it but after I explained the amount of money the mechanic said needed to be sunk into, he did agree to the lower price. It’s not the prettiest thing on the road, but it will get me from point A to B whenever I want ... read more

Hello family and friends, I’m still working at the pack house and will have 2 long weeks so I thought I’d update you while I had the chance. I’m still renting the car and will be until this Sunday when I’ll be thinking about buying a car (more on that as it happens). It’s not worth renting any longer and having my own transportation for the rest of the New Zealand portion of the trip will be a great advantage. The work here will probably last until the 3rd week of September, at that point I plan to go to Lake Taupo to do some stupid extreme sports stuff like skydiving and tramping (hiking for us North Americans) on some of the nicest tracks on the north island. Here are a couple of pictures from the ... read more

So I got another job while I was waiting on a call from the fish factory, I now work at a kiwi fruit pack house. The picking season is long since over, but they freeze huge amounts of them when they’re fresh and then pack them for sales throughout the winter. I’ve been working there for the past week and will probably have work until September. The days are long, usually 9.5 hours, but next week we work 4 x 12.5 hour days, not much of a social life, but the money could be worse (well technically not legally in this country since they pay us minimum wage, but the number of hours helps that). The pack house itself resides smack dab in the middle of a cell dead zone and the work phone can only ... read more

Hello everyone! I have a job now (if only an on call basis one) working at a fish factory. I had always thought that fish were caught out in the ocean, but apparently they just come out of a hole in the wall on a conveyor belt in this place. I can only assume that there is a massive workshop on the other side with cheap backpacker labour where they make the fish. They probably divide the workers into sections like bones, guts, meat, skin, final paint, and the job they all dream of one day having, the slime guy (as in the guy who gets to spray all the smelly fish slime on the finished work). The fish come out pretty fast too so either the people are working really fast, or they just have ... read more

Hello everyone! I’m still kicking here in Tauranga, New Zealand. A bit of bad news on the work front as we were laid off for lack of work. One of the bosses told us that there could possibly be some more work for the company up in Auckland, but that could be a few weeks from now, and it may only be for a couple weeks. As if the weather has decided to reflect the general mood, it’s started to pour yesterday and it looks as though it may continue on later today. It’s not too bad though, we signed up with a job agency called Trade Staff and they higher people for the fish factory. It looks to be our most likely employer in the near future. If it all goes pear shaped, to use ... read more

After a bit of luck we found a campervan that we absolutely love it.....a week ago we got it. We went to backpackers car market that was advertised in hostel where we stayed at. We found the place easily and it is located in area where there are lots of interesting shops such as op shops, tattoo shops, etc. Anyway, when we arrived there we thought that it would be hard to find something cos my husbands expectations are too high sometimes. We were helped by staff and bought beautiful Toyota Hiace campervan that we really liked. We did two checks before we bought it, legal and mechanical check and it came up with good results. Everything was sorted in 1 day. We transfered papers from sellers name to our name, purchased third party insurance and ... read more
