For the third time in my life, I landed at Auckland airport at about half past midnight excited about seeing the land of the long white cloud. Annoyingly for Clubby, who'd kindly agreed to collect me from the airport, I was late landing after fog saw me diverted through Brisbane instead of Sydney. It had been two years since I'd been to NZ, and in that time my friends Clubby and Stan (aka Mike and Rochelle!), who live in Auckland, had produced young Jacob, who was now six months old. Jacob was all smiles when I was introduced the next morning, but unfortunately for him, his vaccination was due, so Stan dropped me off at Ma and Pa's (aka Christine and John) while she took Jacob for his jabs. It was nice to have some time ... read more

As we drove nearer to Auckland, the surroundings became gradually more urbanised and then began to fade away as we passed through the other side. We reached Paeroa at the southern end of the Coromandel Peninsula and decided to call it a day for long distance driving and explore the area a bit. The town was small and fairly non-descript but did have a small supermarket at which we bought some bacon- the first in a long, long time- and subsequently fried it up down by the river side. I'm afraid we ate more than our fair share of bacon sandwiches that afternoon and couldn't face anything else for the rest of the day-it was were fantastic! We'd picked up a leaflet on local walks from the town i-site. An i-site is like a tourist information ... read more

Not quite so much driving today, which is just as well as it’s been incredibly sunny and hot (no complaints!) Having said that, we weren’t being particularly tardy either!! Firstly we set off for Karangahake Gorge, which was fairly spectacular, but almost impossible to photograph and then drove down to Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty, finishing up at Mount Maunganui which gave us the most beautiful views of the most stunning beaches. Maybe it was the blue sky and the bright sunshine, but they were really some of the best beaches we’ve seen. We stopped a while for drinks and route planning and for a chat with a lady selling some darling cross breed Jack Russell puppies - they were absolutely adorable, and I doubt she’ll struggle to sell them (I’d have had one if ... read more

Kiwi Fruit Capital of the World, or more accurately Te Puke- Arsehole of New Zealand. After 10 days in Tauranga and Mt Maunganui, enjoying the last week of the holiday we headed to Te Puke (pronounced Te Pucky) where we would split up; I would stay and work and Tim & Janet would carry on south. I checked into the hostel called ‘The Hairy Berry’ which was one of the dirtiest and most expensive places I’ve stayed so far; the only bonus was that they sorted out work and the other people there were all really nice. I was trying to get any kind of work for the first week with only one day kiwi picking from the week. After that I got in contact with a contractor who was from a Pacific Island called Kiribos ... read more

Arrived mid afternoon at Mount Maunganui (the mount as everyone calls it) was a really nice day and so went straight to the beach and lazed around for the rest of the afternoon. in the evening i met a french guy jerome who had been travelling around OZ for the last 2 years and had now come to NZ for the next year, we went out for a couple of drinks and then had an earlyish night. the following day i was up early and went to the beach and had a surfing lesson, surfing is the best thing in the world by the way, caught on pretty quick and was stood up catching waves by myself within an hour, the lesson itself was 2 hours and cost $60 which included a board and wetsuit hire ... read more

I just love the Camping Van life!! Rob is slightly less enthusiastic about it but he is definitely coming round to my way of thinking!! We picked the van up in Auckland after 3 great days staying in a beautiful contemporary apartment (for next to nothing) and exploring the city and Waiheke Island - Thanks Josie, for the tip off! We loved the island - beautiful beaches - and we happened on a nudist beach! We didnt realise untill we got there and looked up from our rock pool explorations! I suggested to Rob that we should swim, as the fact we did not have our cossies with us didnt matter in the least! but he was not as keen as me so we didnt!!An opportunity lost - but probably a big relief to the other ... read more

Summer continues to be very hot and dry around the upper North Island of New Zealand. Whakatane was very hot during the day but quite cool at night which was a blessing for sleeping. We visited Dad for the weekend to begin Graham's 70th birthday celebrations. We had a wonderful time visiting old haunts and then a fantastic dinner at the 'Fig' an amazing restaurant. The food was divine and the owner is a neat guy. He makes such a fuss of Dad and Aunty Bubbles. We visted Aunty Bubbles up on Hillcrest. She has an amazing garden and the view from her property is incredible. On our way home we stopped off in Hamilton at Rod and Shirley's and had the second celebration of Graham's 70th. We have a few more celebrations coming up over ... read more

Our next destination was a place called Whakatane, the main town in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. We needed to charge up the camera batteries, so opted for a luxurious powered site, something we haven't had yet on our tour. As it had taken the whole day to drive there from Gisborne, we played cards in our tent (with the light on!) then went to bed. We had booked onto a day trip to New Zealands most active volcano, White Island. It was a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride from Whakatane, one of the most horrible journeys we've ever done! Right from the beginning we both felt sea sick, and Dan even delighted everyone with a second viewing of his noodle-omelette breakfast. On the plus side we did see loads of dolphins swimming alongside the boat, ... read more
