Hello everyone! Kerstin and I are now employed full time at a landscaping company! It is very relieving to have a steady job with hourly pay, something about knowing how much money you’re going to get at the end of the week is just nice. The work is physically demanding, but not a great deal more than what is required for kiwi fruit picking and pruning. We only work weekdays so Saturdays and Sundays are time for rest and relaxation (and updating everyone back home). We’ve been doing the landscaping at criminal youth rehabilitation centre that is currently under construction, most of the work is just planting small plants and covering them with week mats, but yesterday and the day before we were laying turf. More accurately, I was hauling the turf off the pallets, the ... read more

Hello again everyone, long time no update I know. We’re still waiting on the pruning to start up here in Tauranga. In the time we’ve been waiting we’ve gone on a few nice hikes that were only a short drive from the city. The first was to a long path called the Aongatete Loop where we had a nice if hilly walk through forest. There was a little confusion about where the path actually went, as there were a few water crossings without bridges (slippery moss covered stones were there though!) and a few portions of path that were hidden by fallen trees, but we got to were we’d planned to be in the end. Timo and I went ahead at an unclear water crossing (unclear because half the stones you were supposed to walk on ... read more

A few days before I climbed to the top of Mount Manganui! Ines, Katja, Timo, and I went along the main path with another German couple (Alana and Tobias) form the hostel. Anika and Kerstin decided to skip the climb as they had both done it on an earlier occasion. The hike to the top took about 45 minutes and we got very lucky as the weather stayed nice long enough for us to get back to the hostel before it started to dump. We split off of the main path close to the top of the mountain to follow what we decided to call the extreme trail (trail being a very strong word for this little rut in the side of the mountain) and got to the top before Alana and Tobias. The view from ... read more

So I’m 23 now! It was my first birthday out of the country but it was pretty fun. Being older, wiser and much more responsible than that of my 22 year old self, I had to go to work the whole day. Kiwi fruit picking isn’t what I’d call the most exciting event to attend for a party, but the German girls (Kerstin, Anika, and Lisa) made me a batch of chocolate and caramel muffins, which we all partook in at our lunch break. After the picking was done, we got back to the hostel and got cleaned up, and went out for a late pub dinner. Being the only non-German speaker of the bunch, there were a couple times I was less than totally aware of where the conversation was going (not that that is ... read more

I am happy to be employed and I’m even more happy about the fact that I’m doing something that can be called Kiwiana (think Canadiana). However, picking kiwi fruit is fairly hard work. You throw a harness over you shoulder with a large wire reinforced bag that rests in front of your stomach, and start picking your way through the orchard. The vines are supported by wires strung along posts that have been set wide enough apart for a tractor and trailer to drive between. The tractors pull 3 4’x4’x2.5’ bins and we fill them as quickly as possible. We get paid $12 New Zealand per bin after tax, but it doesn’t matter how many people are working on them. 12 people working means $1 per person per bin. The fewer the people the bigger the ... read more

Hey everyone, Whangarei was a bust for the job market so Kerstin and I have traveled down to Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty (not to be confused with the Bay of Islands). The hostel we’re staying at is called, I kid you not, “Just the Ducks Nuts” which just about made me spit out the water I was drinking (a similar incident happened when I had to explain to Kerstin and a girl from France named Julie what marital aid meant ) when I was told it was a viable option for our stay in the Bay of Plenty. There was a nice walk to a waterfall and through a little bit of Kauri forest (forest is a strong word as there were less than a dozen Kauri trees) and along the river back into ... read more

85, what a great age, especially arriving at that age with very good health. Well done Dad and Grandad you are an inspiration to all the family. You have been very moderate in the way you have lived your life, what you have eaten and the fact that you have not been one to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes. As you say you have also been blessed with great genes. The flip side to all of the above is the way that you have been one to take all sorts of risks with your life. Of course you would say that they were calculated risks!!!! You are like a cat you have been blessed with nine lives!!! How many times on the farm did you fall off your horse, been kicked, stomped on by various animals, ... read more

What a wonderful weekend we had celebrating Bill's 85th birthday. Chelle, Joel, Tayla and Jamie flew down from Auckland for the weekend. The family stayed over at Ohope Beach at a wonderful Motel called Jodies on the Beach. We all went out on the Saturday night to the Fig Restaurant in Whakatane. We had a great evening and the food was lovely. Aunty Bubbles joined us for the evening. The girls enjoyed themselves at the beach and at the parks in Whakatane. We had many laughs, when it was suggested that Graham piggy back Tayla she considered it very carefully and then said' Graham might collapse if he piggy backed her' She also suggested to Grandad that if he straightened his back he would be taller!!!!! We also saw where all the Monarch Butterflies go to ... read more
