4th April 2009 - ALCOHOL IS EVIL!!! I woke at 8am and have never felt so bad in my entire life...no exaggeration!! I spoke briefly with Nat and then we both rolled over as neither of us could face getting up for breakfast. We could not move!! I had some water but felt so sick! Surely another couple of hours sleep would cure me as I don’t usually get hangovers at all!! At 11am, Nat got up and headed to the beach. I was still in a bad way and could not move. I felt like I had been hit by a bus! I snoozed on and off the whole day until 4pm when I made myself get out of bed and go for a cold shower. The shower in the pitch black (no electric until ... read more

3/4/09 = The Luxurious Mana Lagoon Woke up spritely at 7am after a really good nights sleep. V.excited for our island hopping which starts today, with Mana Island, in the Mamanuca group. Got ready, packed up and went for breakfast at 8:45. Got the same pancakes and they were the same beautiful. Dragged bags out of room then, checked out and waited for boatman to pick us up at 8:15. 2 other German girls were waiting too, so chatted to them until he came. We all got into mini van then and an English couple also jumped in at last minute. Van headed into town then and dropped us off at a hostel on beach front. Thought we would be getting boat straight away, but turned out that we had to wait until 10am and he ... read more

3rd April 2009 - FIJI TIME, COOL PEOPLE & TALENT QUEST NIGHT!!! I had the best nights sleep since the start of travelling I think. I did not wake up once until my alarm went off at 7am...felt so good!! I got dressed, packed up and went with Nat for breakfast. We tucked into tasty pancakes...mmmm!! The bus was due to pick us up at 8.30am. Another 4 people on the bus with us - Alan and Kirsty (an English couple) and 2 German girls (nice enough). The bus was a little late but apparently that is the norm in Fiji as everyone is on 'Fiji time' whatever that means. When the bus did arrive it took us to Smuggles Cove (a beach front hostel) where we waited for other travellers to be picked up as ... read more

Bula! Greetings from Mana Island! After 25 grueling hours of traveling from NY, a layover in LA, connecting to Nadi, Fiji and a ferry ride later, I am finally here! I was so tired I barely knew what day it was, especially with the whole hopping over the international dateline maneuver, so I checked into my romantic island bure for one at the Mana Island Resort, ate lunch, and passed out on the beach. It is gorgeous down here! Clear turquoise waters, white sand, and everything tropical island dreams are made of. And the beaches at the resort come with lounge chairs under thatched straw umbrellas that kept me from burning to a crisp while completely out cold that first day. So after peeling myself off the beach and wiping the line of drool off my ... read more

Today was mostly hangover but this was helped by a quick dip in the sea. The cool, clear water was an excellent solution to the throbbing head. We managed some breakfast and then sat around chatting and attempting to fill in the details from the night before. At 11.30am we said our good byes to the people who were leaving and welcomed in the next visitors. The day was very chilled and we just hung around on the beach with the occasional game of frisbee or volleyball. The evenings entertainment was cross-dressing and a Miss/Mr World Competition. Mark and Dale quickly jumped at the chance to dress as women and were soon in their full attire, make-up and all! The evening was great and Mark was very pleased with his joint 3rd placement. We were all pretty excited as we had heard nothing but good things about Mana Island and we were ready for some serious beach time and rum consumption! After our breakfast we made a quick booze trip to the supermarket and stocked up for the next few days. We decided to travel light and left our big bags behind and took a minibus to the coast. After paying for our trip and boat we boarded the rather small boat to Mana Island. The trip was supposed to take around 45 minutes but on the way the captain received a phone call. Apparently one of his friends on another boat had run out of fuel and had no anchor so were floating out in the ocean. We went searching for them but were unsuccessful. We eventually arrived ... read more

Bulaaaaaaaaaaaaaa everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello everyone, I really liked Fiji, was so amazing we went to two islands. The first one was Beachcomber the sun, sea, sand and food were just perfect. However, it was owned by a man from New Zealand so even though i was in fiji i felt it was more of a show, as the fijian workers were in uniforms and the food was suited to the english diet. however the island itself was very fiji like! The next island we went to was Mana, which was a island which was just occupied by fijians we were some of the only english, we lived in a shack run by fijians and lived how the locals lived and we absolutly fell in love with the place. We were so welcomed, every night we were shown different fijian ... read more

Day 181 - Wednesday 19 March Russ bank card didn´t arrive so it looks like i´m off to the islands on my own. After waiting around for ages finally the boat arrived to take me to Mana island. With other islands nearby with names like Treasure Island and Robinson Crusoe island it should be a mini paradise. Its also close to the island where they filmed Castaway (The Tom Hanks version). It certainly looked great as the boat passed by all these deserted islands. Unfortunately the sea turned really choppy as we hit a mini storm and I ended up totally drenched. On arrival we were greeted by some Fijian welcome performance but I was cold and wet and wanted to get changed so I didn´t appreciate it perhaps how I should have done. Although overcast ... read more

One of the problems with visiting these regions filled with tropical islands is trying to figure out which island to visit! They all look so nice its so hard to choose… Thankfully in Fiji we had some help at the tourist office and choose Mana Island where we were to spend 4 days. It was described as a beautiful island with great beaches and snorkelling, with a tiny local community so we could actually get to meet some locals. It turned out to be a very accurate description, but they forgot to mention that the people there are fantastic! People were so friendly and welcoming that at first our suspicious backpackers’ minds were convinced they had an ulterior motive… But they didn’t, they were just great people who were happy to have us visit their island ... read more
