Right so this about the 10th time I've tried to write this god damn blog, I think it’s official that I am the world’s worst blogger ever!!! After going on about it for ages before leaving I have failed to keep you updated so I’m going to do my best to fill you in and make more effort in future! I've had to borrow a laptop off one of my new pals so I didn't have to waste valuable internet time typing coz this is gona be a long one!!! As I mentioned in my last blog there was v little internet access on the islands in Fiji, which it would appear can't spell?! (thanks Caspar/Laura!) Not sure what thats about but I looked back through my journal and realised I've been spelling in FIGI instead ... read more

If you want to see the real Fiji, i.e. the one from the post cards, you have to get away from the mainland and head to the surrounding islands. We took the trip to Mana Island, part of the Mamanuca chain to the west of the country, about an hour by boat from Nadi. The island is a small thin outcrop of sand & palm trees with two hills at either end. The sands are pure white and when the sun is shining and the tide is in it every bit resembles the picture of tropical paradise. We stayed in a place called Mana Lagoon, the cheapest place to stay on the island. It was very basic. The shower was little more than a cold water tap mounted to the wall. The electricity was only on ... read more

Wowzas! What a great time I had in Fiji. I'm now in Byron Bay, Australia, but wanted to send over some updates. Internet was a little hard to come by, or a fast connection anyway, so I'll do my best to rehash the past for ya. It's been a whirlwind of fun. Day 1 (5/26): We travel about 22 hours from Austin, TX and arrive in Mana about 9 or 10am. Immediately we relax with a beer. Caitlin relaxes at our hostel's beachside picnic tables and I played volleyball. Immediately everyone is so welcoming and friendly. I met a super nice German, Ben and an English girl, Rebecca. She introduces me to a few of her other friends and the train of friend meeting continues. Caitlin heads to be early and I stay up and watch ... read more

SUN - Got the bus to the airport with Dave, had food then said goodbye to him. Plane was delayed a bit but I didn't actually realise until the lass sitting next to me on the plane said it was annoying! Ha! Shows how much attention I pay in airports, it's a wonder I get anywhere! Lass was a really nice, chatty kiwi, I now have aplace to stay and a curry to eat in Auckland if ever I need it :) She lent me her lonely planet so I could read up on Fiji on the way over. When we landed there was a Fijian band playing for us as we collected our bags :D Heard someone shout my name and Tasha appeared infront of me :) Yay! I'm in Fiji with Tasha! Got a ... read more

6th APRIL 2009 - SNORKELLING, GOODBYE ALABAMA & DOG CHASE!! I slept well and felt fine when I woke at 7am. I stayed in bed until around 7.40 and then strolled across to the hall for breakfast. Usual table and 1st in line...no messing!! Breakfast was good again but not for my waistline....pancakes, syrup, bananas, bread and juice! Carb overload!! Pretty much all of us made breakfast except Theresa. Nat had a wake up call from a mouse in our room...nice!! Everyone knackered though as most didn't go to bed until around 3am unlike myself who was tucked up at 1am. Such a different story from the first night there!! Following breakfast I took a pew on the beach with Orla and eventually everyone else came and joined us too. Our winning quiz team claimed our ... read more

6/4/09 = The last night in Mana Lagoon .... and also the end of Lent. No biscuit goal achieved :) Woke up at 7:30 hot and shattered. Lack of sleep = nearly created the hangover effect. Really should have gone to bed earlier. Scraped out of bed and trapsed off to breakfast = easily most exciting meal of day…hope is pancakes again. Was only me and Deb in the whole hall at first, which I was pretty impressed with to say I was one of last people up. Strolled straight up to buffet table and got first picks at everything; that made it worth getting up early. Allan soon came to join us, followed by everyone else in turn, Alabama last; he looked as shocking as me. Chatted, ate yummy breakfast = pancakes, bananas and syrup, ... read more

5/5/09 = The 5 island hop and a church visit. Got up at the same old early time. There’s no sleeping in at Mana…electricity cuts off at 6am (is only on from 6pm to 6am each day), which means fan cuts off, which in turn brings instant heat that only takes a couple of minutes to smother you and wake you up. Did doze for a little while afterwards, but then got up and got ready for 8am breakfast. Woke Allan and Kirtsy on way and all sat together for food, as usual. First breakfast on Mana so far - having missed it yesterday due to a hangover - and wow...what a breakfast. It was actual, normal food. Pancakes...banana...syrup...bread...even nice little muffin types cakes. Wow. Piled plate up and ate until felt like belly was going ... read more

th April 2009 - AMAZING DAY & QUIZ NIGHT WINNERS!!! I was awake at 6am this morning - so hungry and not surprisingly considering I only had one meal the previous day! I got out of bed at 6.50 as I thought breakfast was at 7am. Turned out it was 7am Fiji time which actually meant 8am!! 1 hour to wait! I sat and wrote my journal for an hour until a few other people surfaced and then took my spot on the front table ready to tuck in. Breakfast was good! Pancakes, fruit, bread, cake, tea and juice. Stodgy but tasty and in a different league to the other meals on Mana. I would not make the mistake of missing breakfast again! Our entire group actually made breakfast that morning! Good effort! We tried to ... read more

4/4/09 = A lazy day with Fijian dancing Wasn’t a good night’s sleep, but never is after drinking! Poor Deb was sick all night and I rolled over feeling not too hot! Why do we drink? Definitely couldn’t face breakfast…especially not a Mana style breakfast…so rolled over to try the sleep cures all problems trick. Re-opened eyes at 10am. Still feeling positively dodgy, but not sick…yeh! Deb on other hand = really not good. Had been sick all night and in some v.unfortunate places…her poor handbag took the brunt of it…oops. She definitely wasn’t going anywhere, but me belly so empty, had no choice but to move. Crawled out of bed, scraped clothes on and dragged myself off to main hall to see how everyone else was doing. Nearly everybody was already up and they all ... read more
