I awake and immeditely clutch for support, looking at the floor literally feet below me. Im in the top bunk of a run down room in the Ascot Stonegrill Backpackers. I jump down from the bunk and check out the hostel. Since I arrived in the middle of the night I havent yet had a chance to see the facilities. I chat to the operator of the Hostel in the downstairs bar (this place is also a restaurant and hotel) and she shows me an article on the famous stonegrilled steaks on offer. After all this is Rockhampton - the beef capital of Australia and the only real thing of note about Rocky, as the town is affectionately know to the locals. It's also home to the University of Central Queensland - but this is of ... read more

Wednesday started off real early (for us.) We managed to get out of the hotel by 8 am and did a "walkabout" around the neighborhood called the rocks. We ended up at a little place called the Gumnut cafe. It was a really old, built in the 1800's. The backyard was converted into an eating area courtyard. We stayed inside because it rained earlier and was damp. The food was pretty good. Jason and I are sticking to tea here cuz getting cream is tough to say the least. Even starbucks doesn’t have it. After breakfast we went down to the ferry docks and took a Harbour cruise that also included entry to the Taronga Zoo. While waiting for the ferry we walked down to the opera house. pretty impressive place when you're standing beside it. ... read more

Well, so far Perth/Western Australia has been brilliant! We have been here for 4 weeks now and have really enjoyed ourselves. We love Australia! As explained in the other blog we have been staying with Rachael and Josh for the past 3 weeks so we have been catching the train around to different places nearby. We were going to rent a car but it works out quite expensive and the train is so cheap! We've been to the popular beaches - Scarborough Beach and Cottesloe Beach and also paid a visit to Hillary's Harbour and Fremantle for the day. Scarborough Beach and Cottesloe Beach are beautiful. I didnt expect the water to be so clear and blue or the sand to be so white. The beaches definitely come close to Thailand beaches - only the water ... read more

We arrived in Melbourne yesterday-our flight was delayed by 3 hours as they found drugs in the toilet on the plane before we boarded! Our first flight with Quantas was much better than Cathay-glad we have a few more flights with them! We went to the Classification games for Men's Basketball yesterday Scotland V South Africa, Semi Finals for Womens Basketball New Zealand V England. I don't really know much about basketball but we still managed to get into the games! Virtually the only British fans in the Crowd! Today we went to the Athletics, track and field, it was still very exciting, though not as engaging as the BB games. We are staying at the Base hostel in St Kilda, in the Sanctuary room (girls only), in one of the best areas to stay in ... read more

I'm in Australia!!! I was so excited about coming here that I was worried it wouldn't exceed my expectations but it has! I know everyone says Australians are really friendly, but they really really are! Even at customs and baggage claim at the airport they had a conversation with you and we're really friendly which I have never experienced in any airport! And everythings so organised and efficient (which I probably feel more as we've just come from Asia). When we arrived, we got a bus to the hostel (Base) which is really lovely. They did mess up our booking though and I'm in a dorm by myself (well without Patrice and Charlene) and they're in the one next door. The dorms are called The Sanctuary dorms for girls only were you get free Aveda products ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hamilton Island March 22nd 2006

Miranda invited me out for a meal, drink and to watch the festival acts at the Sydney Myer Music bowl. Met up with Lauren and two other girlys, (Aus & English), and popped into a Risoteria for a boisterous meal with lots of laughs and the odd bottle of red. It was all very Sex In The City for some reason, especially as at our special request to the manager we got upgraded to seat on the balcony with lovely views of the river and city. Eventually found some seats in the bowly thing and sat down to watch what turned out to be the most spectacularly moving collection of contemporary dance pieces I've ever seen! I swear, I'm a total convert, previously I'd seen con. dance as just that, an excuse for some irregular jiggling, ... read more
