Perth is a long way from anywhere and has a slightly isolated appeal. However the air is crystal clear, there are blue skies, sunshine and a wonderful coastline plus many places to visit in South West Australia. The CBD is situated on one side of the Swan River and there are very pleasant riverside walks on the other side with good views of the city skyline. We spent many hours walking along the river enjoying the parkland and river scenes. We visited Elizabeth Quay and pottered around the newly developed area near the Perth Bell Tower. We went to a superb exhibition (courtesy of the British Museum) at the Art Gallery. This described the history of the world by looking at 100 historic objects. Perth Mint was also worth a visit. This opened I 1899 to ... read more

Perth Hills are very close to the city and worth exploring. Kalamunda is a pleasant small town to visit and there is a pleasant drive along the Mundaring Weir Road next to Kalamuda National Park. There are scenic viewpoints from the dam along Lake O'Connor. The amazing feat to collect and supply water to Kalgoorlie 650km away is highlighted with a statue of C Y O' Connor one of the great civil engineers in Australian history. Scarborough is also close to Perth city and has a nice beach but not as grand as Scarborough in the UK! New Norcia is an old monastic settlement around 2 hours North of Perth. We enjoyed lunch at the hotel then visited the museum and art gallery. We viewed the monastery memorabilia . European art and an exhibition of botanic ... read more

A lovely place to stretch the legs and enjoy pleasant walks through parkland and gardens. There are plenty of seats and shady areas to stop and have a rest. The park cafe is well situated for refreshments. We spent an afternoon in the park then got a free bus into central Perth. As the heat of the day reduced we walked home past the WACA cricket stadium over the Swan River and home to Victoria Park.... read more

Our son Martin took us on a drive up the Swan Valley which was very enjoyable. It was another very hot sunny day with clear blue skies. The Guildford tourist information Centre were very helpful and described the local area and what we could visit and do. We set off on the 36km wine trail visiting 3 wine companies, Ugly Duckling, John Kosovich and finally Houghtons. The first two were smaller producers, Houghtons was a larger business and we shared a large lunchtime platter at their restaurant, with a nice glass of wine of course! This is an excellent way to spend a half or a full day. It is also much nicer to purchase a few bottles of wine direct from the cellar door rather than from the supermarket or bottle shop.... read more

As most of you are probably all aware we were house sitting over the Christmas Break in the east of Perth for some friends we know through the Toyota Landcruiser Club. We have house sat some great properties and they all have there little quirks that make them unique and this was no exception. Our brief is usually the same, but it depends what is important to the house owner, this time this time we had some added responsibility with two dogs, two horses, two chicken, seven Weiro’s and a cage full of budgies, far too many to count. Now the horses were no bother and I just love horses, there is always something so calming about horses and these two guys were no exception. Oscar and Spirit did not belong to Trevor and Ria but ... read more

My intention when I first flew out to Australia was to blog my entire experience. A weekly or at least fortnightly post would do. Funny jokes, comments, people we have met, things I would otherwise forget if I didn't write them down. Plus, it would let people know I am still alive out here. I kept up with my blog for the first four weeks and wrote a wopping 4 entries. Then, I completely lost track of it and it was only this week, 3 months down the line that I remembered I was going to do it in the first place. This made me realise that it isn't going to be as consistent as I once thought. The past 3 months we have met some awesome people. We befriended a couple of English lads called ... read more

Friday 5 Feb A lazy morning as we try to adapt to the 3 hr time difference. We then had a tour of a part of Perth and headed for Subiaco where we had a delicious Vietnamese/Malaysian meal. Mike had a spring roll dish and I had a seafood Laska, a type of soup with jasmine rice and noodles. We then went around the Kings' Park area which has beautiful views over the CBD. In the evening we went to Fremantle about a 30minutes drive away. A quirky town with colonial type architecture and interesting waterfront. After fish & chips and a beautiful sunset we returned home.... read more

Geo: -31.9522, 115.861So here we are all together in Perth, some jet lagged but all fine. Slight consumption of beers last night and a bottle of champers including a failed lighting of the BBQ. Thank god for a grill etc indoors.Time to make plans as today will be a warm 36c.first stop, Pinnaroo cemetary to see the kangas. Given the heat, they are very lazy and hidden in the shade. Us muppets on the other hand wander around in the blazing sunshine.next stop. Matilda bay for a well deserved refreshment and light lunch at the tea rooms. Josh is struggling a little, both from tiredness and heat. Bless him he soldiers on as we move onto kings park, take photos like everyone else that's been to see the amazing views and do the treetop walk and ... read more

Our hearts go out to the people in Yarloop and Waroona, townships south of Perth who are at the hands of mother nature due as a massive fire that has ripped through their towns At present 121 homes have been destroyed and 68,000 hectares of land has been burnt, which is 80mtimes the size of Perth The fire front as of last night was 200 kilometres long and is being fort by many amazing men and women who are trying to contain this monster, these are the worst fires Perth has seen or 50 years. We are right in the middle of summer and the W.A ground is tinder dry and this fire was ignited by lightning As a precaution we have hitched Jack and Roobie together and put a grab back together if we need ... read more

Look closely, you might think I made a spelling mistake, but this is no mistake. It's New Year's Eve and we had big plans for today and a night out with friends to celebrate the New Year ahead. The week so far had been pretty exhausting, the heat had been tough on all of us, not to mention that one of the bedrooms was so hot, the one without the air conditioning so we had to move a mattress in the living room for our friends to get the benefit of the air conditioning. Meanwhile we spent the night in Roobie to take advantage of the built in air conditioning. Back up at the house we were greeted by the dogs that we have been looking after, a Rottweiler and a Beagle, an unlikely pair of ... read more
