Today I am in Perth on Australia's west coast and it is my first full day without Maggie. I missed her all day. I kept thinking she would enjoy some aspect of what I was seeing and a couple of times I even started to turn around to say something to her. At least I got to Skype with her this morning (Thursday morning here, Wednesday afternoon there). I was up early because my circadian rhythm is still on Sydney time. After breakfast I walked down to the bell tower, a landmark on the waterfront (see photo), where I caught the free bus that took me to King's Park. This is a large green space that overlooks the city and also serves as a site for memorials - war and otherwise. I took a number of ... read more

Today was a sad day for Maggie and me because we had to go our separate ways this morning. We packed our suitcases and took a taxi to the airport. Then Maggie checked in for her Air Canada flight east, back to Portland. I stayed with her as long as I could, but had to leave her at security. We said goodbye and will be in touch by Skype until I am back in Portland, too. I took the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal where I boarded a Qantas flight west to Perth. The flight took nearly five hours to fly from Australia's east coast to the west coast. It is a long way - nearly as far as flying across the width of the United States. I have checked into my hotel here and ... read more

I have been lucky to visit a number of countries as part of work. Until 2010, I had barely ever crossed the equator to the southern hemisphere. But between then and now, I have visited Australia (or more specifically Perth) nearly five times. Having lived on a cab for most part during these visits, I have a good understanding of the country, especially from a first timers' point of view. Here is a holistic overview of the city. In my next blog post, I will take you through the more finer aspects of the city, right from the tourist attractions, to the pubs and night life. Weather Perth has an amazing weather, especially for a Canadian tired with the cold conditions back home. Well, that’s for most parts of the year. January and February are summer ... read more

Well it has been quite some time and at least 4 months since my last blog as I was waiting until Pete and I had settled into jobs here before publishing an update. However, jobs for Pete were not that forthcoming and even though he finally secured one this week, he has turned it down as we have decided to head back to Darwin at the end of April when our house sit here comes to an end. I have been working for Travelex once more and hope to get a transfer back to Darwin if at all possible. Pete has been in touch with his old boss up there and is hopeful that he will be taken on again on his return. We are looking forward to getting back on the road and do miss ... read more

I have been in Australia almost a month now. How on earth am I supposed to tell you all about this beautiful country and its towns and cities in just one blog post? I guess I will have to pick and choose my favourite moments. There are a lot of them, so I would like to apologize in advance if this post seems a little overwhelming and a little piecemeal, but I will do my best to stay on track. I have been taking little notes here and there, so that I do not forget everything after I leave a place. With that being said, let me get started! I am currently in Perth, Australia and am having the most amazing time. This city is full of life, love, beauty, and adventures. I can actually see ... read more

Can't hear myself think........not jet-lag, the noise of a huge firework display for the Perth Festival. Breakfasted at Yallingup, in the company of a couple of bright green parrots! Then we headed back to Perth, about a 3 hour journey, even with Rae driving a good part of it (I had a bad night - jet lag or sunstroke?). Had a good run back to the hotel before heading off to Kings Park which provided some amazing views over the city - see pics. Rae treated me to an ice cream. Don't know what I did to deserve that! Chatted toJames on the phone before going to mass in St. Mary's Cathedral just up the road - beautiful church, made all the more significant that Frank was being buried in St. Mary's Larkhall around the same ... read more

Hi. got picked up by Peter of Mikey's Taxis at 04.45 on Tuesday. Good run to Heathrow, took off on time and had a comfortable Tipton Dubai - big airport! Nearly an hour late leaving but still arrived at Perth Airport at 12.45 local time. Got shuttle bus into town - cheapskate! Arrived at the Good Earth hotel 2'sh - OK but not wonderful. Slept for before walking into town - wanted an Aussie SIM card. But Blackberry lock the Sim, and after some tooing and froing, ended up a new cheap phone and some pay as you credit. Had a wander round Perth but didn't do it justice as we were pretty shattered - some picks attached...........but I must admit that I find the iPad camera hard work: must be my age that causes the ... read more

Having spent the majority of our trip on the East Coast partying, exploring and err…partying, we flew over to the West Coast. Thinking Australia couldn’t get any more expensive, we landed in Perth. Arriving in Perth, it was cold and wet but refreshing to be in a new place. We spent the next few months working -yes, I haven’t forgotten how. We were worked in a swimming pool shop testing water samples and selling chemicals - might be a bit of a stretch to add chemist to my resume now! To relieve the stress of working an almost full time job (I said, almost) we escaped to some beautiful beaches, went on trips to gorgeous islands, wineries and some 4 wheel driving - and yes Mum, i wore my seatbelt. My first Christmas away from home, ... read more

Well a cousin of Thomas' no doubt; the mighty Indian Pacific which we joined in Sydney for the trip to Perth, a journey of three nights and four days across this great country of ours and covering a total of 4352 kms. It's a return trip which Kev won so we decided to spend a week in the West; no point in just going there and back! This will be our third trip on Thomas' cousin although this time it's hotter than it has been on the previous occasions we've done the trip. It's around 45 degrees outside so lucky we're in air conditioned comfort. I can't say that I slept very well on our first night; too much noisy rocking and rolling for my liking. So it wasn't too much of an effort to get ... read more
