We got an early start outta Albany and headed the scenic route to Denmark. Other then roadworks, this road is the most prettiest drive. The fields and valleys are all amazing. We stopped in Denmark out at Ocean Beach, went down to check out the surf. It's a hot stop for the local surfers, so we took it all in and thought , we should have allowed more time so Sandy and I could get out there, the waves were only a couple of foot, but the beaches are beautiful and the waves had some form (next time for sure, or even a weekend getaway for those in Perth ,hint hint - Justine and Tones) Once outta Denmark and heading towards Walpole, the trees take on a form of their own, growing extremley tall in this ... read more

Saturday 21st March When we reached Steve & Kerry’s we found a note on the gate telling us to make ourselves at home and to be careful not to damage the van going up the track to the house. Steve had been very thoughtful and sawn low branches off and generally cleared the way. We had no problems! After set-up, Judy had a rest as she still not right, whilst Rags climbed the hill to the back paddock where Steve was building a shed next door to the house he built for his daughter. Interesting house, octagonal, with lots of windows and views all the way to the coast. He spent some time helping Steve and his daughter, Shannon, put some iron cladding up, until he called it a day. Kerry returned soon after from her ... read more

For being apart of the Environmental Program with CIEE, the five of us got to go on a Regional Trip together to Denmark in the South West of Western Australia. It is a three day trip where we will be staying at the Centre for Sustainable Living. Day One: The day started out early where we all piled into a van and headed off to Denmark. The Centre is really quite impressive. It has passive solar design, solar panels for space heating, on site waste water management, their own wetland and probably so much more that I don't remember. It is a really interesting place to show you how green you can really become. There are several room that we each grabbed and through our bags in and then we headed out to the beach. A ... read more

When the alarm went off I did my best to persuade Matt that getting up now was a bad idea and we’d be much more productive if we had a bit more sleep. He agreed and we finally got up an hour and a half later feeling much better. When we opened up the curtains we saw that it was raining and cloudy. It was the first rain we’d seen on the west coast and it was a shock. The weather had been getting cooler since crossing the tropic line and even though I wasn’t cold in long shorts and a t-shirt, it was hardly the bikini weather we’d been used to. We’d managed to make up some time by doing longer journeyes and staying less time at some places so it meant we now had ... read more

Today we drove from Albany to Denmark and camped at the Ocean Beach Caravan Park, where the river meets the sea. The water went right up to the road! Went to the local wildlife park called " Pentland Alpaca Stud and Tourist Farm". Got to see and cuddle Koala's, kangaroo's, sheep, Alpaca's ( so so soft ) and LOADS of bunnies!!! There was also a very mad very pregnant sheep!!! Just before we left the owner decided to let us hold a 7 month and a 3 month old baby orphan roo's that had been saved from a car accident. They were so gorgeous! Did you know... the mother Roo carries the babies in her pouch until they are 18 months old??!!!! The 7 month was the weight of a 4 month baby! Imagine at 18 ... read more

Oct 16 Love the Peppermint Eco Caravan Park!! Booked on the BushTucker Wine tour. Small group of 11. Guide/driver was fabulous with tidbits of area history & information on the flora & fauna. Visited 4 wineries, 1 distillery, chocolate factory and cheese outlet. All great. Lunch was made up of various bush tucker and seeing that Gary & I were the furthest away we got to try a whole wichitty grub. Not bad, but better blended into a dip. The grub was dead, btw. Kangaroo meat, ham, turkey and various chutneys, dips, and sauces made out of ???? Enjoyed it all. Oct 11 Swan Valley Spring in the Valley. What can we say; a wine festival. How lucky for us Lots and lots of people, lots of wine tasting, lots of too much to drink. They have a lot of tour buses and lots of shuttle busses so you don’t drink & drive. We visited 4 wineries, 1 distillery and stopped at a craft market for lunch. Out of the wineries, Entopia was our favourite. One place we saw 14 police, 2 horse mounted police, 2 motorcycle police, 2 bicycle police. Mostly young people on the prowl. Have to wonder how long this might last. Some of the wineries don’t take part in the festival. Oct 12 Packed up and headed to Fremantle. Good to be back in civilization again. While we really enjoyed the outback, we ... read more

After surviving the night with the Blair witch we started to head towards Denmark. The first stop of the day was at the Tree Top Walk to look at the giant red tingle trees. Now, in Australia there is quite a nasty spider called a red back. I had never seen one (and hoped not to either) but I assume at least some of the spider is red. As we were driving along I happened to look down and there on my leg was a little red and black spider. I can't remember my exact words but I'm sure you can all imagine. Rhod dispensed of the beast and we set to work trying to establish what it was. Our road map has a very limited guide to Australian flora and fauna and I decided that ... read more

So we're officially on the road now, away from the love and care of relatives. And so far so good. We were interested in Margaret river region, as I said, but decided to head further south when we read about the "tree top walk" - a fourty foot structure that you climb to gain a new perspective on Auz's famous tingle trees. The closest bus went to a town called Albany. When we arrived in the late afternoon, we discovered that the only way to get out to cette walk was by car - a problem for us minors. So, we spent the evening and early night fishing with three dollar handlines we'd bought at a store down the road from our hostel. This was our dinner - three tasty fish, fresh as can be.. chopping ... read more

ok so it's been a few days since we've had the chance to update the blog due to lack of decent towns with internet cafe's. most of the towns we come through look like something off bonanza! anyway, we headed down to Augusta, which was really windy,i was fighting with the van to keep it upright, not the most aerodynamic those vans you know? so we travelled to practically the end of the earth and landed at a circular carpark with a huge lighthouse right at the end. we paid our $24 and had a wander around before the tour started. it was just the 2 of us on the tour so it was pretty cool. this woman showed us around and took us up the 176 stairs to the top. fortunatly there were stop-off platforms every now ... read more
