Greetings to you all from a warm & steamy Tropical Queensland. As you'll probably gathered from the fact that we're now in Queensland we've done a bit of travelling since our last blog. Our 8 days in Broome were wonderful; clear skies, 33 degrees every day and nothing better to do than lie on Cable Beach soaking up the sun and contemplating when the waves would be at their best for a bit of boarding. When our 8 days were up we decided that we could do with more of the same but as accommodation in Broome was scarce we decided to head further down the W.A. Coast to the Pilbara region. 80 Mile Beach is 360km south of Broome and 240km north of the other nearest town, Port Hedland. Absolutely in the middle of nowhere ... read more

As we pulled into 80 Mile Beach Caravan Park I felt quite sceptical. It looked very red and dusty. It turned out to be a great place with friendly staff and a peaceful atmosphere with no driving between 7pm and 7am permitted. Some residents live there permanently and they even have Sunday morning markets. It was amazing to have power and water in the middle of nowhere. We were keen to check out this sandy stretch of coast. As we walked over the sand dunes to the beach we were met with the site of fishermen lining the shore as far as the eye can see. The fishing must be good!! The girls and I enjoyed swimming in the turquoise water (avoiding fishing lines) and collecting shells from the thousands that line the shore. Our hunter ... read more

Couldn't believe how many people were joining us - 21 in total felt like a lot after our little group of 13. Paddy was our next tour guide taking over from Ian - seemed like the most laidback guy after Ian the taskmaster! The bus felt like a downgrade compared to Ian as it was smaller, but I was lucky as I got to stretch out on the back seat for the morning. Spent quite a bit of the day travelling south - 500km in total - but st... read more

Barn Hill and Eighty Mile Beach for those that need a translation, this is Grey Nomad country! Barn Hill is a station stay accommodation on the beach, about 150ks south of Broome. You travel 10km off the main road and hit the station, then keep driving for a few hundred metres to the camp ground. We thought it would be a nice quiet place to spend a few days and try out the new beaut fishing gear….but….not in this retirement lifetime baby!! There are about 150 caravans here for around 3 months that someone forgot to tell us about - you know who you are! We got a camp site in the un-powered section so it was away from everyone, which was nice enough, although some of the walks to the loos, past the oldies ... read more

Off the main road gave us a new expression when we started to drive towards the camp site. Dust roads have a new meaning in this place. I think they are really best described as dry dust about 4 meters wide, with vegetation either side and they call this a road?! We found the camp site and walked to the beach, a whole 30 seconds! We weren't expecting much, it was just the most convenient campsite for where we needed to take a break. BUT Cor, what can I say, look at the pictures. When we arrived we saw signs about looking for nesting turtles which, we figured would be pretty cool to see but we didn't actually think we would see any turtles crawling up the beach. But hay we were sat there just watching ... read more
