We are on our way to Port Headland. We drove for hours and then stayed at a place called Cape Kerauden. It was a no power site with drop toilets – definitely not my favourite camp spot but this place was right on the beach and very beautiful. The only problem was we couldn’t swim because of stonefish. We caught up with Sue and Boyce again. Boyce loved my geode experiment so much that I wrote it out for him so that he could do it. The next day we went for a big walk along the beach and I collected more shells to do experiments with. The next day we drove to Port Headland. This is a mining town and there were mines and roadtrains everywhere! We stocked up with food and snacks and diesel ... read more

We rolled out of Indee Station after breakfast and headed north to Port Headland. The temperature has been on the rise for the past week and it was definitely sizzling today. The surrounding mines appear to be the main reason for people to come and live in this town as every second vehicle was a company owned 4WD. Other than fishing there did not appear to be much to keep you around if holidaying is what you had in mind. Our primary destination right now is Broome and we have been travelling in that direction with a purpose since we returned to Perth; we have to be there by Wednesday (long story). The further we head north the further our destination appears to be from us. You have no conception of how big this country is until ... read more

Thursday 16th – we were a bit sluggish getting going this morning but still managed to leave the South Hedland Caravan Park just after 9am. We weren’t sorry to be going and we won’t be recommending it to anyone else. Unfortunately, if you need to stay in town there isn’t a great deal of choice, hence the ludicrous price tag. We found out that the Big 4 site in Port Hedland was also full and the cost per night was a whopping $50! There were a few road trains around going in our direction (but still no railway trains in sight – not even on the crossing!!). After about 50 kms we saw signs to Pardoo Mine and that’s where the big trucks seemed to be turning off so we didn’t see many after that. The ... read more

After a 300km drive from Karijini we stopped in Port Headland, stocked up and decided to keep on trucking (it’s very much an industrial town so not somewhere we wanted to linger) and started the 611km journey along the North of Western Oz to Broome. To break up the journey we stopped at three absolutely amazing campsites on our way. First up was a site on Cape Keraudren Reserve, no facilities other than a few bush bogs (or long drops as they’re also known, though often the drop is not nearly long enough for us ladies! My thigh muscles are solid from all the squatting) and just an area of land on a cliff top overlooking the sea and beach below where you choose your spot. The drive there was a bone shaking 30 minutes along ... read more

We had to backtrack a little to visit Point Samson. We had decided that we wanted to see Dampier and Karratha. We were lucky enough to get the last site and didn’t mind that it was on a sandy site. The park is only five years in the making and amenities were modern and clean. Happy hour is part of being on the road and there is always someone to share with. At Point Samson it was with people from south of Perth. Six of them! We forgave their love of the eagles and just chatted on. MILLSTREAM - CHICHESTER NATIONAL PARK We decided to take a day to visit this area. The usual story ‘you can’t miss it’. 425 klms later we decided it was well worth the trip even though there were a lot ... read more

80 Mile Beach, 25 -26th August We both up early and by 8.30 we were on our way over the 22 kilometres of corrugated dirt road out of Port Smith. Rags noticed that the brakes weren’t working correctly and after pushing in a connecting cable plug we discovered that the brakes were partially on. We stopped several times trying to rectify this and Rags rebuilt the connection at an early lunch at Stanley but we hope to buy a new connector in Port Hedland. By the time we rolled into 80 Mile Beach, only an unpowered site was available, but as we have the solar panel this shouldn’t bother us for the couple of nights we’ll be here. Our charming camping spot is shaded for most of the day by the tamarisk trees surrounding us and ... read more

Mon 24th of August 2009 Port Hedland to Cape Keraudren to Port Hedland 350km Today was a day of stark contrast - from industrial mayhem to natural beauty beyond words. Last evening after consultation with my friend Steve in Perth I made a fundamental travel decision. I would give Broome and points farther east a miss. Part was timing, and part was a change of intent, that is, not to just cover as many miles as possible, but to travel less and enjoy what I was seeing. Steve felt that the beaches at the beginning of Eighty Mile Beach (only Australia could have a place of such a name) were as good as anything Broome had to offer and I could cut 900 km off the trip this way if I did not care for the ... read more

We did stay a bit longer at Ningaloo…two weeks in total. Snorkeling continued to be a highlight, including my first experience swimming with a reef shark. Well once I spotted the shark everyone swam towards it for a closer look. I, on the other hand, headed straight back to shore. Jojo loved the sharks and during Happy Hour reported on his close encounter with “such a friendly shark, he won’t hurt you as he has tiny tiny teeth. I love him.” In honour of Mother’s Day, I spent a day with “The Ladies” at The Novotel, Exmouth. We had a beautiful lunch, were photographed for promotional material, had a swim (after "borrowing" towels from the gym) and made the most of the outdoor shower. Then it was back to the Lakeside campground, drop toilet and ... read more

DAY 196 Andy was up nice and early this morning, he offered me a cup of tea at about 6.30 but I said it was too early, he was off fishing with Ken and Josh this morning. I heard Ken arrive at the door to the tent, he was whispering thinking that I was still asleep, it was 7.15 and they were just leaving to get onto Eighty Mile Beach and join the masses that would probably already be fishing. Andy gave me the rest of his cup of tea and disappeared. It was a beautiful hot morning, it started with a sea mist so everything was very damp. It felt lovely being in this environment, we are actually on a station, it is just that the station takes up most (if not all) of Eighty ... read more

We made the dash from Middle Lagoon to Port Smith after a brief fuel and food stop in Broome. Port Smith is at the northeastern end of Eighty Mile Beach and because we were only planning to stay there one night, we had pre-booked an on-site cabin. The next day we drove onto the beach near Eighty Mile Beach caravan park, where lots of shells were collected.... read more
