So Leahanne got us tickets to an AFL game. Her mom is a huge Carlton supporter and they were playing Collingwood on Saturday. So the three of us headed down to the MCG stadium. It was pure craziness down there. Thing Stanley cup finals crowd wise....soooo many people. These Aussies love their Aussie football. Melbourne is a city really into sports. There is something like 20 or 30 stadiums here i'm guessing haha. Anyways, we headed in and found our seats. The crowd was announced later on at 76, 980. Thats insane!!!! It's a very confusing game but everyone was really into it. I started really getting into it in the end. We were cheering for Carlton. But our team didn't really show up and we were getting our butts kicked! It's a really interesting sport, ... read more

Maybe we been a little harsh on melbourne it does have a very european feel to it with the trams and the buildings and its cold and grim here but anywhere that has The MCG cant be all bad, a place Philip has been desperate to see since he arrived in Australia and true cricketing colusiem that blows you away the sports musuem inside is fantastic as well and the interactive games at the end are great fun although getting involved in the interactive Aussie rules game with our friend gino wasnt the best idea especially with another half marathon to run somewhere in the world a week sunday. Philip hasnt run since the marathon in the gold coast but has been swimming most days so maybe a bit of trainning wouldn't go a miss. We ... read more

It's seldom that a Michael Bolton gig is responsible for anything other than misery, but, for what's got to be the first time in history, good came from one of them as his show at the St Kilda Palais led to us getting invited down to Melbourne by our mate Rowena. Quite why a mostly sane 26 year old girl loves him is beyond me, but she does and God bless her for it, because it resulted in one hell of a holiday at exactly the time we needed one. Had a few dramas after her place was torn apart by a plumber looking for a leak (only 4 swimming pools worth), a few days before we left, but we managed to get a late hotel, so all was pretty peachy in the end. We tried ... read more

Hi Everyone, Hope everyone is well and not suffering from cold symptons where ever you are! Also before you read details in here, we're fine, no injuries, if that's got you wondering, read on. Perth Ok, so last we wrote we were just about to leave Singapore to head to Oz. We arrived just after midnight in Perth and in our wisdom decided rather than head into town to pay for a room that we'd only sleep in for a few hours, that we'd sleep in the airport. Genius... apart from the fact we couldn't sleep and nothing was open. So after arriving in town and getting digs we went to the massive Kings Park and had a kip whilst the locals ran, cycles, jogged, power walked or just took their dogs for a walk around ... read more

Day 177: Tuesday 23rd December - Staying with an old friend in Melbourne The thing that has been driving me on from place to place for the last six months is my arrangement to stay with my friend Danielle in Melbourne for Christmas. Every time I thought about staying longer somewhere or following a fellow traveller’s recommendation about a place I didn’t know about I always knew I’d have to sacrifice something later on in my trip before getting to Australia. I simply couldn’t miss the chance to spend Christmas with friends. I can’t remember her address on the plane when filling out the immigration forms so I end up having to make something up! Australian customs prove to be much easier to negotiate than their Kiwi equivalents so I have a relatively smooth exit from ... read more

Day 489 to 495 (28.07.08 - 03.08.08) We had a normal week and were glad to get back to dancing after our break now that we were both fully recovered from our colds. Mark was still enjoying his basketball matches despite a bit of a beating this week. On Thursday evening we joined Tiana at her monthly meeting for her group Earthwatch in St Kilda. Mark had offered to give a talk on media relations to help them to get their messages into the media and to give them adivce for if the media contacted them for opinions on current events. He really enjoyed using his brain and his working knowledge again after so long and the group semed to find the talk useful. Mark was awarded a fleece at the end of the evening as ... read more

Hello Everyone (and Happy Memorial Day to the folks back home)! Hope you have been enjoying the nice weather we've been getting, both the fall temps here in Melbourne and the Springtime weather in the US! Yesterday, I went with Anthony, Naomi, and Nicholas to my first Footy match of the season. Here in Melbourne, Footy definitely takes precedent over Rugby (which is more popular in Sydney). If you've never seen a Footy match, it's a mixture between soccer and rugby. The field is oval in shape, but the ball which is played looks more like a rugby ball. There are all kinds of rules that make this game soooo confusing at first, but the more you watch, the more you can get into the plays and the strategies! It's also a huge part of Melbourne ... read more

Days 4-7 are in the bag. Day 4. Took it easy today, had a big night last night. Jody and Keith have invited me out for dinner with them. They decide it would be better to pick me up at the hostel, and I completely agree. Take me to the North side of Melbourne to an Italian district with many restaurants. Had a great pasta dinner with a local beer. Keith is off with some friends to see the upcoming Warren Miller flick. Jody and myself head to a couple local pubs in her area (Richmond). Both somewhat unsuccessful. They have again offered to pick me up tomorrow and to their house for dinner. Again, gladly accept. Day 5 - Went up the Eureka tower today, the largest free standing building in the Oceana. 88 floors ... read more
