So last day in Melbourne an d a few thing to add since my last entry. Firstly being my first experience of Aussie rules at the MCG! I was really excited beforehand as I'd never seen it before in any way and plus I was going to the MCG! It was definately worth it though, it reminded me of going to matches at home. There were loads of families (not suprising as kids tickets were $4) and it think a pretty good crowd of around 56,000 though the ground holds 100,000. It took a few minutes to get into but we quickly guessed at the rules and got into the game despite all the efforts of the coldness trying to get at us. The pitch was huge though, you could still see the lines from ... read more

So the Aussies love their footy. And their brekky and their barbie. Basically you can tell how much they like something by the existence of a Y on the end of the word. Well I got another Y-word for it - silly. Footy is a silly game, played by silly people, officiated by VERY silly referees, for silly fans, in a silly country. In my opinion, it's closest cousin is actually ultimate frisbee (slight difference - footy players actually wear shoes and have bathed within a month), mixed with rugby. A final score of 132 - 100 does add excitement though. While it's certainly not a game for a wimps, it's not exactly the carnage we all have heard about. However, last night's on-field fight before the game even started was a nice touch.... read more

So this blog continues in Oz but this time on the west coast! We started our journey by flying back to Darwin. Having already visited there we decided to leave the very next morning and booked online a Greyhound ticket to take us on a 6000km epic journey down to Perth. As we packed our things and readied ourselves, we discovered to our horror that the bus had not been able to leave for the previous 3 days as the whole of northwest Australia (particularly the Kimberleys) was under water - yes summer is also the wet season in Oz! We crossed our fingers and hoped we would make it to our first destination Katherine and luckily we did! We only stopped overnight in Katherine but this was long enough to visit the beautiful gorge and ... read more

So we're settling into life in Melbourne very easily and absolutely loving it. It took us a while to find somewhere to stay but we've now got ourselves a little apartment in St Kilda East, close to beach and easy access right in the centre of the city. It's also a few mins walk to Chapel Street which houses plenty of boutique, trendy clothes shops to keep Caroline busy. The apartment is great, and has it's own tennis court, swimming pool and BBQ so we're pretty sorted really. We also have a rather friendly possum waiting by the window each night as it gets dark. As you hopefully all know, the one day series came to an end yesterday and for a nice change we WON. We managed to get to the first final at the ... read more

We didn’t get up the next day until 10am - our longest lay in yet! We made our way into Melbourne about midday in time for the cricket which started at 2.15pm. We thought we had to get a couple of things to wear just to prove who we were supporting so Stu bought an England cap and a flag and Kerry bought a Barmy Army t-shirt. The MCG is huge and there was a crowd of over 38,000. Although this was apparently quite empty compared to previous matches as there is a capacity of nearly 80,000! (see pics). It was so easy to just walk in and find a seat, we made sure we were fairly close to a few English fans and the majority of the Barmy Army! The weather was perfect, full sun ... read more

Well we wish Warne was out. We don't need to tell you how bad England are at Cricket so we'll salvage some upsides from our three days at the Melbourne Cricket Ground: 1. We sit behind someone dressed as a parrot. 2. We eat lots of pies in the awesome MCG stadium. 3. Our cricket package includes a five-star hotel - a far cry from the hostels of China. 4. Pies 5. Celebrity claim to fame Beeb commentator Jonathon Agnew is in the hotel room opposite ours 6. Meat Pies 7. (Emma Only) The cricket mercifully lasts three days - disposing us to much more rewarding pursuits - pigeon baiting, pie eating etc 8. Monty Panesar Our December 25 picnic is a washout as Melbourne suffers its coldest Christmas in 70 years. Instead we scoff our ... read more

... read more

Well , we braved one whole day at the MCG watching the England cricket team do the charitable thing and let the Aussies head for an Ashes whitewash. In fact England were so bad the only good thing about the day was watching the crowd, in particular the barmy army, not ones to be silenced by the fact that they have travelled half way around the world to watch a dismal cricket match. It took us most of the day to score about 80 runs then I went to buy beer and a cuppa and when I got back half the England team were out ( I had to que for 25 minutes). Never mind, it was still a good day out, the MCG is a really smart ground with a good atmosphere. Although I expected ... read more

Went into the city and walked to the MCG where I found that there was a day night match being played from 2pm. As it was 10:30 and they were not doing the tours I went back into the city and met a guy from the hostel who was looking for a ticket agency to see if there were any test match tickets left. I had seen the ticket office so showed him where it was and he got tickets for the day 2 & 3 for $40 aus dollars about £20 each day. I tried to get tickets for Sydney but no chance advised all sold out. We then got a bite of lunch then headed for the MCG to watch the cricket which was NSW V Victoria Blues, Victoria blues won.At the end we ... read more

Irene's Mom and Dad arrived today so to integrate them into Melbourne society (and so they could participate in the most talked about subject) we brought them to an AFL game at the 'G! We had the requisite beer and bun (thanks Sonnie), and tried to encourage the screaming at the referees that is Steve and Sonnie’s favourite occupation. As the Demon’s weren’t faring too well against the Kangeroos Irene realised that it must be because we were sitting a row up from our “lucky seats”, as we moved down to Row S, we got two goals in quick succession…Go Davy. We ended the day on a high note winning 132 to 82.... read more
