Consider the concept: Eight total strangers are given a 4x4 Land Cruiser, camping equipment and the means to get to the worls largest sand island for several days. No tour guides, no people who know each other, just a bunch of people set loose on a virtually uninhabited island to live and manage by themselves for three days. To me this sounds more like the formula for a reality TV show, but it became far more than that this past week when i found myself in just such a situation. This was the Fraser island self-drive, something that was a great experience and which i am really sad is now over. I got the bus up here from Byron Bay on Thursday, i knew that i would be looking to get out to Fraser Island when ... read more

Hello again people, hows things? thought i'd just give a little update on our adventures recently... we left brisbane after lapping up everything arnies relatives could throw at us i.e. free beer, food and a hot tub, and headed to rainbow beach for a couple of days. left there for fraser island which was quality. Just a big group of us hammering these 4x4's around all sand tracks hunting for lakes and just nailing them down the beach- great fun! A couple of the lakes were awesome as hopefully the pictures show- lake wabby was surrounded by a massive sand dune so you could just leg it down there and crash into the lake at the bottom! At night we just set up camp and drank litres of goon (for those who don't know the goon ... read more

Having said our goodbyes to everyone from our Fraser group, we caught the Greyhound down to Brisbane. This was almost up with Melbourne as my number one Oz city. Very lively with a river running through it past cliff walks and 'Street Beach' a pleasant lagoon. We caught a Citycat ferry from the centre to the western edge of the city near the Uni, and then returned after darkness had fallen to find the cityskyline lit up spectacularly. On our only full day here, we hired bikes for a tour of the city, taking in Kangaroo point with its stark cliff face, the Street beach lagoon, the botannical gardens and a fair stretch of the river. We then had a night on the town with a Helen and Carolyn from our Fraser Island trip. Obviously a ... read more

We were staying with Bruce & Rebecca in Mackay, however, Bruce was off fishing in the Gulf (Australias gulf, not Iraq). Rebecca had started work ridiculously early at 5am but that meant she was home for the afternoon. We drove out to Eungella National Park picking up Rebecca's sister, Bridgett on route. It was a sunny day & we passed field upon field of sugar cane gently swaying in the breeze. We stopped off at Finch Hatton Gorge & walked down to the Araluen Falls. A big pool at the bottom had a few people splashing around in it so in we jumped. The rocks were slippery & the water was cold but refreshing in the tropical Queensland heat. On the walk back to the car a rustling in the bush revealed a spotted goanna, a ... read more

At an hour unacceptable to most, the Wondering Wanderers arose and underwent final preparations before the taxi arrived to whisk them away to the airport. Ahh... Vanuatu... we couldn't wait! We arrived at the airport uber early, as we had a few tax refunds we wished to lodge and we didn't know how long the queues would be. When we rocked up to the TRS/Customs Office on level 1 at Brisbane Int'l, the office was empty - so much for the crowds we were expecting! Getting our receipts stamped for items we wished to check-in was a breeze so we ended up having a lot of time to kill whilst a) waiting for check-in and then b) waiting for the call to board. We managed to score a luggage trolley with a few magazines on it ... read more

Hello there! Kristen and I got back from our 2 nights, 3 days sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands yesterday. We had a fabulous time. What made it even more wonderful, was that our friends from Fraser Island were with us too! There were 83 of us in total who participated in this tour. We were split into 2 groups, half sailed on a cadamaran (??? I swear my spelling has become atrocious since I've been out of school) named Cora and the other half sailed on a cadamaran named the Pride of Airlie. Kristen and I, along with Tom (our 18 yr old Flying Dingo brother from the camping trip) and the Swedes we met at Fraser--Emelie 19, Ebba 19, Sanna 21, Jenny 21, Jennifer 21, and Philip 20-- were all on the Pride of ... read more

Hey Everyone Alright I have bad news, these damn public computers are to slow to upload pictures which is why Becca's page does not have any pictures either right now. But it's just one more week until I am in Perth and there will be pictures galore. In the meantime you'll just have to settle for my excellent verbal descriptive skills. Really that consists of the words hot, amazing, awesome and impossible to describe. But I'll do my best. So we just got back from our sailing trip around the Whitsunday islands. The weather was gorgeous, the water was gorgeous, the snorkelling was gorgeous, in a nutshell it was gorgeous. We travelled on a cadamaran (or something spelt like that) with around 50 other people and stayed on an island resort at night. I almost didn't ... read more

Travelling down from Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay - the nearest access point to Fraser Island - we stopped en route in Rockhampton ('Rockie') for a night to break up the long journey. Apparently Australias cattle capital, the route to Rockie was dotted with sightings of cattle trucks bursting at the seams with horns and tail poking out every where. The following day, we were back on the Greyhound bus until arriving at Hervey Bay Beaches backpackers in time for our briefing from the Beaches staff. There were 18 people booked up for the following days 3 day 2 night departure to Fraser Island with Bay 4wd Adventures, and we divided into two groups of nine, and then set about sorting the Alcohol and food shopping to see us through the next three days. Our group ... read more
