Today I woke up pretty early to a sunny morning, but soon the clouds came in and the wind picked it up. Amanda seems to be in a coma, I don’t blame here, jet lag is exhausting. Expecially when you are coming from the other side of the world. Alvaro and I are going to work on going through the data he collected the other day on the water, and I might head to the beach for a walk. About the time Amanda got up, I decided to head out for my walk and she came with me. By this time the weather was real nice, so we headed down to the beach and got some gorgeous weather. There is a series of rocky outcroppings a bit farther on down the beach so we headed ... read more

In the morning I went through all of the data sheets with Amanda and ran her through the ropes of getting the boat ready for days out on the water. After a bit we headed down to the beach with the cameras to practice getting shots of moving objects. Amanda has had only a little bit of work with Photo ID, so a little practice never hurts. We took some shots of moving birds, a few buoys and any other moving objects we could find before going exploring in the rocks again. We didn’t really see much, but picked up tons of trash that was floating in the surf or caught in the rocks. It was kind of disgusting the amount of trash we brought back. Most of the debris were plastic backs, but there were ... read more

The world cup final game was on at 4:30 this morning. Amanda was very excited as Holland battled Spain for the title. By the time I woke up though, the house was somber and I could tell by the lack of screaming and happy faces that Spain won. Daniele had to run some errands in Gladstone today, a town about 2 hours away. Amanda and I tagged along as I am getting pretty sick of the house. The ride was long as hell, but pretty in most aspects. I guess when people think of Australia, this wouldn’t be the scenery they would first describe. Long, flat fields of yellow grass filled with grazing cattle and horses with mountains on the horizon. Rockhampton and the surrounding towns are considered the beef capital of Australia, so that accounts ... read more

Today we were up at 5 and at the river boat ramp by 6:15. The upper part of the river looked a bit foggy, but it cleared out quickly. I was captain again, but today didn’t go as smoothly. The tide was out realy low, the lowest of the year possibly. That being said I accidently scraped a few layers of paint off the boat getting it into the water. Then, navigating down the river nearly gave me an ulcer as I haven’t been able to memorize the locations of the sand banks perfectly yet. By the time we got to the river mouth I was ready for some chocolate. After a few hours of searching and finding nothing we decided to head in as the weather was starting to look real bad. The dolphin gods ... read more

I woke up real early this morning and hopped in the shower. We had to drive to the airport, pick up Daniele then head back to Yeppoon and give a presetation. On the drive there Amanda and I chatted a bit, and she saw a bunch of kangaroos by the side of the road; my first time seeing them in the wild. We got Daniele, who by now is looking way too tired. This was his last time having to fly back to Uni, and all he has to do is mail out a few copies of his PhD on Monday and he is all set! After a few months, reviewers will send him comments and he can publish his PhD. We headed back to Yeppoon and went to the community development center for the presentation. ... read more

Today was Alvaro’s first day out on the water. He was like a little kid! Jumping screaming, yelling and pointing. I guess where he did his PhD the dolphins were very few and far between, so for him this was a real treat. We saw plenty of dolphins throughout the day and the highlight was that Daniele got two samples! We are trying to get at least 12 samples I think it is. He already has a few before the season started, and with the two we got today it knocks it down to us needing 6 or 7 more. The first sample was only a tiny piece of skin, but the second was a nice big chunk - just what we needed! Alvaro was supposed to start his acoustic work and check out his ... read more

Today is July 4th and I am in Australia. Kinda of a weird thing. It will be strange thinking of everyone back home having cookouts and fireworks and spending a ton of time together while I am here in a country that probably few people have even heard of the reason behind the celebration in the US. Anyways, we were supposed to go out on the water today but I woke up at 9:30 to a gorgeous day and Daniele at work at his computer. Then I looked outside; windy as hell. It’s very rare that we see wind at our place, and we know that when we do it’s a bad day to go out on the water. At one point I went into the front yard to sit in the sun and saw ... read more

We were supposed to head out on the water, but in waking up early Daniele and I realized the weather was real crap. We tried to wait it out a bit, but a quick trip to the beach showed us just how crazy the wind was. Alvaro was pretty excited that we didn’t have to go out as he was still tired from travelling. I ran a bunch of errands, went grocery shopping and as it is the fourth in the states, Daniele decided to celebrate a bit and he took me to a local animal preserve. Cooberrie park is a park where injured and sick animals can be taken and kept. We saw all sorts of awesome Aussie animals, and I got to feed and pet kangaroos! It let me pat it and all ... read more

Daniele flew out to Uni on Wednesday and I spent Thursday and Friday working on the photo ID catalogue and the excel spread sheets. I got plenty of work done, but soon enough ran out of stuff to do. Laundry, reading etc. soon took over. Wednesday night and Thursday night I muttered threats to myself in bed as the next door neighbor dog barked until the wee hours of the night then woke me up around 5 the next mornings. It seems to be some sort of pit mix that think’s it needs to bark everytime a bug flies by. Needless to say, I am not impressed. Now we all know that I love dogs and animals in general more than I could put into words, but come on now. A little training won’t kill ... read more

We were up at 5 today and lucky us the weather looked gorgeous outside. Today was also the day we had to move out of the rental home, so we had to make sure everything was packed into the car before we left for good. The boat was over the other house, so we stopped there and dropped everything off. We headed to the marina, about a half hour drive, got the boat in the water and headed out. The first thing that I noticed was that the swells were really high and secondly the area is much different than Airlie Beach. Here, we don’t have the reef and as many islands protecting the channel so the water is very murky and the sea is really rough. About an hour of slow motoring later Daniele ... read more
