I can't believe it has been almost 3 weeks since I have updated the blog. We have been working like mad fools! For the past week and a half we have been out on the water almost every day, and before that I was working hard on computer work. By the end of the day I was so tired with everything that I usually went to bed early. Here are my journal entries for the past few weeks. It's going to be long, but hope you enjoy being caught up to date! Tuesday August 3, 2010 Back to the computers today. Amanda and I worked on the photo ID catalogue for a few hours, then I took over as we had changed some orginazation and it needed a major re-haul. In the early afternoon I went ... read more

CLONCURRY TO YEPPOON Thurs 5th Aug, We had a look around town, (not much to see ) and had a relaxing day at the caravan park. They had a bush poet last night and a country singer tonight. Very pleasant stay. Fri 6th Aug, A long 342 kms to Winton today and on the way we saw quite a few of the 400 Harley riders that had been at a group gathering at Mt Isa this week. Not a blade of grass at the caravan park but neat and clean. We were again entertained by bush poets and a travelling family band. They were all great. Sat 7th Aug, Up early and off in a small bus out to the Dinosaur Stampede display 120kms out in the bush. They have spent a bucketload setting it all ... read more

Although we had high hopes for the day, it is well known in field work that if you have one kick ass day, the next will be so-so or miserable. I was trying not to get my hopes up, but the spirit from yesterday was still in the air. When we left the marina, the sunrise was gorgeous. We were on our way to the river by 6 and you could just see a bit of color on the horizon. In the truck this morning Alvaro said he had no idea why anyone would wake up early if they didn’t have to. This would be my reason. The sunsets here are gorgeous. I guess they are really nice in other places as well, but I’m no expert. I guess I am also a bit biased. I ... read more

I did not want to get out of bed this morning. I was all warm and toasty and was still frusterated about the day on the water yesterday. By the time we got to the marina I was feeling a bit better. We pulled into the harbor and did our morning routine of getting the boat ready for the day. Normally I have the radio playing in the background and this morning Guns and Roses, Sweet Child of Mine came on. Oh yeah, good stuff. Needless to say the volume went up just a tad more, and I couldn’t help feeling much better. Once we got outside of the marina the sky cleared up and I had a feeling it would be a good day. I even voiced that opinion saying that something good better happen ... read more

It's been a while since I have written because I have been so bogged down with work that I haven't had time to think! I got tons of work done this week, so it has been a really big step. Also, tomorrow is the first day of August. It is such a strange feeling knowing that I have already been here two months. It seems like the time is flying by, and I really don't want to leave in a few months. I am going to try and see if i can stay down here on some other project or get on as a master's or PhD student. That is just me wishing right now, so we will see if it actually happens. Finger's crossed though! Till next time, G'Day Mate! (yes, they actually say that ... read more

Wednesday July 21, 2010 Daniele woke us up this morning at 6 and said that he will be staying behind while the rest of us go out on the water. The crew and I got everything ready then headed down to the marina. At the marina, the man that owns the fuel station told us that it was at least 20knots outside the bay and that it would be rough sailing for such a small vessel. Though I believed what he was saying, I still wanted to hear Daniele’s opinion. We got down to the boat ramp and called him up, and he said to trust the locals and turn home! For a few hours we loafed around the house, then Daniele said he had to go to Rockhampton for a few hours. Amanda and I ... read more

I tried to sleep in today, but after so many days of waking up at 5 my body could just not stay asleep. After breakfast I started working on some of the photo ID and data entry. A few hours later Daniele and I ran out to do some errands. It was gorgeous outside, but when we went past the water you could see that it was choppy out at sea. Back at the house we did some more work, then Amanda and I went for a walk into town. Unbeknownst to me there is a small little shopping center, so we wandered through that for a bit then stopped in many of the shops that line the main street. Back at the house Daniele and I set out for our run, after which it ... read more

We woke up at the crack of dawn and headed to the marina. I am starting to get way to used to gorgeous sunrises. This morning we had a clear sky with brightly colored clouds hanging low over the mountains and islands. It really is a gorgeous way to start the day. I was driving and we headed quickly down to the river. At the river we got into spotting position and after about an hour or so we still hadn’t seen anything. Daniele was starting to get a bit worried until we saw two separate groups of humpback dolphins. That was nice, but a bit worrisome because normally when the humpbacks are around, the snubfins aren’t. The good thing about seeing the humpbacks is that they were really close to the boat. This will ... read more

We slept in just a bit today and headed out from the river again. Daniele once again had me drive, and even though I almost had a mini heart attack I got down the river just fine. The tide was extremely low again, so we headed out towards snubfin point, a popular feeding ground at low tide. Unfortunately it soon started to rain, so we drove around for the rest of the morning, trying to avoid rain and find dolphins. Didn’t work too well. The dolphins we did find only stuck around for a few minutes and the weather just got worse. Around 2 we headed in and Daniele had Amanda drive in. I thought the poor girl was going to have a heart attack when he all of a sudden turned the gps off ... read more

Today was an extremely stressful day on my part. We were up real early and at the river before the sun was even up. I was driving for the day, which made me nervous as the tide was extremely low. The river is not an easy place to navigate and with the combination of low tide and moving sandbars I was stressing already. Daniele want’s me to learn the river real well, so he sat back as I navigated down. Of course it would happen on my day of driving but all of a sudden the engine started to smoke, and this high pitched wining noise started to go off. I slowed down real quick, cut the engine and lifted it out of the water. Were still not sure what happened to it, but somehow the ... read more
