Today we went out from the marina, the weather didn’t look to bad when we headed out. It was a real strange day though, very cloudy and cold in the morning and sunny but cold in the afternoon with glass smooth seas. We got to the river, but were puzzled to find absolutely nothing. Not even the birds were out fishing today. We barely saw any dolphins, and if we did only from a distance. After a few hours we headed home and got to the marina in late afternoon, maybe we will have better luck tomorrow. ... read more

Sleeping in until 7:30 feels like such a luxury! Except for the part that we live across the street from a few car shops and I woke up to a grinder bright and early in the morning. Go figure. I guess I can’t escape the damn grinder anywhere! In case any one is confused, the grinder is Alex’s favorite tool and he would use it to cut his fingernails if he could. I wouldn’t be surprised if he snuggles with it at night. On the other hand though the kid works magic with that thing, so I guess I can’t complain too much. Daniele brought the boat to the mechanic and when he returned he gave me a list of things he wants done while he is gone. Now that the season is starting to ... read more

Today we went out from the Fitzroy river again, but this time with Shane. Shane works for the Fitzroy River Basin Association and is in charge of allocating funds to different community projects, such as the one we are doing. Consequently most of our grant funds come from the FBA and Shane, and he and his co-workers will be coming out on the boat with us every now and again. The drive to the river takes a while, but this morning the sky and sunrise were gorgeous. We were driving through the mountains and I kept popping my head out the window to try and get a shot of the bright purple and pink sky. We got to the river and could only see a tiny bit of fog in the surrounding area and had calm ... read more

I guess Daniele wasn’t kidding when he said that it would get cold. I was FREEZING this morning when I woke up. My 15˚ sleeping bag didn’t really do much, gonna have to bundle up more from now on. The new house we are in is pretty basic, walls and windows - nothing fancy. The other houses we have stayed in have all had head and real thing stone walls, not this time. Anyways the girls threw their stuff in the truck, we all bundled up and we started driving. We headed to the Fitzroy River today and it was about an hours drive to the boat ramp. On the way there we could barely see the road in front of us it was so foggy. Daniele was worried because he said the fog would ... read more

I woke up 6 hours later in Rockhampton, a larger city south of Airlie beach. It reminded me so much of home, with a greyhound station, McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Hut, Dominos and other American stores and restraints. We waited in McDonalds, as Daniele was flying into Rockhampton at 7:30. Soon enough he arrived and we all piled into the car for the 45-minute ride to Yeppoon. The area is very arid with fields of yellow grass, broken up by steep mountains with lush green vegetation on the sides of the bright orange rock. In Yeppoon we went to the house and picked up some of the luggage Daniele had brought down for us. We headed into the heart of Yeppoon and Daniele told us he decided to rent a house for a few days. He hadn’t ... read more

We woke up today to a pretty gross day. We thought we might be able to go out on the water, but it was raining and windy. Daniele went out real early and bought one bed for the house. He wanted us to come with him to pick out the rest of the stuff, so early afternoon he picked us up and we all went to the red cross. We left with two more twin beds and mattresses, a few bureaus and a sofa couch, and some sheets and blankets. Back at the house we got to cleaning and the furniture was delivered. Daniele went out to do some business while the girls and I finished cleaning and organizing. When he got back, we all piled into the truck and headed down to Emu Park, ... read more

Woke up this morning and Daniele headed off early to Gladstone to get some errands done. There is some bird in the area that has a call that sounds like someone is whistling, so I want to try and figure out what it is because it is such a cool sound. The girls and I lounged around for a bit, and as the weather was gorgeous we decided to walk to town. It is a bit of a distance, but we had nothing better to do, so we got ready then headed out. The walk wasn’t bad, and the scenery is much different than Airlie Beach. The area is more hilly and where there is not houses there are mangroves or parks. We walked around Yeppoon center for a bit, stopping into different shops here ... read more

Quote by Debby for Blog 5 went something like this (after possibly a little too much to drink) “When it’s dark it’s too light!” Anyway, let’s move on, to Blackwater to be precise, our third stop on the way to Yeppoon. Pity we didn’t keep on driving, Blackwater is a mining town, full of, guess what? Yes, dirty miners! We did a little shopping and Debby got her hair cut (more expensive than and no where near as good as Kathy’s, but it’ll have to do!) At first light we left for Kinky Beach - um, that’s Kinka Beach, just south of Yeppoon. We spent four nights here at a very peaceful site. We visited Yeppoon itself, let’s just say, it was ok, and Rosslyn bay was very pretty. We went out to Byfield National Park, ... read more
