Our onward journey toward Bowen makes use of the Bruce highway, notorious for accidents and it's easy to see why.Single lane for most of it's length and in poor condition the need for concentration is very evident.Nevertheless the journey is good with ever changing scenery. We reach Bowen and after inspecting 2 of the caravan parks we decided to keep moving and head for Airlie beach a town which is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands all 74 of them ,this is a place we have visited several times and we are surprised how much it has changed from a small sleepy town to a modern vibrant holiday destination. Boasting new shopping centres to a new marina and transit centre where boats leave for tours of the islands and the great barrier reef.We are told that the town ... read more

After a bit of a restless night on the boat due to the heat and a feeling a bit claustrophobic in my small low bunk I was up with the cook lol. Everyone else slowly woke up and soon we were a full compliment and tucking into a hearty breakfast. It was a calm day out on the water and the sky was cloudless and it was going to be a hot sunny day :-). After breakfast we went snorkelling, before we went out we had our safety briefing from Justin and then donned our stinger suits, they are a bit like wet suits only not as thick and heavy and easier to take on and off. As we were coming into jelly fish season we were advised to wear them, so we all looked like ... read more

This morning I was awake early for a change lol as I was heading off to the Whitsunday islands for assailing trip for a couple of days. I had per packed npmy little backpack the night before in readiness for my trip and I was leaving my big ruck sack at the hostel for a couple of days whilst I was away, but had to pay $6 for the pleasure! I got ready had breakfast and checked out and walked up to the meeting point and was 30 minutes early, but better to be early than late :-) there were other people there also meeting for boat trips so it was obviously the main meeting point for the boat trips going from the marina. Whilst I was waiting I bumped into Natalie and Rachel my two ... read more

Yesterday (24th May) I pulled up the anchor and set sail at about 7am while Naomi & Alex were still in bed. In winds only just strong enough to hold the sails up, mostly the current pushed us slowly along the coast. It was a peaceful flat sail but still Naomi was feeling off and grumpy with it. Hard to believe she was sea-sick, we have been in rougher marinas! We are going to assume optimistically that its just tiredness otherwise being this sensitive to seasickness could end this trip. When Gloucester Passage came into view the water became glassy and although we were still moving we started the motor so we could make the Montes Resort for lunch. Anchored in the shallow water in front of the resort having travelled only 17 miles in 6 ... read more

Waking up in a random house, in the middle of no where, hungover, was not what I wanted to be doing on the morning of a boat tour but hey ho, here I was. One of the lads put some music on again and then offered us a lift back into town, sorted! We had to drive for about 10 minutes down a dirt track before we even reached a road which showed we were pretty far out, although when I asked the lad he did admit that it meant they can have the best house parties with no interruptions from neighbours or Police. I got dropped off at the hostel and it was a mad rush for me to quickly pack my bag, check out and head down to the harbour. We were running a ... read more

A perfect Daydream Island Wedding doesn't plan itself over night. My sister, Jessica, the bride to be, planned relentlessly for almost 2 years for her big day. Luckily, most was put together for her in a wedding package by a personal wedding coordinator which they have on the island for you. Rachel, the wedding coordinator was amazing an undoubtedly the most important aspect of the wedding planning. The package can be basic, extravagant or anything in between with options to upgrade this and extend that. I feel Jessica's was somewhere in the middle. The 50-something guest, including myself, arrive into Hamilton Island airport the day before the wedding. It is a blissful, sunny, hot November day and the sky is perfectly clear. Our fingers are crossed for similar weather the next day. Half the group had ... read more

Wednesday was a warm day with light balmy breezes. A perfect day for exploring a place I have had in mind for some time - Cole Island. Some years ago, on a flight up or down the coast I happened to look down and see a special island. A small one off the northwest of Lindeman Island that looks so perfect its hard to believe it isn't man-made. It has an off-centre irregular lump of land covered in bush, and 3 beaches connecting its projections forming a triangle of beaches. With barely any wind the motor to Cole Island was just over an hour. As we came around the bottom of Seaforth Island I noticed the cardinal marker for Spitfire rock was missing. Cole is not known as anchorage so this was something else special. Except ... read more

19/2 Our bus arrived around midnight and we all waited to get checked on and store our luggage. There was a strange lady who was trying to talk to us but she seemed a little dodgy, asking us if we were going to sleep on the bus, so we tried to avoid her. Luckily we were given seat allocations and we were opposite ends of the bus! We left on time (00.25) and started our long journey. The bus driver was pretty crazy, driving very fast and kept going over the bumpy lines on the side of the road. It was very quiet, everyone seemed to be sleeping- except me of course! We stopped around 2.30 to pick up some other passengers, and I hadn't slept at all by this point. I managed to doze on ... read more

Sadly today I left Daydream Island for my return to Brisbane. The boat ride to Hamilton was a bit choppy because of the strong winds and blustery showers. Finally arrived back in Forestdale at 5pm so not much to write about today.... read more
