True to form, I'm in reception at 7am, wondering if there's been a cancellation. There hasn't. I've now got it in my head that I need to do something - whether it be scenic flight, helicopter trip or full on sailing tour, despite the fact that there's not enough time and really I should just get on the road. The weather however is due to be gorgeous for the next few days so I'm more than tempted to sail off into the sunset. The tour booker must have sensed this too as she suggested a two day, overnight trip, leaving at 8.30am, for the heavily discounted price of AUD300, some AUD 200 more than I wanted to spend. However, after 10 minutes' contemplation, I'm sold, and I sprint off to a) strip my bed, b) pack ... read more

Moving south to avoid the wet season we ventured into the outback on single track roads trying to avoid being mown down by the road trains, which at over 50 metres long travelling at 100kmph own the road and delight in terrifying the unwary tourist van. Kangaroos, Kookaburras, huge insects, baking heat, dust and humidity told us that this was the real Australia, so we headed straight back to the comfort of a beach resort at Airlie. Liz had talked up the Whitsunday islands as a once in a lifetime experience and to be honest it was. The weather was great, sailing on the racing yacht with a small group, snorkelling on the barrier reef, walking through the rainforest was worth the whole trip alone. There was the downside of sleeping on a 2 foot wide bed ... read more

Uttered with a lopsided grin, Grahame finished his ‘safety checklist’ with the comment that “I am not going to bother showing you how to use the life jackets mate, because if the boat sinks and you don’t know how to put one on, that’s just natural selection in action.” I grinned back, but also made a mental note to come back after everyone was asleep to make sure I wasn’t going to be the loser in that particular selection event. After dreaming of this moment for months, Frances and I were finally sailing away from the Airlie Beach harbor, in the catamaran Serendipity for an eight-day trip through the Whitsunday Island chain, located off the northeast coast of Australia. We were sailing with Danny and Ruth, two Aussie friends of 30 some-odd years. As unsettling as ... read more

28/10/11 Hello again! We arrived on the east coast into Townsville from inland central QLD and after recovering from the shock of traffic, traffic-lights, lots of people and humidity we headed north up the coast! We made our way 450km's to Daintree in Far North Queensland where the rainforest meets the coral reef. It felt bizarre to suddenly be surrounded by lush rain-forest, tall tropical trees, rugged mountains and cane fields after so long spent in the hot dry desert! We saw beautiful deep rivers and gorgeous beaches but were unable to swim due to the possibility of a marine stinger making close and potentially deadly contact with us in the sea or of becoming dinner for a ferocious Estuarine Crocodile! We loved the signs in English and German at each bridge reminding people of the ... read more

Day 40, 21/10/11 Woke up early again today and had breakfast before setting off sail again for a quick snorkel where I saw loads of fish right up close to my face which scared me a bit. I turned around and saw a massive fish which was amazing - until it disappeared! We then set sail to head back to Airlie Beach and the sun finally came out so I started to sunbath and got a nice tan. We got back to Airlie Beach where we freshened up and relaxed until the evening where our group from the boat all met up at the bar next to our hostel for a nice evening.... read more

Day 38, 19/10/11 Woke up and had to check out by 11am. It was raining so we went to check to see if our boat was still running and yes it was - we were in luck. We headed for the boat at 1:30 for a 2pm departure and as soon as we left the harbour we were off sailing. The boat was tilting massivly to the right and we all got soaked but the experience was brilliant. In the afternoon we went snorkelling and saw a few fish and we then spent the night in the middle of a small cove just casually floating in the middle of the waters. Day 39, 20/10/11 Up at 6am after a very rocky, noisy and interupted night but it was all part of the experience. We had breakfast ... read more

Next blog, whoop whoop! After a fantastic time on Magnetic Island, I was a little reluctant to move on. I'd seen so many animals and had really enjoyed just chilling in a hammock by the pool. BUT, I was heading to Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsundays, and from what I'd heard about it, it was well worth leaving Magnetic Island for. So, I hopped on my greyhound bus, and set forth for Airlie Beach. I was picked up by my hostel from the bus station and was taken back to a really clean, pretty little hostel, where I had arrived just in time to watch the nightly movie. What a great way to unwind! Just relaxing in front of the TV after a 5 or so hour bus journey. I spent the next couple of ... read more

So its been a while since I last wrote an entry, which means a fair bit to catch up on, dont worry though its been chilled I won't bore you with pages and pages! So we left Surfers Paradise and headed for Brisbane, we checked into a campsite about 25 mins out of the centre and checked out the local coastal town of Manly (our second Manly in Oz). The next day we took the bus to Brisbane, it was bank holiday monday so there wasnt many people about which was nice in a way. We did a walk which was in our guide book which showed us the main sites within a 3 hour walk, the weather was really nice (and has been every day since!) and it was cool to see another major city. ... read more
