On 24th of December, I undertook an enjoyable bicycle ride to the Norville pub at the CBD for meeting the local couchsurfers (www.couchsurfing.com) there; they have a very nice beer garden there. Afterwards we went to the adjacent pub for another couple of pints and some potato wedges; at 11:15 pm I wanted to attend (roman-catholic) St Pattrick's Christmas carols, but couldn't find the church, as I probably was a little bit drunk... As a consequence I had to content myself with the half-over mass at (Anglican) St. Luke instead, and met organist Mr. Greeding there again afterwards; after some heavy uphill bicycling back home to our house, I immediately fell asleep. Just a peaceful X-mas! ... read more

Arabs wear this type of gown only for traditional festivities. Pretty costly it is! Approximately AUS$1000, Riyan told us. Later on I also had the chance to see Arka's traditional gown (sarih) and, furthermore, special knives/swords they only wear on special festivities.... read more

Unfortunately this time only Robert was there, along with Steve and Max and Zame, but I had two more opportunities later on to get some insights in temple life there, and Buddhist monk's philosophy.... read more

As I was sleeping outside the tent there was immense dew, and thus I woke up at around 5 o'clock; it was fun to watch fauna and flora awake amidst the rainforest with its lush vegetation; turkeys, parrots and wallabies passing by our tent, fog clearing the rainforest.... just amazing! after exploring the site a little bit more (for finding the entrance for our track; and finding out, that there was some blasting of some huge Bunya tree to happen the next days), I prepared myself some tea and ate my sandwich; after some small chat with our "bullshit"-neighbours, Robert got up, and we prepared our stuff for the expedition; but before we could start, some parrots have been very interested in our food ;-) ... we decided to take the grand tour, as we were ... read more

After having joined the bush walker's social Xmas meeting recently at "Flings" and having had some chat about some of their recent tours, and about our coming tour, Robert and I departed (by feet) for Hertz car rental, to pick up our Toyota sedan; it was Sunday, but Hertz had been open, as they also had to cater the Australian army on this day; after driving home to pack our stuff, we made an hour's stop-over at the uni, as there was a Xmas grilling party (=barbie) for all intl. students going on, and as Zami (my house mate) was playing Santa Claus for the children there; at around 12:30 we left uni, and headed towards Crows Nest national park (around 1 to 1 1/2hrs drive north) (where also the main dam for Toowoomba's water reserve ... read more

On Saturday, Steve and Max took me to a multicultural potlatch meeting of some Buddhist monks at a college near the CBD; unfortunately I forgot to bring my cellphone-cam, so I had to take pictures with Steve's phone-cam; at the beginning of the feast, there was some introduction of a senior Brisbane Buddhist-monk about the motive of the evening "compassion and goodwill permeate the world"; approximately 250 people joined the gathering; afterwards people were catered with loads of different fresh dishes and drinks (btw: cold soy milk is really refreshing!); during the eating there were different performances; tai-chi, a Chinese child presenting typical Chinese ballet, a djembe-drum-session,...; finally we all joined in on the stage for: "feliz navidad" and "we are the world" ; -- this was really a peaceful and enjoyable and happy X-mas party! ... read more
