After having joined the bush walker's social Xmas meeting recently at "Flings" and having had some chat about some of their recent tours, and about our coming tour, Robert and I departed (by feet) for Hertz car rental, to pick up our Toyota sedan; it was Sunday, but Hertz had been open, as they also had to cater the Australian army on this day; after driving home to pack our stuff, we made an hour's stop-over at the uni, as there was a Xmas grilling party (=barbie) for all intl. students going on, and as Zami (my house mate) was playing Santa Claus for the children there; at around 12:30 we left uni, and headed towards Crows Nest national park (around 1 to 1 1/2hrs drive north) (where also the main dam for Toowoomba's water reserve is located); after arriving at the national-park we immediately recognized the very loud sound of 1000s of cicadas, sitting in the trees... it was pretty annoying in the beginning, but we got used to it; after some 400-500m walk we arrived at the waterhole, surrounded by huge rocks; a few families were there enjoying the Sunday afternoon, and it was quite relaxing; I took a
swim in the water, while Robert was taking pictures of some crazy guys jumping from the cliffs into the waterhole; some rock wallabies have been our guests, and stole some chips from other guests at the waterhole; when we got back to our car, we headed towards Bunya Mountain in the late evening; on the way there, I saw for the first time in my stay in Australia some cactus... very huge plants! When we were not sure, which direction / intersection to take, a police car reached us, and we thought "OMG!"... but the officer was very friendly, and told us the right direction to Bunya Mountain; after this, Robert and I switched places in the car, and for the first time I was driving on the left lane (..Robert was used to it, as he has already been driving in many countries on the left lane..)... it was not that difficult, as there was no traffic,... but one always has to be very concentrated! after some time, the sealed street suddenly ended, and we had to drive on a unsealed road; thereafter, we encountered a remote and abandoned house, and had a closer look upon it; after that,
after some curvy and steep and windy, narrow road we got towards the top of the ridge, heading for our goal for this day .... the camping site at Bunya Mountain; it was already getting dark, and we hurried to find out, how to apply for the camping place, where 5 or 6 other parties already camped;
(it was easy: just put a few bucks in a sachet, and put it in a chute... the local ranger will pick it up some other day); we quickly unpacked our tent, and prepared some pre-cooked warm food... yummie! in one of the neighbour tents we heard the game "bullshit" going on... I am not sure, how often I have heard the word "bullshit" this night... robert slept in the tent this night, but i decided to camp outside underneath the sky.... beautiful, but dewy the next morning.
