After our decision to split the group for a couple of days it was left to Dunc and I to experience a beautiful weekend of sport. Splitting the group was similar to when the Fellowship of the Ring had to go their separate ways. The only difference is that Lisa is a couple of inches shorter than the dwarf, my hair is curlier than Frodo, Em’s has more wisdom than Gandalf and Dunc looks like an Ork. It took an hour up the motorway to drop off the girls at Brisbane station, we said our goodbyes and then back to Southport. It was sad to see the back of the troublesome twosome but Dunc got over it enough to drive us back. Phew!!! We had a hectic plan for the next four days. As we arrived ... read more

On arrival at Surfer's Paradise (the party town of Queensland) we were immediately coerced into going on a cowboy-themed bar crawl that evening, so we dutifully obliged, with hats, fluorescent pendants and many pictures to show for it! Headed to the beach the following day to recover, and although we had booked a surfing lesson for the afternoon, it was rescheduled for the next day, which we were quite relieved about, as we were still fairly knackered (no, not hungover!) from the night before! We actually then spent the rest of the day either jumping through waves, or surfing through them on bodyboards, which was a laugh but incredibly hard work, especially as there weren't too many decent waves, and when we did manage to catch a good one, it often ended up with us getting ... read more

11th-13th May - Reunion in Surfers As we made our way further down the East Coast towards our final destination of Sydney we made a two night stop in the party place that is Surfers Paradise. However, just before actually arriving in Surfers the Oz Bus made a slight detour to visit Australia's only Zorbing Park. This place is where the strange extreme sport of Zorbing takes place. For those who don't know, zorbing consists of a huge rubber ball, 40 litres of water and 3 brave passengers! The ball is filled with water, the passengers jump in and the ball is then pushed down a big hill. Sounds fairly simple and it is great fun! We got very wet and slightly dizzy but it was all worth it! After the adrenaline rush of Zorbing we ... read more

Hello, We arrived in Surfers Paradise and were picked up and taken to our hostel. On arrival we presented our Travelbugs voucher which entitled us to 1 night free accommodation at this place and the manager informed us that as from that morning no Travelbugs vouchers would be accepted anywhere as they had gone into liquidation. We thought our luck would run out fairly soon as it had been a week since we'd found out and we had got away with it until then. We have been so lucky - we each spent $1,000 with them and luckily had just about come to the end of our trips with them so all in all we barely lost anything - only 2 nights accommodation which were free with the deal we booked anyway and seeing as we ... read more

Oh boy oh boy - going to a place with paradise in its name. Buckle up because this place is going to be good - right? Well no, not by a long way! I have a problem with Surfers and its not necessarily to do with the weather (yes it rained every half hour!). But by far the biggest sin this place has is despite its spectacular looks with all its skyscrapers and squeaky clean apartment blocks; this supposed 'party place' has all the atmosphere of Milton Keynes library on a Friday night. The only highlight was the swim wear model 2008 competition, but even then I don't recall a local participant. The only other highlight was.... eerm, no that was it. Even the waves were a disappointment - big yes but messy as hell so ... read more

Well that’s not what they thought at the Emirates check in desk when they saw him….. Anyway Lisa and Duncan had made it all the way over to Brisbane, after 3 flights and 24 hours of travelling and we were over 1 hour late picking them up! We managed to get stuck in traffic not unlike the M25 on a Monday morning, as we headed the 100km up the M1 to Brisbane airport in the early hours. Despite Duncan’s 2 day hangover they were in good spirits and it was great to see them. The sun was shining and they were officially ‘down under’. We stopped briefly to meet Dunc’s mate Shaun at work, before heading back to meet Kerry (Shaun’s better half) at home in Southport, and then we went out for a big Ozzie ... read more
