In the winter of 2008, more than 10000 Southern Humpback whales were spotted off the headland at Point Lookout. Their numbers are slowly but steadily increasing with each season, and this is testament to our adjusted thinking and understanding regarding these magnificent creatures. Recent reports indicate that in the 2009 season their number had increased to around 12000, and the 2010 season promises to draw that number closer to 14000. The humpbacks haven't always had such a carefree time in our recent past because up until the early sixties there was a whaling station very nearby that almost brought them to the brink of extinction in these waters. In 1962, at the end of a ten year killing spree, the whaling station at Tangalooma on Moreton Island ceased to operate. The reason was simple, their Norwegian ... read more

2/26/10 I just finished my first week of work at Tiffany & Co. in Sydney. I thought I’d be doing the same thing as in the states but turns out there’s not much to do. The US call center is the only place that can Australia orders over the phone, we don’t have access to any records for returns, repairs, orders, etc and none of the stores ever answer their phones. So basically all I do, along with one other girl, is tell customers if a store has something in stock, transfer calls to what is usually an answering machine at a store or when the customer gets really pissed keep calling different extensions till someone finally picks up. Oh and none of the stores have direct lines, they all go to us…imagine trying to explain ... read more

G'day from another awesome week in Australia! This past week has been a busy one, but definately fun, especially towards the end! As we all know St. Patricks Day was this past Tuesday the 17th and of course we want to go out and celebrate. The day is not big here in Aussieland, but is still celebrated somewhat. So we got into our green gear and went out to a bar called 'Down Under Bar', clever name right? It was absolutely packed and literally couldn't move! It was definitely a fun night, but will not compare to St. Patricks Day celebrations back in Dublin, Ireland two years ago. This past Thursday the 19th, I went on a field trip for the day to Brisbane Forest Park. This trip was with my BIOL2001 class or Australia's Terrestrial ... read more

Fri March 13- This weekend was the first of two weekends which I’ll be going on trips with my Australian Marine Ecosystems class. We went to the Moreton Bay Research Center on North Stradbroke Island. The day started early, we met at the main UQ bus stop at 7am to catch a ferry. There were 58 students from the class on this one particular trip. Anyway, we took about an hr and a half bus ride to get to the ferry (mainly because of traffic). When we got to the ferry we were surprised. We had figured we’d be unloading our bags and carrying them onto the ferry which would transport us to the island and we’d be picked up there. No such thing happened. This was one of the ferries where you drive right onto ... read more

There is a camp spot on the eastern coast of Straddie we nicknamed ‘Camp Pandanus’ as it has two massive Pandanus trees shielding the spot from both Northerlies and the prevailing South easterly wind that blows there like the Sou’wester does on the West coast. We have camped on Straddy haf a dozen times and Camp Pandanus was always taken, given the shelter it has and it is one of the few spots perched on the first dune back from the beach giving it ocean views. Well, we had it marked on our GPS (thanks Chris we finally used it =)) and low and behold it was free!!! Yippeeee Yahooo welcome to Straddie! We have set up our full camp and have been here for almost two weeks just swimming, walking, a couple of surfs and ... read more

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=20390&l=47436&id=503645207 Today we woke up at 8 which is fairly early because of our plans. We grabbed a bit and headed out. Our plan was to go to North Stradbrock Island for the Day. The island is one of a few which block the mouth of the Brisbane River. We took a train from the train station to Cleveland a suburb which is closest to the island. In Cleveland we found a place called 1st Choice Liquor Superstore. It was massive...the size of oakridges cafeteria. It had everything you could think of, but only two canadian beers. The best thing was finding a 25 litre bottle of wine which costed 2000 dollars australian. From Cleveland we took a ferry to the island and then a bus 20 km to a part called Point Lookout which is ... read more

After a few days in Brisbane, staying with Sean's friends Ian and Ashlee in their beautiful house, we were off for a week camping on Straddie (we being me, Sean and Liam). Before leaving we kept checking the weather forecast every day, fearing the worst. This left us none the wiser as, like the BBC forecast, it kept changing every day. So we set off, hoping for a least a few days before the heavens would open on us and wash everything away. As it turned out, although the weather wasn't brilliant, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as we had feared and we stayed all week. Straddie is a sand island (like Fraser Island further north, only smaller) just off the coast of Brisbane. Sean has been going there for years with Liam, Ian and ... read more

December 31st 2007 - we awoke to the pitter patter of rain outside...went for a walk and to the pub for an early drink with Kevin, Janet, Brenda, Melvin & Ricky - sussing out whether we were going to start the evening there - we decided against it as the seating area was not very big, plus it was going to be packed - and Carol & Melvin knew of this kick-ass place down the road...the bowling club, Barney Rubble's feet were already doing the flintstones fandango. We all got ready in the Big Brother house and Steve & Jan came over for the night with their friend, Stuart. After a couple of drinks, we got the minibus (which Carol & Melvin had prearranged) to the bowling club - it was still raining at this point, ... read more
