A few incidentals in Cairns was on the cards this morning before moving up the mountainside to Kuranda. We did not have the chance to stay long in this little village a few weeks ago so we were back to see what it had on offer. First impressions were that it was an alternative spot of the world and I learned today that this was the case as during the 70s the village was a bit of a hippie haven. Kuranda has its fair share of tourists and the markets that are open daily are a big drawcard. We sauntered around for a few hours and were particularly impressed with a local honey shop and the vendor selling homemade icecream. On our way out of the village we stopped to see Barron Falls. Kuranda is set among ... read more

This morning we headed off to ride the Kuranda Scenic Railway up to the small township of Kuranda. The railway line was built in the late 1800s to ensure an all weather supply route to settlements on the Atherton Tablelands, in particular the township of Herberton which was regularly left isolated during the wet season and its citizens left at risk of starving before the road became passable again. We drove the car to the car park for the Skyrail as we had booked to return via the Skyrail cable cars. We were collected by minibus from the car park and driven to the Freshwater Station on the Cairns to Kuranda railway line to catch the train. Jocelyn, the manager of our apartments, booked this tour for us over the weekend and convinced us to upgrade ... read more

This Sunday was an early start and with that, we saw hundreds of bats hanging upside down in the tress as we headed to the Skyrail. While on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, we saw amazing views of the rainforest, the Coral Sea, and the Barron Gorge. We glided meters above the World Heritage Tropical Rainforest that descended and left us at Red Peak where we were able to experience the best views of the gorge and falls from lookouts at Barron Falls Station. We eventually ended our Skyrail tour in Kuranda. Kuranda was one of the best adventures we had. In Kuranda there was the: Kuranda Koala Gardens, the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, and Kuranda Birdworld. Our first stop was the Koala Gardens where we got to hold and cuddle a koala. This is the moment where ... read more

An early start on what is looking like a better day weather-wise in Cairns. I took the shuttle bus from reception down into town to catch the Kuranda Scenic Railway from the station, which takes you through the rainforests to Kuranda (guess the clue's in the title...). The railway station is deserted for trains, other than this one - a vintage looking, 10 wooden carriages-long affair, with, and in total contrast to the rest of the train, a brightly coloured engine carriage. It looks like something off an old Miss Marple movie - I'm half expecting to be joined by the prime suspects sporting cravats and smoking pipes... The carriages are restored 100 year old compartments, with wooden and leather seats, and pull down windows. It's humid beyond belief so the leather seats are not necessarily ... read more

Tuesday 30th – we had to get going fairly promptly this morning as we were catching a train! We were going up the mountain to Kuranda, a journey of some 15 kms – not far in railway terms but it involved a steep mountain climb. We had booked our trip yesterday at the caravan park so firstly we had to drive to the Skyrail terminus which was only about 5 kms away from the caravan park. We were quite early so, along with plenty of other early birds, we had to wait a while before the coach arrived to take us to Freshwater Railway Station. Everything worked like clockwork and by 9:30 we were sat on the platform waiting for the train. Before that we had time to look in the gift shop and wander around ... read more

Very sad to be leaving here - one of the best holiday destinations I've been to. And probably the best time of yeart o be here too, as it's not too hot, just a comfortable 28 C. Andno jellyfish in the sea. Today we went up to Kuranda - I went by Sky rail and what a fabulous ride that was! It was really high & I got a car all to myself - up above the rainforest canopy, looking down on the trees... The village of Kuranda itself was lovely too, all sorts of crafty stuff - it has an interesting history! Then back down on thescenic railway - all pullman coaches dating back 100 years. Another fun day - I'll be getting sensoty overload soon!! Anyway, flying to Brisbane tomorrow afternoon, but down to ... read more

July 27, I have decided to really slow it down and just do an afternoon horseback ride. Then that leaves the evening open and the morning open to sleep in a little resort my things. Plus I have not yet had a night out I have been so tired that it just wasn't going to happen. The trip to the horse farm takes over an hour cause we have to go up the coast to pick people then drive back down. But we finally get there and I love to ride horses. It's a great match from the start. Alfie my horse was an outback mustang who was caught and put on the farm. So my wild nature fits real good with Alfie. He's a silver with a little black and not quite an Arabian stallion, ... read more

We were down to three full days left in the Port Douglas/Cairns region and had two full day adventures that we had to fulfill. We decided to make the drive to the SkyRail back toward Cairns and see this area of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Rainforest. This area, which includes the Daintree Rainforest, is the oldest continually surviving tropical rainforest on earth. Dating back over 100 million years, the rainforest accounts for about a quarter of a percent of Australia's total landmass but house 50% of the continent's bird species, 60% of the butterfly species and large percentages of the ferns and orchids. The SkyRail was an aggressive undertaking and now allows visitors to ride a gondola 7.5 kilometers through the rainforest canopy. The gondola cars seat 6, so our family had one to ourselves. ... read more

Well, we woke up to rain but decided we had to venture out anyways. We headed down to Kuranda. It's a small town in the rainforest area. There is a train and a cablecar that go through the area. On our way out we encounter stopped traffic on the road yet again. We were stuck there for 30 - 45 minutes because you guessed it...a tree fell on the road again. The rain wasn't letting up and we found out the train wasn't running that day due to the weather. The cablecar was running but we decided against it as we couldn't see much anyways with the low cloud. Kuranda does have some markets so we decided to go and check those out. They are very much hippie markets. Heaps of things from Thailand and SE ... read more
