This morning we get up early so to miss the hot morning sun and rush to the train station to board the Kuranda Scenic Railway that is over 100 years old and goes through the rainforest up to Kuranda. It takes 1.45 hours to travel along this scenic route, through 15 tunnels and over some spectacular bridges high up on the mountain side. The train stopped at a lookout for Barron Gorge and Falls a huge waterfall that in the wet season roars down the mountain, but today was a small trickle. At about 10.15am we arrived back at Kuranda village where we spent a couple of hours looking round the markets and shops. The 7.5km cableway Skyrail was our route back to Cairns over the jungle canopy. It was amazing travelling down over the ... read more

Woke up at 6.50am which when you come to think about it, really is a stupid time to be waking up at whilst on vacation. I think it's because my two Swedish roomies were up and about preparing to go diving and snorkling respectively...I had a 'snorkel' back in the 70's, it was blue and had a fur lined hood that went rancid when it got wet, imagine floating on the surface observing fishies wearing that...it's just not safe and the EHO would have to condemn it or better still have a warning notice inside 'not to be worn in rain'!!! Today, the sunburnt one got the 1x bus to the Tapukai Aboriginal Centre and had an amazing time. The presentations and dances were really good, I threw a boomerang which actually came back (hehehe, it's ... read more

October 18, 2008 We needed to “regroup” this morning. So we grabbed the laptop and bit the bullet and paid $5 an hour at the “Rehab” Internet cafe in downtown Port Douglas and forced ourselves to make some real plans. A cup of coffee for Joe and a mocha for me helped ease the chore of calling and connecting with hotels and airline companies. We were able to book a hotel in Darwin (we fly there on Oct. 20) and a flight from Melbourne to Christchurch, NZ on November 13. Got a good rate on the flight and the Australian dollar’s big decline is making this trip cost a lot less than we had predicted. We also hadn’t planned on sleeping in a Jucy van so many nights and that has cut the expenses. Had a ... read more

We took the sky rail out of Cairns, basically a ski cable car which reminded us a lot about our time in France, apart from the scenery of course. It took high over the rain forest canopy and up into the hills to the small tourist town of Kuranda. Like most of these high Queensland settlements it was first a base for logging the large rain forest trees before gold was discovered and then it boomed with gold rush fever. Today it is a sleepy city escape for tourists and it's just a massive tourist market. One long street full of shops and galleries selling Australian and Chinese gifts, a few nice bits and a lot of tat. We had a great time wondering around the markets and Aboriginal displays lapping up their creative culture. After ... read more

I had a few days before I left for home but very little money to do much with, so after coming back from Undara I headed once again to Kuranda. Its nicer and quieter and cheaper to stay there than in Cairns, and of course I still didn't have a cassowary to my name. Not having seen a cassowary on a trip to north Queensland is like not seeing an elephant when you go into the elephant house at the zoo. I mean, what kind of birdwatcher can't find a six foot tall bird?! So Kuranda was my best bet. Last ditch effort was spending a night at Cassowary House just outside the town. All the birders that come to north Queensland go there and they all see cassowaries because the damn things come visiting the ... read more

After a lie in and a late breakfast we were picked up from our hotel at about 11.30 for our day trip to Kuranda. The trip was run by Glenn a very nice chap and there were only 7 other guests, the coach journey took about 40mins again along the beautiful sea coastal road to the skyrail station just outside Cairns. The Skyrail system was installed above the protected rainforest over a distance of about 15km with the tallest tower being over 40m high. There were 2 stops enroute to Kuranda Village, these being for rainforest board walks and a waterfall lookout point. It was a strange feeling gliding over the tops of the trees, but the views were sensational. We arrived in Kuranda village which is located upon the atherton tablemountains, this village was known ... read more

The weather seems a little better this morning. Our plan is to get back close to Cairns so that we do not have to far to travel tomorrow, when the camper has to be returned. With that in mind, we are aiming for Ellis Beach, which is about 30 km from Cairns. As we travel, the day gradually brightens, and when we get to Ellis Beach, we have full-on sunshine. However, the campsite does not have any powered sites left, and after spending the previous evening powerless, we had realised just how useful power is... so we decided to move on. Our next hopeful site is in Kuranda, which is about 30km away, but still just 30 km from Cairns. When we arrive there is no one manning reception. We wait around 5 minutes with no ... read more

We headed up the mountain range to visit the town of Kuranda. We took the skyrail up and loved the opportunity for a birds eye view on the forest canopy and nearby Barron Gorge. The town was very much touristy but we enjoyed it nonetheless. They especially had some neat markets and a couple of spectacular art galleries! We took a walk along the river and through the forest which was pleasant. After a nap in the local park (no we weren’t the only ones looking like bums) we met our host for the night Frank and Helen (HC). They were great. We actually stayed in their caravan which was parked into the rainforest and again we enjoyed the freedom of showering out in the nature (albeit breezy). We partook in conversation and a drink around ... read more

I wanted to see if I could add videos to the last post, but it was taking too long to upload and I wanted to go to bed. Sooo here are my videos of the skyrail (not very exciting), an aboriginal dance as performed by children, and Barron Falls so you can get an idea of just how large it is. Ok..so after weeks of trying, the only video that would upload is the skyrail. Ah well.... read more
