Our last day on the Island Suntanner tour today. We went to the Kuranda rainforest this morning, getting the cable car over the mountains. I was actually very brave on this cable car and didn't make as much fuss as I did on the one that went over to Sentosa in Singapore. (Maybe jumping out of a plane gave me some new found strength!!) Anyway, when we got to Kuranda we had a look around the market stalls and then went to the Koala Gardens. We saw crocodiles swimming in a lake and lots of turtles and lizards too. Kuranda - Queensland This village is perched 300 metres up in the rainforest and makes a real great day out from Cairns. There is an abundance of flora and fauna, from pythons to ginger plants, bandicoots to orchids. Kuranda was inhabited by the Djabugay aboriginal people and their lifestyle changed dramatically when the area was logged and mined for gold by foreigners. ... read more

There was a lot to see on the two day tour of the rain-forests of the Atherton Tableland west of Cairns, but it did include an awful lot of waterfalls, although in the heat we were extremely grateful for the opportunity to swim. The first day also included a volcanic lake, and several large trees (in a rain-forest - amazing!) which were actually very spectacular. In the evening, we went to a pub which was the main drinking hole for all the local Aborigines. Now these people knew how to have a good time. They were hugging each other, dancing on tables, re-enacting tribal ... read more
