After a delightful 13 hour journey through the night we arrive at Hervey Bay coach station, where i see someone i used to work with in M&S - small world, but he's heading down to Sydney, so i might meet up with him there! Get to our hostel and a few hours later we are reunited with Neil! We have a laze in the sunshine by the pool - you know how it is!! Then later we head into the town in search of the mexican all you can eat buffet - we'd seen a sign earlier in the day for it. We manage to find the 'buffet' can't believe they called it a buffet, it was a lousy attempt in a hostel and looked like a school dinner and there was no food, so we ... read more

Happy Easter Everyone! The oz bus took us from Airlie beach to Kroombit cattle station which was a compulsary stop. We didnt get there until late evening. It is a working cattle ranch and all the people working there had cowboy hats on. After a meal we were taught how to crack a whip - it is harder than it looks! I couldnt get the hang of it and ended up whipping my arm! There was also a mechanical bull which James and katie went on (James lasting 30 secs, katie lasting 1 sec). In the morning, after getting up at 6am some of the group (including katie) went on horse-back to round up the goats. When they got back we all went clay pigeon shooting - which was wicked fun! We had 5 clays ... read more

Arrived at Hervey Bay ( similar to small town America - spralling malls etc! we were suitably un-impressed) where we checked into the scummiest hostel we have come across yet! It came with bed bugs included - nice! luckily we were only there for 1 night, and were up and the crack of dawn the next day for our Fraser Island briefing. We were doing a 4x4 self drive tour, and the basic guidelines were dont drive in the saltwater or feed the dingoes or else!! We were put in a group with 2 french couples, an english girl called Liz and another brother and sister combo ( we seem to find them wherever we go!) Helene and Andreas from Sweden. It turned out to be a fab group and we all got on ( ... read more

... read more

The best part of the whole trip to completely make up for the past few weeks of rain and being ill was Fraser Island. This is the biggest sand island in the world with more sand than the Sahara Desert and just across the bay from Hervey Bay. We arrived in Hervey Bay on the Friday night in a youth hostel called Koalas. The Hostel was the biggest we've stayed in, with a pool, bar, club and loads of people there. We booked our trip to Fraser Island through the hostel because everyone had been recommending it to us. It cost about 100 squid with everything included, for 3 days self driving and 2 nights camping. We were organised into groups the day before where we had to meet in the bar for a talk on ... read more

We have spent the last few nights on fraser island. Great place. Huge long beaches. and lots of sun. Ryan is feeling a bit under the weather, and it may be due to the beer he was consuming, and lack of drinking the water. Either way it went great. We had alot of fun. We met some english blokes, and two irish gals. They seem like lots of fun. The island itself was good right up until it started raining. The night it rained there were four tents for everyone to sleep in (i brought my own thankfully) and they leaked like french safes. Actually some of them filled up with water and drowned out the sleepers. Everyone ended up taking refuge in the trucks and packed togeather like sardines. It was a really really rough ... read more

Fraser island is the biggest sand island in the world measureing 127km long and between 5 and 27 kms wide as well as being about 620mts deep. it is said to contain more sand than the entire Sahara desert, and i thought it was gonna be a little sand pit of a place, how wrong, i should have learned by now that aussies don't do small anything. For the couple of days before we went to fraser island we stayed in Hervey Bay the closed bit of main land to the island. Hervey bay doesn't have much there in the way of entertainment, but is a great place for relaxing and just energising after time on the road, we got lucky booking into a great little hostel, which has been the first place to have proper ... read more

The night before we left Airlie Beach it absolutely chundered it down, as you can imagine we didn’t get much sleep with the rain bouncing off our van. The rain went on all night causing our van roof to leak. We had to use tea towels to soak up the rain coming in through the side window. It was slightly annoying that we didn’t get much sleep as we had a really long drive the next day. We set off from Airlie Beach at around 8.45am and headed back onto the A1, the Bruce Highway. We stopped twice for toilet breaks and for food but we were almost driving for a solid 11 hours and covered between 800-900 kilometres. The drive went relatively quick with no problems along the way. We arrived in Hervey Bay just ... read more
