We got up super early (yet again...am resigned to the fact that I'm just not going to get lie-ins anymore!) and made our way to the Kookaburra Hostel where we were booked to head off on our grand adventure! The hostel was pretty mad when we arrived, we had to check in and drop off our bags with loads of other people trying to do the same before we could go and wait for our lift down to where we were meeting to 4x4, on top of this 2 of the girls in our group had their bags stolen from their rooms as they were getting ready fto leave! Luckily the thief was apprehended by guys and the bags received with nothing missing. When we arrived at the garage, we had to go through loads of ... read more

Hey folks!!

Two in one day, I'm getting good at this now!! I'm actually in Byron Bay killing time waiting for the night bus, it's been really nice here a place I'd love to stay longer in, it's so chilled and relaxed, we took a stroll up the lighthouse and stood at the most Easternly point of Australia which is cool!! So a little more about Fraser island, we woke at about six to hear the boys suggesting they wake us up for the sunrise, luckily they decided to let us sleep (remember my comment about Anna and Charlotte being comatose?!) and went to the beach and watched it themselves, apparently we didn't miss much so I'm happy we got the extra hours sleep! We had some brekkie, packed up the truck and headed on our way! We ... read more

We got to Hervey Bay off the night bus about ten am and got picked up by an absolutely crazy man who at first seemed ok but soon got a little irritating and I think racist which wasn't fun! He had the dirtiest laugh ever! But it was free so we couldn't complain! We had a free nights stay in the Koala's hostel there as we had to leave early the next morning to start our Fraser island trip and we had a briefing that afternoon where we got put into two groups, we were in Group A which soon became 'Team A', the four of us and six guys who were all awesome which was really lucky, we all got on brilliantly straight away and it really made the trip that much better. We had ... read more

We arrived in Hervey Bay at 4pm on Wednesday 6 June and checked into Kookaburra's Backpackers. It was still raining heavily so we just hung around the hostel and watched Traffic in the TV room that evening. We sat outside the front of the hostel with two Irish girls who worked there and had a couple of drinks before going to bed. We woke up on Thursday to the sound of rain so we spent some time on the internet before going to see Shrek 3 in the afternoon. At 6pm, we had a one hour briefing on our trip to Fraser Island and were put into our group of 10 people. Once again, due to the rain, we had dinner at the hostel and then we just sat outside (undercover) chatting until bedtime. On Friday, ... read more

On Friday, after another early start, we got into our groups and picked up our new wheels from the garage. Our ride, a toyota truck which had been used down the mines, we were told was "about 4 years old" despite it having 160k on the clock and being a really faded cream colour. Our group of eleven filled it right up, two of them had been on my boat in the Whitsundays and the rest were a mix of english, irish, dutch, german and brazilian. We designated the dutch guy, Michael, as our driver for the trip as he'd been driving a 4x4 around most of his time in Australia, though we weren't so sure it was a good choice when he nearly rolled it at the first roundabout on the way to the ... read more

Here's the latest update on the happenings down under. Still living in Sydney and I'm up to the same old things. The insurance sales is going well and still trying to save up a bit of money for some more travel down the road. Things are a bit monotonous at the moment as far as the travelling goes, but at least a visit from the infamous Nairb N Nairbonson...a.k.a. Matt...a.k.a. Jack Black gave me an excuse to do a bit more travel. For anyone who doesn't know him, Nairb is a friend of mine from Canada who took a few weeks of vacation in Australia to see me. I feel privileged to be worth a trip to the other side of the world. I had to work a lot for the early part of the trip ... read more

We arrived in Hervey Bay and were chuffed when we were all put in the same room. We met up with Nick from Sydney aswell. That night we drank far too much goon then went to the Night Club next door where the drinks were far too cheap to turn down and had a great time...we also heard there were over 100 Bull Sharks spotted that night only 5 metres off the beach!! The next day feeling slightly worse for wear we chilled around the hostel until the Fraser Island meeting at 3pm...with most of the organised trips you have to go to a meeting to teel you all about it, organise you into your groups tell you what food/drink/essentials you need to take etc.. The next day we were all up at the crack ... read more

Caught tour over to Fraser Island. One of only two ways of getting there. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. Fast facts: Has over 44 freash water lakes. These lakes are blue, blue, blue with beautiful white silica sand. Yes it has all of the usual snakes and spiders. The beach on the eastern side is 90 km long and is and is the National highway, and local airstrip. Some individuals on our tour took a brief flight over Fraser Island from this Beach/Highway. Freash water table is 90 M above sea level and it is estimated that the water basin holds about 44 million MEGA Liters (a mega liter is a million liters!) Fraser Island was also used as Australia's special forces jungle warfare training ground. It was here that ... read more
