Arrived at Hervey Bay ( similar to small town America - spralling malls etc! we were suitably un-impressed) where we checked into the scummiest hostel we have come across yet! It came with bed bugs included - nice! luckily we were only there for 1 night, and were up and the crack of dawn the next day for our Fraser Island briefing. We were doing a 4x4 self drive tour, and the basic guidelines were dont drive in the saltwater or feed the dingoes or else!! We were put in a group with 2 french couples, an english girl called Liz and another brother and sister combo ( we seem to find them wherever we go!) Helene and Andreas from Sweden. It turned out to be a fab group and we all got on ( always a gd thing when you are spending 3 full days in each others pockets!) really well. We set off for a mad dash round the supermarket ( we were late for the ferry!) to get supplies for the next few days - it was like supermarket sweep gone mad!! After just catching the very slow ferry to the island, we headed off inland towards
Lake Mackenzie. Unfortunately the weather was abit poo ( windy and cloudy ), but the lake was still unbelievably beautiful. Gorgeous white sand, clear blue waters ( not salty for once - yeahwith a couple of stray dingoes thrown in ( far too cheeky for their own good, and not at all scared of humans!). After a relaxing swim, headed out to the coast to find a suitable camp site for the night. The idea was that all 4 vans were going to camp together so we were all in a big group, unfortunately, we all got separated and ended up camping on our own. Was no probs though - after BBQing in the dark ( interesting when you are trying to cook chicken and not give people salmonella!), we chatted for afew hrs ( it gets dark by 6.30 here), we were all, i am ashamed to say, in bed by 9.30pm - we are soo rock and roll!!! But we did get up at the 6 the following morn as we had loads to cram in! Matt drove the second day and did a v.gd job of it - think he is born to be an off-roader! we
drove up to Eli Creek for an early morn swim/wash ( not showers or toilets where we were camping - we were definately roughing it!!) which was ridiculously cold ( v.gd for hangovers so they say!).We then made way up east coast beach past the wreck of the Moheno, up to Indian Head look out. We hoped to see Tiger sharks in the ocean below from up on the cliffs, but unfortunatley we lucked out and there were none to be seen that day. Last stop of the day was Champayne pools ( so named as they are giant rock pools where waves wash over , causing lots of bubbly bubbles!) which were lethal as the rocks surrounding the pools were covered in uber-sharp barnacles and coral. Needless to say, just our luck - a giant wave hit us when in the top pool, washing me and Helene over the rocks into the other pool, and causing plenty of pain and mangled skin! I looked like i had been in a fight with a rabid dingo!! Scratches all over body and blood everywhere! Luckily no major damage done, but just hurt like hell as we were in saltwater!!! Camped that
eve with 2 other vans from our hostel so, had abit of a mad one and plenty of goon was consumed by all! Matt ended up in the sea at midnight as it was then officially his bday and the other guys thought it only fitting he was thrown in to celebrate!! The following morning we were still up at 7am but everyone was just that liittle bit slower moving and a slightly green shade of tan!! Had a v.large goanna ( giant monitor lizard ) in camp that morn which was cool to see! Spent the day at Lake Wabby ( one giant sandune with a freshater lake at the bottom - much fun to run as fast as you can down and fall into!!). After a very bumpy drive home ( ok the whole 3 days was bumpy really!) we ended up in Hervey Bay for the night, and went out for dinner with our van crew members to celebrate Matts bday ( again!)
All in all Fraser Island was amazing place, but Hervey Bay definately one to be missed if you can!
Catch ya soon, keep in touch . . . . next stop . . . Agnes Water
