Checked into the beaches resort and spent the day catching up on sleep, laundry and went for a stroll to check out the local area, which was pretty boring! But I did manage to catch the highlights of West Ham beating Man Utd 1-0, I was very pleased, especially with the latest run of results and goings on! Got up real early the next day for our Fraser Island trip. Jo got the short straw and had to do the food shopping for 11 people in a total of 11mins, she was not happy! I got the cool job of driving the big 4x4 down to the docks and reversing it onto the ferry. I was chuffed! Met up with our crewe of 11 people, collected our tents and camp gear, stocked up on food and ... read more

Brisbane We left Stanthorpe and headed towards Brisbane, a journey of 250km. We were both very excited to get back to the ocean, which we hadn't seen for 5 weeks! The drive to the coast was a lot easier than the drive from the coast had been because it was mostly downhill as we decended the 922m above sea level that we had been working in. Time to get rid of these farmer tans! We got into Brisbane in the late afternoon and went for a walk around the Queensland University of Technology campus. This brought back memories of being in school and campus life. Carolyn read the Lonely planet book a bit and I had a snooze in the shade in the Botanic Gardens that are adjacent to the university. We also walked around a ... read more

Arrived in Hervey Bay lunchtime (after another delightful coach trip) where we were greeted by our hostel manager who took us to our "friendly" hostel. We immediatley loaded ourselves with brochures to research our trip to Fraser Island which is the biggest sand island in the world for those not in the know - see i know my stuff! We booked our trip and departed for Fraser Island on Sunday morning after a quiet night in. We were picked up by our tour operator in a 4x4 bus thing (Fraser has no roads, it's all sand innit!) our guide was a very animated guy called Terry. After introductions to the rest of the group (all swedes) off we headed to Fraser! We arrived and headed straight for lake mackenzie which is one of the most popular ... read more

Went on a 3-day 4WD safari on the brilliant Fraser Island - the world's largest sand island. And when I say large, I mean more than just a piddly sandspit in the middle of the ocean! It's 123km long, has an area of 184,000 hectares and it's sand dunes reach heights of 200m! (don't you love my geeky facts) Set off in 2 cars of 8, picking up our shopping list and booze on the way. Luckily had a really great group of 16 - mostly Brits, the usual funny Irish guys, some Americans to make fun of, the token Geordie joker and a few Europeans, including Germans who are always a bit weird! Was brilliant driving through the sand and on some rough terrain - must admit the boys were the better drivers! Highlights included: ... read more

After a fantastic time in Airlie beach..we drove a mere 800km drive south to Hervey Bay. We were traveling with a (crazy) couple from London, who also had a camper, so spirits were high. Fraser Isalnd...oggy oggy oggy!! After three long driving days (passing through Mackay, Sarina, Clairview, Malbourough, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg & Childers) we arrived. It was slamming down with rain, so yet again we waited 3-4 days for the weather to clear. Many people who went to Fraser at this time told us that the weather was seriously ferocious, some even experienced a tornado!! they couldn't leave the van, which also means they couldn't cook, trek, swim, etc..So it was a good call to wait for better weather. During this time Ally von beavercatcher and I went Whale watching aboard the 'Tasman Venture'. We ... read more

So, another day, another blog!! I've just been on a 3 day jeep safari of Fraser Island, the worlds' largest sand island. Got to drive around in big toyota landcruisers with 9 other people and generally have a laugh. On the first day we went to lake Mckenzie. Beautiful white sands, crystal clear, blue, fresh water. At one point we saw 5 people swimming accross the lake. Although they were about half way, foolishly claimed that I could still beat them to the other side, forgetting that I stopped training a good 9 years ago!!! "Go on then" was the unsurprising response. So I did. Hurrah for me! It was a lot further than it looked though.... First night was particularly entertaining. We camped up near another group from a rival company, who had much flimsier ... read more

Fraser Island Having being told that it is sunny on Fraser Island 360 days of the year, you might think it was not unreasonable to expect some sunshine...but no, we must've seen the only 3 days of rain for the whole year... and it rained enough in those 3 days to keep the population from drought for the next 3 years. And so our group of 10 - myself, Thomas, Louise & Oonagh from Fermanagh, Stu & Jill (soon to be) from Virginia, Nathan, Beverley, Laura and Tash from England - met up at 6.30am for our "briefing" which consisted of a supervised alcochol purchase from the agents convenient bottleshop around the corner and some food shopping, some warnings about dingos and riding the clutch from our 4WD company, and the rest was up to us! ... read more

Okay, so I did the surf lessons the next day, and they were so much fun. Me, and my swedish friend, Johanna were amazed at how well we were doing. We stood up plenty a times, and I got my French Canadian friend, Julien to snap pictured of me while doing it. Our lessons lasted 2 and a half hours! The weather turned out to be a tad rainy afterwards, so I decided to cancel the flying plans. My birthday was amazing. I couldn't have asked for a funner day! Matt, my friend from Winnipeg, was giving me digeradoo lessons, when 3 of my british friends surprised me with 2 Tim-Tams, along with 19 tea light candles! It was so nice! I was so sad to leave the next day. It was hard too, because me ... read more

So after a mamoth journey in from Kroombit, we checked into Koala's, and found out that to get the pizzas that we so desperately craved, it would require a 2 hr round trip walk..or pay 5 dollars extra for delivery...not going to happen! So will and i braved it, made it to eagle boys 5 mins before it shut, and got some awesome pizzas! On the way there, several cars drove past with people lugging cans of beer at us out the window...quickly realised Hervey Bay sucked! The next day we played a bit of cricket, good fun, and then met up with the rest of the group who ould be going to Fraser with us. The briefing lasted ages, with us being put in a group of 11 which included the 3 of us, Shane ... read more
