Arrived in Hervey Bay lunchtime (after another delightful coach trip) where we were greeted by our hostel manager who took us to our "friendly" hostel.
We immediatley loaded ourselves with brochures to research our trip to Fraser Island which is the biggest sand island in the world for those not in the know - see i know my stuff!
We booked our trip and departed for Fraser Island on Sunday morning after a quiet night in. We were picked up by our tour operator in a 4x4 bus thing (Fraser has no roads, it's all sand innit!) our guide was a very animated guy called Terry. After introductions to the rest of the group (all swedes) off we headed to Fraser! We arrived and headed straight for lake mackenzie which is one of the most popular attractions. After a 40 minute bumpy ride we finally arrived at the lake which was very busy due to the nice weather and everyone else heading there first too! It was LOVELY and i could swim as i had been assured there were no sharks - "of course no bloody sharks it's a lake" was Terry's response! Whatev Tez! After lake mackenzie we had lunch
and then headed on to lake wabbywhich wasn't quite as picturesque as mackenzie but again no sharks - yaye! There were however massive flies called marsh flies which are big buggers that bite!
We left lake wabby and it was on to our accomodation for the night which was chalets in the middle of nowhere where Terry made us steak and taught us about spiders - bless!
Day 2 on Fraser had us up early for breakfast (i tried veggimite and my mate marmite is much better fyi) we headed to the Maheno ship wreck which is a cruise ship which was retired in 1934 and bought by the Japanese , it however got caught in a storm on transfer to Japan and ran a ground on Fraser Island. After several unsuccesful attempts to move it they decided to leave it there and use it for bomb practice instead, clearly not very good at blowing up stuff as it's still there!! . After the ship wreck we went on to Eli creek which is a natural creek which we walked through and saw a big snake - i should be on the discovery channel with this shit shouldn't i?!
On
from the creek to the north of Fraser we visited Indian Head which is basically the cliffs that Captain cook called Indian head because there was an aborigine up there when he sailed past - go figure?! We climbed to the top of Indian head because occasionaly you can see tiger sharks, sting rays and turtles in the water below , i saw ....................ocean! Nice view and all that but a bit of a bloody trek for another look at the ocean! We left Indian head and went to visit the coloured sands which in short is some rocks where the Abo chicks used to hang out. After the coloured sand Terry decided it was time for a walk through the jungle , still emotionally scarred from the jungle trek in Thailand i gasped in horror! Turned out to be not too bad at all and only took about an hour - phew!
In the afternoon we returned to the mainland and to the friendly hostel for 1 more night before we had to get back on the greyhound - yuck!
Destination Maroochydore
Arrived in Maroochydore after a short coach ride (only 2 hours) and spent an hour walking around
looking for our hostel which turned out to be 5 minutes from where we had started from! Checked in and chiled out for the rest of the day ready for the most exciting day.......
Second day in Maroochydore and we were on our way to to Australia Zoo - Home of the crocodile hunter - i was soo excited , love Steve Irwin! Thought it might actually be quite sad but i it was really good with lots of pictures and info on Steve's work but no mention of his death. We saw the crocs, koalas, kangaroos, snakes, tigers and elephants. I had my picture taken with a koala and loaded up on crocodile hunter memorabilia - RIP STEVE.
Last day in Maroochydore and i had a lazy day, Kirsty however went shark diving! The girl seriously has NO adrenalin! We then left for Brisbane which brings you all up to speed, so far brisbane has included um, well , drinking! Leaving tomorrow for surfers paradise - we're on the home stretch of the east coast of Australia now which involves only beaches and Sydney, i'll be sure to send you all pictures so maybe you can feel the heat
from them - A ha!
Wade - Out
