Tonight was an all you can eat pizza night - this was a great way of getting to know the people we are due to spend the next 3 days with. From the window in our dorm we saw hundreds of birds flying overhead, when we went out for tea and relaxed in the hammock we found these were in fact bats! Amazing! 19/01/10 Today is the start of our Cool Dingo Tour of Fraser Island; we were picked up outside of our hostel and taken to the ferry terminal this is where we were greeted by our tour guide for the next 3 days Jayson. We got in the bus and headed for the timber lodges (very nice!). In total there are 39 people on tour with us - somehow a minor got through the ... read more

G'Day, Well, I have finally arrived in Australia, first stop Sydney last Thursday, just in time to escape the big freeze!! I had a brilliant flight with almost no jetlag. OMG Sydney is a beautiful city, although not so nice when it was freezing, wet and too windy to do the Bridge climb on Friday. I eventually completed my first challenge on a warmer day when I climbed the Harbour Bridge, unfortunately Marg was not allowed to accompany me on my first epic journey! The views from the 'summit' were awsome - (their speak not mine). I was really well looked after by Martine's family and especially her dad Bob, who became my unofficial and unpaid guide! Went by train to the Blue Mountains and got some walking in and encountered my first Aussie wildlife - ... read more

After jumping on the night bus from Airlie beach i caught up with the Irish girls,Norma, Fionnula and Cliona. Three cracking girls i met on mission beach and traveled with to Airlie. They went on the silent night a couple of days before me so had left Airlie before i finished. Met up with them on Saturday morning then straight on the boat out to Fraser. They had booked onto a guided tour on Fraser which sounded like a laugh and knowing them it would be! We arrived on Fraser early and jumped straight on the bus. The driver Peter was definitely a bit lively for this time in the morning. But we all soon caught up! first of all we went out to Lake Mckenzie basically just one big freshwater lake but the first ... read more

We’ve been very busy bees the last few weeks. Work has been going great for both of us and we’ve really settled into city living. We’ve moved apartment in the last few weeks. Found a lovely 2 bed apartment, just a couple of hundred yards away from our old place. It’s right on Hyde Park. We now have a gorgeous view of St. Mary’s Cathedral and Hyde Park, with Sydney Harbour in the background. We still have our gym and swimming pool in the building, so we’re still keeping our high living standards, nothing but the best for us! Haha We finally brought our camera for a trip around the city to the Queen Victoria Building (QVB), a lovely shopping centre where Lynsey gets the bus to work daily, and Town Hall. Next stop was Hyde ... read more

16/05/09 Saturday Day 274 Yet another day of driving Another 400k+ day clocked up. We did however stop off at the rum distillery in Bundaberg for a quick tour and we also got two free drinks which made the tour turn out to be good enough value! That was about it for today really. So now we’re here in Hervey Bay. We’ve a tour booked for tomorrow to visit Fraser Island. 17/05/09 Sunday Day 275 Fraser Island Checked out the town last night. It’s basically one massive long esplanade with shops and pubs dotted around in little groups, but none more than a few minutes walk. Went to Houlihans Irish bar. It was one or two pubs closest to us and the liveliest. The was a local band playing there. Not bad at all and there ... read more

Another flight, this time with Virgin Blue, to Brisbane, then a 4 hour bus journey in our 12 seater charabanc and we reach Hervey Bay. And guess what? Another 5 star place of luxury, staying at the Allegra Mercure apartments, estimated at being worth $1.2 million! How the hell are we gonna go back to slumming it I do not know! Hervey Bay is very picturesque, the beach was so tranquil and on the day we stopped there, there was no one on it. What a lovely place to live . . . and some of the Bloom clan also obviously thought so too as Gina's Aunty Pat, Uncle Emil and cousin Ann and husband Tim live in this very beautiful part of the world. It was lovely to have a family reunion and experience some ... read more

Hi all!! You'll be glad to hear we arrived back safely from Fraser Island i.e. not being bitten by a Death Adder or mauled by a Dingo! although we did encounter them both!! Met in the hostel bar for briefing at 7am and were split into groups of 9 or 10 - our group consisted of 2 french girls, a french guy, a swizz-italian couple and 2 english lads - definitely had the best of the bunch on offer! We had to prepare a shopping list and ALCOHOL list (believe me we were going to need it if we were camping for 2 nights and obviously we were in charge of this list!) and then once we had all the items packed in our 4 x 4 we drove to the rental place for more safety ... read more

There are vivid memories of sitting on top of Indian Head on the east coast of Fraser Island - the sun was shining, sharks were swimming in the sea below, dolphins were also swimming making a mockery that the two give each other a wide berth, the odd turtle floated on by - it was a Monday morning. What would we be doing on a dreary Monday back in the UK? It was one of those iconic moments when you know you made the right decision to head to the other side of the world with a backpack. We probably had the same thoughts on Whitehaven Beach at 6 o’clock one recent morning, but I was too busy playing beach cricket at the time to dwell on it. The same thoughts had not been on my ... read more
