December 9th Protestor Falls (Nightcap National Park) Rocky Dam Creek Minyon Falls Tyagarah What a storm last night - Lightning was only a km or two away! Torrential rain surrounding me and therefore no access to anything under my bed, including paper to document my thoughts… Pondering existence and existentialism in my van was tough. But I came through. Always slow to get moving the morning after though… Did I mention my invention of a camera that could capture smell? The warm green scent of a rainforest is something to be experienced…wish I could take it with me… and then a skinny dip in the falls had me renewed. This is giant goanna land! Potaroos potter around. I love to commune with the sacred beings like this. Mignon Falls. Wow. 50 metres from ... read more

Slept through alarm. Awake at 8.15. Late, argh. Throw arms in air and run around like a Muppet. Shower and dress. Drove up through Perth and the Tunnel. Went to old house in Cloverdale to show Richie. Shopping, it’s so cheap, at Belmont Forum. Richie got thongs and I got some t-shirts. Had lunch in the food hall. Went past my old schools and I don’t recognise them. Went up to Guildford and the Old Court House. Had a look around. Got dropped off at the airport. Checked in and went through security. Richie got quizzed by the security but all ok. Had a beer in the airport and then boarded plane. Sat on the right side of the plane and saw the city as we took off. Good flight had dinner just after takeoff. Once ... read more

In New South Wales we have a number of hiking trails, one of them is the Great North Walk from Sydney to Newcastle, it’s about 180 Kms and takes around a week to walk but there are not many facilities on the way so most walkers tackle a short section at a time. This walk passes within 400 metres of our home and we had a pleasant stroll along about 2-3 kilometres of the pathway. We would not usually walk in the bush at this time of the year; too many snakes, spiders and the danger of sudden bushfire. One day last week, we had had several days of very welcome heavy rain and the temperature had dropped to about 20C so we decided to risk it. Normally, avoiding December to February this is a very ... read more

After my recent trip out to find a job this side of the world I followed up a place on Darling Harbour called La Cita bar, and they have offered me a trial shift on Saturday night.... finally somone wants a good barman here!! Other than that I have been to the beach everyday, it was 40 degrees the other day, crazy was like a microwave the hottest day they have had this year, just to warm up your cold british bodies back home! My daily routine now consists of getting up at 10ish going down to the beach sitting in the sun for a while, then going for a jog up and down the shoreline, then in the sea for a swim, then back on the beach to catch some rays, then up to the ... read more

Kookaburra Sits on the TV Antenna Since we’ve been in Australia I’ve seen two Kookaburra. And they were quiet and very still. But in the past two days I’ve seen four and yesterday afternoon, right in the middle of town, we saw two more. Rather, I should say, we heard them. When a Kookaburra does its laughing thing it is an arresting sound. Both Abby and I froze and looked up and around. There, on top of the Video EZ’s TV antenna were two of them, each trying to out laugh the other. I’ve read that they sound like laughing donkeys, which aside from Balaam I’m not sure how we’d know what that might sound like. To me, it sounded like a troop of monkeys gone mad. It’s definitely a laughter sound - but it is ... read more

After finally deciding with Ollie to kick off our travels in Perth (Western Aus), we made plans on how to get there. Ollie flew out from Sydney to Adelaide to stay with relatives a few days ago so I decided it might be pretty cool to get the Sydeny to Perth train (4,400km) of it, a 3 1/2 day treck across the continent. After a little while the old train carriage, the uncomfy seats and the endless outback nothingness lost its appeal, and the general lack of ANY sleep left me feeling incredibly irritable and so i decided to cut short the trip and jump of at Adelaide, 28 hours after leaving Sydney. Although the journey was tedious met some pretty cool guys and gals on the train and spent some time playing poker and sharing ... read more

Hi Folks, Sorry about the delay in getting journals onto this site, the site was down for maintenance we think!! Never mind here we are and after two fantastic flights from Heathrow to Singapore and Singapore to Perth we arrived on time and frantically excited. The first flight seemed very quick, we had a good journey and sat next to an elderly lady Irene from Birmingham who was off to New Zealand visiting her daughter this is the 13th time she has done so and was quite a seasoned traveller on Singapore airlines. I saw 3 films on the flight, Wallace and Gromitt and the Were Rabbit, Sky High and Skeleton key all thoroughly good entertainment and kept me amused. Actually managed to get some sleep as well so that was good. Arrived in very steamy ... read more

Nimbin & Nightcap National Park Nerves. Clench. Anxiety. To begin all over again - does it ever get any easier? I remember this when in India - spending hours planning what to do and then hours looking for the perfect camping spot. All about feeling lost or conversely, feeling at home wherever I go. Something about me and country no through roads. My being must follow them to the end, just to see where they are no through to… Looking for tonight’s camping place, up to Mt Nardi and back, around the main street and around again. Outside a caravan park, it’s time to move on miss. Nowhere within the whole of Byron shire is it permissible to sleep in your vehicle over night. Of course we all do it anyway. Whilst I see the rationalisation ... read more
