After a big week at Uni Dan, Emily, Cole and I decided to jump in the car and head down the coast to Wollongong for a bit of a change of scenery! After a fair about of messing around in the surf...those waves were BIG and strong, we headed off to Nan Tian Temple for a change of pace! The Temple is the largest, most southernly Buddhist temple in the world and very impressive...well worth a look and a stroll around....just arrive with more than 30mins before the closing time! :) ... read more

Well, after 14 hours of travelling, we made it to Sydney. There were a few tears and tantrums from Dad, but Mom and G held it together. We quickly got to Wollongong and we've settled at Graduate House, into a comfortable two bedroom apartment. It even comes with pets! The first week was a flurry of new phones, shopping, visas, computer issues, school visits, busses, and pest control. We've been quick to catch up with old friends and Gabe has been busy making new ones. We're into our second week and things have settled considerably. Mom's at uni, Gabe's at school and me...? Well, I've bought a bike, been to the beach and am considering a job. Dreams do come true, Kids!... read more

After I was seriously sick the last couple of days I can now tell you what I did immediately before I got ill. Last Saturday I met Gavin and we had a few beers at his place and in the North Gong Bar. Unfortunately we were sitting outside and it was freezingly cold, as the wind coming from Antarctica was mercyless. This might be the central reason why I had a relapse after I was nearly fit again. Anyway, we talked about Europe and it's differences to Australia, and it was pretty funny, because he could tell me more about Europe as I could tell him. The next day we headed northwards through the suburbs of Wollongong, so that I could see the beauty of the Illawarra Escarpment for the first time. It's all forests and ... read more

Sometimes I ask myself what the hell I came to Australia for, when I look at the current wheather at home! At the same time I saw the first snowman that was built on Wollongong campus, ever. It wasn't taller than my knee, but, hey, it was the first one ever! As far as pople can remember, it never snowed in Wollongong until this Thursday. Although I would actually call it soft hail instead of snow, but at least you could built a snowman with it. This week the term of capoeira practice ended and we had a rhoda, celebrating. I met very nice people in this group and capoeira is maybe one of the best activities I do here. Afterwards, we went for a drink and had a good time together. I will definitely go ... read more

After my first glances into things here in Australia I can ask the question: What is actually different from the way things are done at home? Well, as you can imagine, there's less difference to expect than when you travel to an arabic country. Yet, it's the minor differences that are striking. It's usual here to buy milk that carrys the label 'no fat'!?, and for breakfast some people eat a substance they call vegiemite, which smells and tastes like dried beer :-r. Apropos beer, beerbottles have a lid you have to skrew to open and you can reclose it, if you like. Imagine me trying to open the first beer I had :-/ One of the first things I noticed were all the signs that tell you about things forbidden to do and everywhere you ... read more

It was this Wednesday night that I experienced what, as I was told, happens every Wednesday night in Wollongong. We went to town before it was even midnight and entered the first bar, getting a free drink just for entering. It was without taste or creativity and had nothing to entertain it's visitors; just a rectangular room with a bar. We left and entered the next one. Somehow, this one was quite similar. We had another few drinks and went to another club which was merely rectangular as well and had no decoration either. It played some elecronic music that didn't particularly fit my taste, but I was already challenged by all the drinks so it was all right with me. Of course we went to another one afterwards. I dont know, if I forgot one, ... read more

Hi there, It's one week now that I'm here and I still enjoy the warm welcome of my new friend Josh and his family. They're unimaginably hospitable to me and help me with everything! This made it really easy for me to get started with university and to find my way around down here in general. Lessons started this Monday and I enroled in two psychology classes and in one about contemporary Australian literature (of course). The campus is pretty amazing! Its all green with a lot of ponds and hundreds of birds living there - most of them I didn't even know from Discovery Channel. What is more, the campus appears to be an entertainment park. There are several restaurants and bars with billard and table-tennis tables, several lounges and, of course, a pool. Today ... read more

Hi there, I arrived in Wollongong last Wednesday and am hosted by a friendly guy who lives here. At the moment there's nothing but holidays for me as University lessons didn't start, yet. The environment is so amazing! Unfortunately, I don't have a camera, yet, but as soon as I bought one I'll provide you with fotos, I promise. Wollongong is situated 90 minuites south of Sydney, NSW, Australia and lies directly at the beach. As I learned, 'Wollongong' is an Aboriginal name and means 'between the hills and the shore'. It really is incredible how pleasant the nature is around here! The hills are covered with ever-green trees and the beaches with white sand. It's fantastic! But best is the weather: Since I arrived I didn't see one cloud. The Australians call the present status ... read more

Never quite thought I would be at a rehab centre, but we are back at Brett's aunt and uncles in Wollongong which has now been renamed the "Horsley Rehab Centre". After taking 2 days to do the coastal road up from Melbourne to Wollongong, and me not seeing awhole lot as my sore toe that I kicked the curb with in Melbourne, hasn't got any better, and I can only get out of the truck in extreme circumstances (i.e. bathroom pitstops, a place to sleep for the night, food). And even those were limited. Brett has never seen me not got out of the truck so little, and not ask him to pull over every 2 hours for a pit stop! Think he kind of liked it! Made for a quicker trip! The drive from Melbourne ... read more
