Heading for Wollongong, we were surprised as we drove past Lake George. The lake was full to the brim, the first time that we had seen that much water within it’s banks. The full lake was much larger than we imagined it could be. After settling in to Windang Beach Tourist Park, being a hot day, we headed for the beach to have a cool off swim. The beach was relatively calm, and the water was a good temperature. Windang lies south of Wollongong at the entrance to Lake Illawarra. The name Windang is aboriginal for "scene of a fight". With the weather the next day not being so inviting for a beach swim, we decided to tick the box of walking over the Sea Cliff Bridge. First we drove to Stanwell Tops lookout, and after ... read more

Sitting in the living room in Margaret's apartment drinking my coffee, I could hear the waves crashing on the rocks of the break water and watch them spraying into the air. I was waiting to watch the sun rise out of the ocean - just the opposite of our home in British Columbia where the sun sets into the ocean!! After the sun had risen Dwain and I took a walk along the beach path to join the other early morning walkers, joggers, bike riders and to watch the kayaks, rowboats, fishing boats and surfers and swimmers, all out at the crack of dawn. On Saturday Margaret took us for a drive around the town of Wollongong and out to the house where I grew up. I rang the doorbell and told the lady who answered ... read more

Our friends Joe and Carolyn picked us up at the house at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6 to drive us to the airport in Vancouver. It was a good thing we had given ourselves plenty of time because the traffic was backed up as a result of two different accidents on the number 1 freeway. However, we still arrived 3 hours ahead of departure time, so it was a breeze checking in. Our flight left Vancouver about 45 minutes late, but they were able to make up the time and landed in Auckland right on schedule. That was a L-O-N-G flight and we didn't get much sleep. After a 2 hour lay over in Auckland, we took off for Sydney in the dark and headed West. Arrived in Sydney right on schedule and were met ... read more

Too excited to sleep, didn't get a few things done last night due to last minute commitment to bloodline on stupid Netflix. Up at 5 and last minute sorting, cleaning. Off to get Kasey from a sleep over, hoping she is tired enough to sleep this afternoon so we can start working on UK time sooner rather than later. Hoping for weary tired not obnoxious tired! It's really like three trips in one this time as we all pretty much have very different plans once we get to the UK. Michelle freaked me out last night when she commented a few of her bloggers in the UK are rugged up, but after concern my second thought was PRIMARK!!! Always a UK highlight for us ( well Kasey and I). Long haul and no stop over, what ... read more

It's the day before and its hard to believe tomorrow it all begins! Our backpacks & Lonely Planet Guide packed, tickets, passports, medications organised, cameras & iPads charged and ready to go! This small group of 4 is made of 3 very experienced backpackers - Aleks, Noel and Beruta and then there me, (Francine) plus my travel buddy Private Roxy Koala, both novice compared to my travel companions. I feel very privileged to be going to Nepal, and have high hopes of bringing back some amazing photo's as memento's and maybe 1 or 2 trinkets. This trip promises to be filled with some amazing treks such as visits to - World Heritage Sites, Buddhist and Hindu temples, White Water Rafting, Over Night Camping, Cable Car Experience, Elephant Safari and much much more...... read more

We both decided to spend some time at the Science Centre in Wollongong, we enjoy this sort of thing. We live north of Sydney and Wollongong is way down south so to give us the most time to visit the centre we also had a couple of nights in a hotel in the area. It is a very long time since we visited the area, since a lot of motorways have been built saving at least a hundred traffic lights so the journey was quite pleasant. The centre is part of the University of Wollongong and is supported by many local businesses who have also provided some of the exhibits. There are over 100 interactive displays and most are suitable for children of all ages or adults like us who are approaching their second childhood, we ... read more

This has been a hectic week of cleaning, packing and goodbyes. But we finally made it on the bus last night to Wollongong to make our final farewells. We'd like to make a special thank you to all those who fed us, helped out and showered us in love and generosity in our last couple of weeks in Canberra. There's no way we could have coped without each and every one of you. Feel the love through the blog wires coming back at you. Coebbie and I fly to Santiago, Chile on Monday at 9.30am from Sydney. Thought I'd make sense of this blogging business before we fly out. Love love LOVE to you all, we're going to miss you like crazy! Or at least until we get there ;)... read more

For years and years, I found myself struggling with the future, not having any idea of what I wanted to do with my life. But soon enough, I figured out what it was that I wanted. I wanted to travel. That was my first ambition. I was tired of being told what I can and can't do. I went against the norms of society and went after what I wanted. I have to say that I'm glad I failed school. It gave me the perfect opportunity to experience something that I truly loved doing, which was travelling around the world on a tight budget and backpack, interacting with the many locals and travellers and seeing how I fit among them, which is an experience I can never be more grateful for. I found my share of ... read more

Call me sad, but I was kind of excited about coming to Wollongong. As it turns out, it’s not that flash! :-) It’s sprawling and industrial and there seems to be quite a lot of dodgyness. After looping through the town, we drove straight to City Beach where dozens of surfers were catching a wave after work. This area is also a serious boot camp location and there were people training and working out literally everywhere. It made me feel quite lazy for just walking around! After strolling along Marine Drive and around the town centre, we drove out to the university to find a place to park our van and be ready for our morning swim at the campus aquatic centre (ie free sleep and shower). Wollongong’s students are truly spoilt with the awesome recreation facilities ... read more
