This morning we travelled ten kilometres east on the Sturt Highway to Forest Hill to start today’s sightseeing at the RAAF Wagga Aviation Heritage Centre that is housed in the old Guard House at the entrance to the RAAF Base Wagga (even though, technically, it is at Forest Hill). Before heading into the guard house to view the smaller exhibits we wandered around the well-preserved aircraft outside. The heritage centre is home to an F-111, a Mirage, a Korean War Meteor and a Vietnam War Canberra. Also located outdoors is a memorial to the Empire Air Training Scheme which saw thousands of aircrew trained to contribute to the WWII war effort. More than 200 training bases were constructed throughout the Empire, with 27 in Australia and nine across the the Riverina and surrounding districts. Mural artist, ... read more

Finally … we were able to head off today on our long-planned road trip to NSW. Since our trip in 2019 we have been planning to head north again to explore more of what NSW has to offer. We were all set to go in mid-2021, just after Bernie retired, but then Victoria was locked down AGAIN and we had to stay at home instead. Then we planned to head north early last year, but there were once in a hundred year floods throughout NSW so we drove west to South Australia instead. Our patience has paid off and we now have the truck packed for our NSW adventure. Speaking of the truck (aka the ISUZU MU-X) Bernie is very keen to try out all of the modifications and accessories he has been organising for it. ... read more

Carried on through lots of cropping rice apparently and good looking farms ... huge and dry stock stations, thought of some good steak around for dinner ??? Lots of very old big train yards and stations, towns etc, a big drive today but really interesting and as always did not drive the Highway but the old roads. Got into Goulburn about 5.30pm and got sorted, had dinner in the restaurant .. Don Lamb Shank perhaps from around ... read more

Was off and running at 9:00 A.M. after a quick Petro stop and a Brekkie break ( Aussie’s term for Breakfast). While just as chilly as yesterday -there was no wind. I learned my lesson and dressed appropriately from the get go today! I made 185 miles on my first sitting, I’m gaining confidence in my ability to fuel up with in 50 miles of empty, so I’m not stopping as often as I did in the outback. Did 165 miles on the second sitting after fueling up and having a terrific lunch. I’ve found that Shell gas stations often have a good brekkie or lunch/diner restaurant tied to them. Refueled in Hay, NSW and had a bacon, egg, cheese burger with everything. Their everything includes Beets on the burger - wow another Winner Winner Chicken ... read more

Another nice day for a white wedding 5th September. I peeled my eyes open and as usual Andy brought me a cup of tea, I felt rough this morning, my cold had landed on my chest. I needed to get on top of this as I am doing photographs for the bride and groom today, I gave them a commitment and despite how I felt, it would all happen and besides we were looking forward to another country property wedding. Helen had already very kindly raided her medicine cabinet, I had every possible cold and flu remedy on hand, by the time I got out of bed I was feeling almost human again. I appeared in the kitchen to find Andy and Helen, Robert had already gone out to do sheep things, farm life never stops ... read more

The reason we came over to the East was for our friends wedding we attended in Tarcutta and now the wedding was all done and dusted, literally we had the freedom to catch up with all of our fiends and there was no way we were going to travel this far and not make it a great event. Obviously our first stop was the farm, (My Spiritual Home) I just love the isolation of the farm, though only 60 K’s from Wagga Wagga, its tranquil, beautiful and a haven for peace and quiet. When we arrived I was so delighted to see Helen and Robert again after nearly two years away, they both looked very well, the thing I love about Helen is her no drama, no fuss approach to everything, from a splinter to the ... read more

We headed off from the showgrounds around 9:30 am and continued along the road to Wagga. As we couldn't book into the motel until 2 pm we stopped in a rest stop to read, have lunch and even a nanna nap getting back on the road and arriving at the motel at just after 2 pm. GMan booked us in and then we discovered what the receptionist meant as being able to park in the back corner. A site reserved for maintenance vehicles in the elbow of a small L shaped parking area and a curve to be able to back into. Well between Graham behind the wheel and me giving instructions he managed to get it into the park with the minimum of fuss. We were chuffed. Up to the room and discovered it was ... read more

Moving on … slowly We left you in Balranald in the last entry and we have moved slowly East, still with no real plan. Using the Camps book, we liked the look of a place called Maude; mostly because the site we were looking at was described as being attached to the local pub. It offered showers and toilet facilities as part of the deal. As we approached the ‘town’ we made a last minute decision to look at the other free camp on the banks of the Murrumbidgee. As we entered the site we noted another camper already there and G noted that SHE was not wearing a lot (M says my hearing is failing, but the eyes are still able to pick up a scantily dressed maiden in the middle of the bush…). Geo: -35.1099, 147.371We left the Caravan Park at 10am, after breakfast and saw the Funeral Parlour, who were very helpful in giving us a plan of the cemetery and copied information from the Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society Inc. telling us to write a letter to them and see if they can find information for us, as to where Mary Jane O'Connor is buried. We then visited the Salvation Army Op Shop, buying a couple of tops, becoming the thing we do in each place we visit. Went for a drive around Wagga Wagga, big place with some beautiful old buildings. Had lunch in the shopping centre and came back to the park. Unfortunately everything worth seeing is closed on Monday's, Art Gallery with a collection of National Art Glass and the Museum of the ... read more

Geo: -35.1099, 147.371Left Wyalla at 9.45am, called into the Tamira Aviation Museum. They had the last flying Spitfire Jet in Australia, fully restored. The Temora Aviation Museum provides a tribute to the men and women who served here during World War 11 and displays for them, their families and future generations, the history of 10 EFTS together with Australia's most comprehensive collection of historical aircraft maintained in flying condition.Out side there was a competition on, between model jets, WOW!! could they move, a rich mans hobby, some costing as much as a house and others as much as a good car. If they crash the pieces are picked up, chucked and they build another, it was enthraling to watch. An hour later we were back on the track. We then arrived in Wagga Wagga at 1pm, beautiful ... read more
