Sitting here in my hostel, and I still feel a bit pished. Went out to a place last night that sell their beer in litre glasses, not good. I was with my mums friends, Jane and Steve, and what a bad influence they are. Ended up at another wee boozer with some Scottish people where I drank more and played pool, can't remember much after that though. Just up at Manly now, which is just north of Sydney, a half hour ferry ride away. Not a lot to do here, apart from catching some waves, meeting with some surfer chicks for a barbie, the usual. Not really, I just walk the length of my beach each day, watching the surfers in admiration. Sharing a room with two other British guys, which is good. I went out ... read more

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time in the wilderness. Our family, living only a short 40 minute drive away from some of Canada's most spectacular scenery (the Rockies), would take our little tent trailer and drag it behind the van into this camp site or another for a couple of nights. There are bits of memory now - the scent of pine, the sound of chipmunks in the trees, creaking tree trunks, crackling fire, soot smelling clothes, crisp night air, the soft squish of moss. My brother and I would hop immediately out of the car and head for the patches of grass and needles blanketed between the scattered poles of fir trees and spread out. Make homes in our mind. Wander. The aimless wandering is something that becomes increasingly difficult ... read more

It's funny, the way you move in and out of truths in life. And it's funny the impact perspective and timing can have on travel. At work the other day (Hugo's, a lovely little pizzeria and cocktail bar on the Wharf in Manly), while pouring Brut for an older couple from the UK, I had one pure moment of presence. They said something simple along the lines of "you really couldn't have chosen a more beautiful place to be" after inquiring about my accent (strangely most people guess that I am Irish or British, not Canadian...not even American...). I stopped, stood there, with setting sun beating down on the back of my neck, with the crowds of teenagers full of goon backflipping off the pier behind me, with the ocean spread out to my right, and ... read more

I WENT TO A LAND DOWN UNDA' I bet you were all hoping that you wouldn't be seeing any more e-mail updates from me in your inbox, right? Well, lucky for you THIS is my last entry....tear. It seems that since arriving in Sydney, Australia I have succumbed to the "no worries mate" attitude and completely lost all sense of time, direction and money hah...not to mention keeping in touch with you all (sorry pop pop!). No energy to write the play by play from these past two weeks so here are my highlights. First off, did you know there are two airports in Brisbane, Australia (this is the city where we were to catch our connecting flight from KL, Malaysia to Sydney). Well there are! And when booking flights from North Hollywood, CA the airline ... read more

After the Blue Mountains we headed from Manly. The beaches are fantastic here, with lots of surfer dudes walking round. We booked an apartment for two nights with Laura and Dean and spent some time on the beach and hanging out. Its a beautiful place - could easily live here, but don't worry i won't be.... read more

Blogging has now resumed normal service following Christmas and the New Year! Special guest Alison James-Hart aka Kirstin's Mum Leaving the cold winter of Japan behind us, making our way to the sunny skies of Oz, we donned our thongs (that's flip flop's or if you have two left feet, flop flops!) sun cream, sun glasses, we had arrived in Australia only to get wet feet, sun cream dripping in our eyes which we couldn't wipe through the glasses. We checked our tickets again and we were definitely in Australia, but where was the blue sky, the sun and the cold tinnies, instead greeted with the Great British summer without the the Kiss Me Quick hats!!! Okay, not that bad, but it was cloudy the day we arrived. So far the weather has been wet and ... read more

After an slighly later start after our late night we headed to Circular Quay Harbour to catch the ferry to Manly. This is a nice beach area only about 30 minutes away on the ferry. It is a popular location and was quite busy being holiday time. we had lunch on the beach and a paddle in a very choppy surf sea. In fact as we were leaving the life guards were clearing the sea of swimmers as the waves were so strong. We headed back to the city for Tea time. We then ventured out to the Sky Tower where we took the lift up to the observation deck. The view at night was great and we wer happy taking photos and enjoying the view when we noticed that the queue to go down was ... read more
