G'day!! We're now in Manly, just outside of Sydney, staying with a couple of friends of mine from university (Stu and Becky). Then we head down the other side of Sydney and stay with another couple we met while travelling. All in all accomodation costs have decreased a fair bit!! Australia Day (yesterday) was great, we went down and sat in Sydney Harbour and watched a band, some tall ships, the Harbour Bridge (which had rabbits underneath it) and the Opera House (from a distance) then had a beer in The Australian pub. Now we're both sat on the internet looking for accomodation/jobs/cars for Melbourne. If anyone has any ideas please let mw know! We should have a mobile phone contact number soon so we'll let you know in case you miss our dulcet tones. Have ... read more

Again, I write about what I did yesterday. I was feeling extraordinarily adventurous, so I took a train (gasp!) and then a ferry (double gasp!) and just for all the cynics: I DIDN'T GET LOST, not even once. My camera has just uploaded onto my memory stick, so I can add photos to the blog this time. Anyway, I took the ferry from Circular Quay which is one of the places I went to on Day 2, and went on a 40 minute trip to a place called Manly, which is still part of Sydney... I think? Anyway, they have a really nice beach there. I wandered along it for a bit, and was shocked and stunned by how attractive Australians are. Don't get me wrong, you still get fat ones and ugly ones, but in ... read more

G’day. We have now actually left Australia and I’m sat in a campervan on the South Island of New Zealand. We decided not to do a blog for Australia as essentially we spent our 7 months living and working there rather than travelling. After an expensive time in South America we landed in Oz with no cash to our name having overspent our budget! I’m going to write some of the highlights from our time in Australia rather than a long winded entry. The essential background - We lived - in Manly, Sydney. The nicer version of Bondi with an amazing surf beach, tons of cafes and a good vibe. Every weekend was a holiday!! Our housemates - to live in a place like Manly you’re looking to pay high for rent. Having decided that our ... read more

“You inexplicably know lots of awesome people even though you are repulsive yourself” -Michelle Young what WHAT indeed you ‘awesome people’. Everyone’s top 15 favourite polluter of the blogosphere is back with his long delayed and marginally anticipated 10th blog. Time for more gut wrenching tales of misadventure? Perhaps I have lost a limb, or I choked to death and curiously left this 10th blog with an attorney as my last will and testament. Wrong. The last 9 blogs have sucked you in for my first (and only?) blog about my successes here in OZ. Even I, the charmingly befuddled Virginian, have made a few right moves here in this backwards country. Success #1... Surfing: Many of you may be surprised to hear that I have actually improved considerably at such a cool and sexy recreational ... read more

So my life was going pretty well for a while, and therefore I did not update my blog during that time. I would have loved to, trust me; nothing would have made me happier. I began to write several blog entries, but they were all about my success, and happiness, two things I realize few if any of you care at all to hear about. Luckily, however, I had some inspiration when I returned to yet another night of work at the bar, and within the first hour slaving away there I felt a deluge of inspirational misery which ended my joyful writer’s block. Bartending 101: Rule #1... Always be dancing. You must dance for two reasons. The first being that it is the only way to maintain sanity: As I watch hundreds of different ... read more

I have come to realize that I have arguably the worst position possible at the bar (Henry Africa’s). I now understand that every day I come into work there, I am the most hated person in the bar. This is because I work behind the bar, I dress like a bartender, I help make a lot of drinks, I have soft welcoming Calabrese/Pippin fusion features, but I can not make your drink. Not only can I not make you a drink, but I can not even make eye contact with you. I am the hunchback of Henry Africa’s cursed to roam behind the bar looking down at the floor in shame at all times. When I make eye contact with anyone, they immediately get excited and lean over the bar to order a drink from ... read more

Remember when you were young and you would walk along a sidewalk and say that you couldn’t touch the cracks? Or in the fall you would say that the leaves were lava and you couldn’t touch the leaves? Essentially anything could be named lava and then you couldn’t touch it. The world was one big game of operation. Well... I have taken that game and changed it a little. My first modification was to make it REAL instead of a game. Secondly, instead of fictitious lava I have chicken wire, nails, and exposed electrical connections. You guessed it; I just had my first weekend as the Fight Gym handyman (job #3). As Chris put it, “James, it is just you and the boss fixing up the old fight gym... with swinging hammers and swinging dicks”. ... read more

The second hostel I stayed at featured multiple men who told me stories about the times they punched women. I’m not saying I condone this, I just think that fact helps convey the strangeness of all of the people I lived with here. Little did I know it, but my first night in this hostel I roomed with the highest concentration of women punchers. The pictures I’ve included are of this room, and the squalor it provided. This 4 man room featured a middle-aged Italian man named Valerio, a German amongst Germans named Hans, and the human giant German Lucas. Please let me share you some stories of these men so that you may better understand the character of man I roomed with. Valerio spoke very very little English, but one night as the two ... read more

Suck it nerds I’m getting paid! That’s right. You read it here first. Mr. James Calabrese, BS in Civil Engineering, is gainfully employed at the “Manly Fight Gym” AND “Henry Africa’s.” Did you see that ‘AND’ I included? That is because I have two jobs, thus necessitating the conjunction ‘and.’ If I recall correctly, when I dipped out of the US you all only had one job, and some even had zero. Even you dad, you only have one job. Look how your son has succeeded in the big wide world. Two jobs... I do the work of two men. Pretty impressive, I know. At the Fight Gym I have been entrusted with the all important duties of “receptionist.” I also have the pleasure of working weekends where I will be renovating the establishment with ... read more
