Also my phone has broken so can you email your numbers to leannewilby@hotmail.co.uk or you can tx on my oz number +61450084379
anyway, i last wrote when we were in melbourne and we are now in sydney and have been to tasmania in between. ill try and keep it brief.
MELBOURNE- is a lovely city which consists of the cbd (central business district) and there is a stretch along the Yara river. Seen as our hostel there was poo (and thats being polite!) we tried to get out of it as much as possible. while we were there they had a motor show going on which was nice to have a nosey round and we did a lot of stomping around the city. the nearest beach/seaside place is St Kilda so we hopped on a tram for a day in the sun. Melbournes weather is very unpredictable but on this day we were lucky. the beach there is
nice but always busy as it is the closest to the city.
melbourne is were they film "Neighbours" but being as we are not avid fans we decided not to do the ramsey street tour but to goto a night in a pub where a few of the stars are. what a laugh! I actually kissed Doctor carl Kennedy! jealous? the other 2 stars that were there we didnt recognise. we met up with some friends during our stay in melbourne and they introduced us to some really cool bars as well, 1 of which was on the rooftop of a very high building and at 8pm they show an open air movie. we also discovered another bar called the butterfly club. this place was amazing, it is a small theatre upstairs and a bar downstairs where you just feel like you are in somebodies house with hundreds of nick nacks everywhere.
TASMANIA- what an amazing place. We flew there and hired a camper van to get us a far round as we could in 4 and a half days. to start with we had a quick jolly around Hobart, the capital, nice but not worth too long
a visit. then we stayed at a site on the way up the west. the site was along a river with cliffs up each side and stunning views. the weather there was a lot colder then oz and very like the Uk. we continued the next day to drive up the west coast, it is very green due to the high amount of rain they get and it rained on us for 2 days.
the highest part of tassy is the cradle mountain national park. the mountain looks like a baby in a cradle, hence the name and it has beautiful lakes at either side. you can walk from 1 side to the other in 6 days! we gave that 1 a miss. we went to both sides of the lake but it was very cold and rainy.
as we started to drive towards the east coast the weather got better. you can split the island in half and 1 side rains and 1 side doesnt! very strange. we went to a place called the bay of fires which has just been voted the best place in the world to visit for 2009 and believe me it is
worth it. it was named this as the bloke who 1st came across this region sailed up and the bay looked like it was on fire from the aborigional burn offs. to walk down the whole stunning bay with crystal clear water and white sand would take you 5 days. so imagine the length of this un-spoilt coast line. we then stayed over at a place called Bicheno which is famous for its blow hole! the way the rocks are shaped, when the waves come crashing up it goes under the rocks and shoots out the top like a whales blow hole! we also visited a water fall near there which was lovely.
the highlight of tasmiania was visiting a wildlife park were we saw tasmanian devils(we'd given up trying to see them in their natural habitat) this place was a rescue centre and it had a lot of animals roaming around that you could feed. i fed a kangeroo while her joey had its head stuck out of her pouch. they were feeding the devils while we were there. they are great little things, nicks wants to smuggle 1 home! also we saw wombats and echindas which are
twilight beach
voted the best in oz in west oz like hedgehogs with long noses.
the last tourist site we went to was Port Arthur were prisoners were from Australia were sent for re-offending or bad behaviour. here, they were made to work on a saw mill. the site was amazing, like a big stately home next to a lake. we had to be at the airport at 5 am so it was still dark as we drove there. we saw more wallabies and possoms on that drive then we have seen in wildlife parks. no wonder there are so many squashed 1s at the side of the road cos they just jump out at you from dusk til dawn!so we loved tassy and if you ever get the chance to go give yourself about 2 weeks as it felt very rushed with a lot of driving.
SYDNEY- so after an early morning flight we made our way to my cousins house about 1 hour outside the city. after chilling there for a couple of days we headed to the city to meet my friend who moved from the uk last August. she showed all the sites - well the 1s which provided booze- then we crashed at
her house in manly. we have been here ever since. we went into the city again and did the tourist thing around sydney opera house and sydney harbour bridge and the rocks. its a stunning place. we ve been to Bondi beach which is lovely but again very busy cos its near the city. Manly is lovely and the beaches here are also great, we have tested them all!
so we are staying here for another 3 weeks or so while we decided where we are going next and how we are going to get there! we are thinking of buying a car or van and camping the rest of the way. i have driven so many vehicles through oz, nick navigates and i drive. we got lost in the middle of sydney city in my friends car with a sat nav! funny.
sorry if i have bored you with all that, will try and keep it short next time. keep the messages coming its lovely to here form you, if you cant work the blog just email me
love to you all
