After spending over a week in the city we thought we'd get amongst some nature. So off we went for a trip into the the great outdoors for some fresh air (Being in a 6 bed dorm can get a bit sifling). Our desination: the nearby Blue Mountains, every Sydneyers favourite daytrip. We went on a minibus which not only took us on the 2 hour journey to the Blue Mountains, but also included a quick visit to the Sydney Olympic Park and to Featherdale Animal Sanctuary. At the Olympic Park we got a view of the Telstra Sadium through the daytime, of course we'd already seen it at night to see England get mauled in the Rugby. You could also see the thing that held the Olympic flame during the games(The Olympic Flame Holder is ... read more

Day 19 (June 9) I went to the Blue Mountains today. It's supposed to be the "grand canyon of australia." It was rainy in the city when I left but the sun was coming through at times. I took the two-hour train from Central Station at 10am. It was cool to see the suburbs of Sydney from the train, and I took in a lot from the conversations of the local commuters. I arrived around noon and had a nice lunch. The canyon is only a mile or so from the train station, and you walk through a nice little town called Katoomba. I knew when I got there I was in trouble. It was still rainy and very foggy. I had read about the Mtns being covered in fog, and I had been hoping it ... read more

... read more

This morning was another early start, with our trip up to the Blue Mountains starting at 8am. This was Rob's first chance to see Australia outside of the city, and we got to see some amazing landscapes. We began with a short train journey down a bit of one of the mountains, along the worlds steepest railway! (if it was faster it would have basically been a rollercoaster), but we didn't really get to see much, and it was unbelievably misty, we probably couldn't see more than about 15-20 metres infront of us, but luckily for us, most of it had cleared up by early afternoon. The afternoon was spent visiting different points of the mountain range, where we got some pretty awesome photos, the aussies call this area the grand canyon, and its pretty obvious ... read more

Russell - Since the hot weather has gone away we thought it was about time we headed for some real cold weather with a trip to the Blue Mountains National Park. The park is about an hour and a half west of Sydney so another trip to the car hire place was in order. Sadly this time the fact that wedding is only 6 weeks away held no sway as the annoying woman behind the counter insisted that Lindsay had to be present to be included on the insurance. So after giving up the argument I drove Lins back to the shop. "Oh," said the woman, "it seems you details are already on the system." Yes, that's what I was trying to tell you - you crazy woman!!! ARGGHHHH - Never mind, we are on the ... read more

Ken and Alison were kind enough to take us on a trip to the Blue Mountains for two days. Only 2 hours from Sydney, this part of the Great Dividing Range took 25 years for Europeans to cross, not because the mountains are high but because this is true Aussie "bush" - extremely rugged and dense. Travelling in a 4WD bus (yes, that's right) we made our way out of the city. In the distance the mountains really do look blue. There is reason for this. Eucalyptus, or gum trees, emit an ultrafine oily vapour that hangs in the canopy giving it a blue tinge. Isn't that interesting? Our first stop was a small meadow tucked away from the human population where kangaroos come and eat and relax and socialise it seems. We could get really ... read more

Spent today at the Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens outside Sydney (it is the cool climate annexe to our Royal Botanic Gardens). Went to see some Autumn foliage and to swot up on a bit of South American flora prior to my departure next weekend. Particularly enjoyed the young Araucaria (Monkey Puzzle) tree and the Southern Beeches which have close and similar looking relatives here and in New Zealand. Photo is of Roble (Nothofagus obliqua).... read more

So a lot has happened...It feels like normal life here even though I’m kinda on a perma vacation which is nice and I know until I retire I wont feel like this so I’m lapping it up as much as I can :D Sydney I think has worn out its welcome with me. Its pretty much like Toronto and Im kinda not liking the big city anymore, which I never thought I would feel. Im actually looking forward to finding smaller towns :) I went to the Blue Mountains, which is about 2 hrs north out of Sydney. It was absolutely beautiful and freezing!! Well freezing to them you guys back home would have had shorts and T’s on but we had parkas on. The mountains are beautiful... they are blue because the eucalyptus ... read more

Satarvo Bianco is a very rare variety of wine only produced by a single winemaker in the foothills of the mountains west of the Hawkesbury. Our 2006 vintage is now in production, read on for the rivetting details ... Cleaning & Bargaining Saturday morning, Rob was up at 6am to prepare the equipment for our white wine making. With everything washed and steralised, he then set off to meet the truck coming from South Australia with our grapes. It was scheduled to arrive at 8am, but grape picking, the weather and long distance road transport logistics delayed the grapes arrival until midday. The truck driver looked happy to finally make it after 13 hours on the road. So, Rob and his father, Peter, met the truck and the entire Farillo family who are involved in the ... read more
