Today we used the drizzly weather conditions as an excuse to have some down time from our tourist activities. In the morning we hit the gym for a much-needed workout after our feast last night at Christine and Mariano's house. Mike spent some time preparing for his work duties tomorrow and Maureen went to the pool for some swimming and water aerobics. The afternoon was spent reading, doing Sudoku puzzles and watching foreign movies. In the evening we had dinner with Mike's colleagues--Peter, Rachel, Michelle, Eleanora and Michael--at a lovely restaurant called Water's Edge on Lake Burley Griffin. We've eaten more in the last two days than we have all week! ... read more

Another perfect day in Australia! Although the skies were cloudy we enjoyed viewing Canberra from the heights of first Mount Ainsley and then Black Mountain Tower. Canberra is beautifully laid out and the panoramic views revealed how it utilizes the land and water features of the area in its design. Then on the the Australian National Botanical Gardens where we wandered on well-groomed pathways and marveled at the variety of plants, trees and landscapes. After a bite of lunch at the Gardens we drove to the Canberra Glassworks where we watched the artisans at their craft. They have a popular program where people pay to participate in a learning course where they are able to make their own piece. There is a viewing gallery above the "Hot Room" and we were able to listen and learn ... read more

Today we bid farewell to Sydney and to our delightful and gracious hosts at the Waldorf South Apartments, Pam and John. We decided to take the longer southern route along the coast before heading inland to Canberra in anticipation of having a more scenic drive. There wasn't much along the road we wanted to stop and explore, but we did see the landscape change from city, to suburb, to eucalyptus-studded craggy hills, to hidden beaches, to ranchland, to large green valleys and back to city again. Maureen finally got the nerve to try her hand at driving today and managed to arrive in Canberra without event. We were tired from the 6 hour trip but found the waveless pool and the jacuzzi at the apartment to be rejuvenating. Then out to a Japanese restaurant for dinner--a ... read more

7-10 November 2010 We are now in Canberra and only planned on 2 or 3 nights here but decided to stay extra as there is so much to see here. We arrived after a clear day and got to set the tent up in sunshine which was a nice change. We are staying at the Exhibition Park in Canberra (of all places - very ironic!!) which is adjoining the showground which makes for some interesting background noise (dog shows, horse competitions, etc). Reef thinks it's great we've "arranged" all these exotic animals entirely for his pleasure!..... Our first full day here we went to the National Museum of Australia which was a real eye opener and set out so well. We were lucky enough to visit when the exhibition for The Canning Stock Route was on ... read more

Blog Day 732 It was Sunday morning and Caroline was due home today, her flight was coming into Canberra at 09.30 and I was looking forward to seeing her. In reality it has been just over two days that I have spent with Caroline since the 9th of August when I went off to Christmas Island, then Weipa, then came back and Caroline had already left for the UK. Strangely enough, when I was flying back in to Sydney, Caroline was flying out on her transatlantic flight back to the UK. In our 20 years of Marriage, I guess if you roll them up we have probably spent at least five years apart, which I don’t think is a bad thing. Anyway, Caroline, Airport, Focus. Ah yes, I have been using Caroline’s desk whilst she has ... read more

Blog day 724 Hi there, as you had seen we had had a guest writer for the last blog when I went to Woodstock, the weekend before last and as usual had a fantastic time but surely, you have all read that in the last blog. (I do hope so) It was back to work on the Monday and it was busy as usual, Caroline had arrived safely in the UK and she had survived her girly surprise weekend and I believe went swimmingly well so I was happy she was safe and sound. We will not do the entire work thing, but I go to Tuesday and found out late Tuesday afternoon that I was needed at the North Sydney office on Wednesday, so had to get my flight arrangement made for my trip up ... read more

Hi All, Thought it was about time we reported in. Not that we have much to tell except for storms, wind, rain, midgees and the odd fish. It seems whenever we are up here the weather is just not quite right for catching Barra. We spent a week at Baffle Creek and then a few days at a place called Maira, which is about 45 minutes north of Bundaberg and a lot of that time was spent waiting for winds to drop or rain to stop. I did manage to catch a grunter at Baffle Creek. Today we returned from a week at Lake Monduran and the Barra were not biting(surprise, surprise). There were heaps of people there and no-one was reporting a catch as the water temp was too low. I did, however, manage to ... read more

Blog Day 716 I got home on Friday from Christmas Island, Caroline collected me from the airport in the Patrol, drove us to the office, where we will now both be based, go out, I got in and drove home, as I had travelled through the night and just wanted to go to bed and I fealt I had earned the right to do so. I had planned to pick her up at the end of the day and before she got out of the truck I asked her if she would be able to sort my Blackberry out as I had not switched it off at all whilst on C.I and as I had to when I got on the plane, when I came to switch it back on, it asked for a code I ... read more
