Back in Darwin we decided to check out some of the local attractions. First up we went to Casuarina Beach to get some sunset pictures and it is such a beautiful beach that I could easily spend a lazy afternoon there ( particularly at sunset with a glass of champagne). Crocodylus Park was next and it was very interesting to read and hear a little more about these amazing creatures. I even braved enough to hold a baby croc for a photo, their skin is so soft that I can understand why they bring such big dollars for handbags etc. Not my thing but it is beautiful leather. They have a fish feeding area down on the harbour edge and it is amazing how many fish come in on the high tide to be fed. There ... read more

After a few days in Darwin we flew to Gove to visit Ann and Bernie. It was great to catch up with them and as usual the hospitality was turned up to the max. They had managed to swap their ute for a mates Land Cruiser so that we could all explore the sights of Gove. Gove is solely a bauxite mining town (and also a life support system for the indigeneous population). In fact Rio Tinto just signed a new deal with the traditional land owners to the tune of $700 million, nice addition to your other benefits. There is a lot of red dust but also a lot of colour in the rocks and cliff faces around the coastline. We feasted on mud crab washed down with a few bubbles and John learnt how ... read more

On our way again This is the year of the big cruise. We are joining the Dawn Princess in Dubai, and cruising around the Mediterranean, then up to le Havre, ending the cruise in Dover. We are going to be a little on tenterhooks today with the Chilean ash cloud disrupting domestic flights to Melbourne. While currently all appears okay, we will need to decide whether to risk a flight to Melbourne, or find another way there. Aside from that, we are about as prepared as we are going to be, and just need pack the dinner suit and a few other odds and ends to be ready to go. ... read more

Well I am nearly caught up with our blogging. Before leaving Alice we decided to have a quick look at the East MacDonnell ranges and see some Rock Art. I guess by now you are all getting tired of rock pictures but they are so colourful and all just that little bit different. After this our next stop was the Devils Marbles with a plan to stay overnight, but as we got there around midday we had plenty of time for lunch, a good look around and plenty of pictures so we decided to keep on driving. We had decided that we wouldn't spend much time doing the touristy thing (Johns words) from here on as we would be coming back on this road on the way back down and turning off for Qld at Tennant ... read more

1 Day to go Tomorrow at 10:25am I am scheduled to fly from Sydney to Vancouver. It's finally happening. After months of planning and saving I am almost there. My bag is packed, all 20kgs of it. I haven't really got much else to say. All I know is that right now I'm think about all the things I am going to miss here in Canberra which is sort of a suprise. My family, friends, hockey, work (gasp!) and just Canberra in general. I never thought I'd miss Canberra but it is pretty cool here. Also, I'm pretty happy. The Vancouver Canucks made it to the finals and I will be there to cheer them on! 2 wins away from the Holy Grail of Hockey, the Stanley Cup. Vancouver have been in the NHL for 40 ... read more

It was 4.00 am, Friday 27th May, the alarm had just gone off. I have a day off work booked and Caroline was still recovering from her appendicitis, she is recovering well but is still not quite there. We have a long weekend planned down in Kangaroo valley as our friend Bec and her fiancé Murray get married this weekend, but before all of that we had to drive down to Bega to collect, the first stage of the box for the truck which is now ready, after toiling long and hard with my tape and pen, drawing up what we considered would be suitable for our needs. Caroline made a slow appearance from the bed room, early mornings are not her best time, and I have to hide anything that is sharp. It was not ... read more

Well we have finally arrived in Darwin after what seems like an eternity and are staying with Dennis and Edmund for a while. It is great to see them both as it has been a long time (probably 10 years) since we have seen Edmund. However as I am still trying to play catch up with the blog this entry is about Alice. We arrived on Sunday afternoon and were lucky to get a spot in one of the caravan parks for 8 nights. There are hundreds of nomads heading to the top end and they all pull into the caravan parks and sit and wait until someone pulls out so they can set up. It was good to get the camper off the truck for a while and catch up with washing cleaning etc. John ... read more

We left Ayers rock and headed to Kings Canyon which is about 150kms from the rock. The canyon was amazing and I guess would have been more spectacular from the rim but I wasn't up for the steep climb so we settled for the walk along the canyon floor. The ghost gums against the backdrop of red rock were outstanding and the colours in the rocks were amazing. We originally intended to then follow the loop road back into Alice so we didn't have to drive the distance back to the highway but were told that it was very rough and very dusty. Since we hadn't done any dustproofing for this trip we ended up going back to the highway and stayed overnight in a free camp on the Finke river. Amazingly we met a couple ... read more

After leaving Coober Pedy we headed to the Rock with an overnight stop on the border of SA and NT. Near the overnight stop there were large flocks of budgies which looked stunning in flight with flashing green and yellow colour. We fuelled up halfway along the Lasseter Hway into the Rock thinking that fuel would be much more expensive at Uluru only to find that it was 40 cents a litre cheaper at the Rock, Go Figure. Oh well you live and learn. The resort was a pleasant surprise, prices were reasonable, the camping area was huge AND we finally got to shed a layer or two of clothing which was an absolute bonus. We decided to drive straight to the Olgas and stay for the sunset pictures and do Uluru the next day. The ... read more

After leaving Broken Hill we headed for Coober Pedy via Pt Augusta and hoped that after the cold of Broken Hill the weather would be a little warmer. It was nice to finally leave the plains and enter the Flinders Ranges, but that didn't last too long before we were back out onto the plains at Port Augusta. We didn't stay to look around but continued on for an overnight stay at Pimba, which is also a large roadhouse catering for all through traffic, but also the main fuel supply for Woomera. We were amazed at the number of people camped in the free camp at Pimba, and almost drove past it as we thought it was a caravan shop at first because of the large number of caravans in there. Woomera was about 25kms from ... read more
