How nationalistic are we? It's Canada Day and we're running around buying luggage, power adaptors and enough cat litter for kitty to sniff, scratch and scrape for a month while we bust loose out of our country of pride for greener pastures (or at least vineyards). In eights days we will embark on what we hope to be a trip of a lifetime. A second ago it seemed like the adventure was 6 mths away yet now it's right around the corner. Guess I better book that rental car so we can enjoy memorable moments like driving through Provence. I picture myself hopelessly trying to play navigator while John patiently copes with French locals riding our rear and flashing their lights at our inability to travel over 200kms/hr through the florishing lavender fields. Oh what awaits ... read more

Long Beach, July 1, 2005 Hello everyone, Roberta here. Happy Canada Day Yesterday we spent a glorious day at a part of Long Beach where we can park the van just 20 or 25 feet from the beach. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner in our van, facing the beach. We walked along the beach, the sun was in and out from behind the clouds. Katherine flew her kite. We sat outside and read intermittently while watching the waves roll in and out. It was a perfect day. Today we are in the same area, and had breakfast here, but it is raining off and on. I’m so glad we took full advantage of yesterday’s sunshine. There are several Canada Day celebrations starting in an hour or two. We plan to go to one of them. ... read more

I found myself staring at nothing but a light blue sky while laying on a floating boat ramp on Lake Crescent, listening to Ike hit the water with a stick. That was it. Nothing to contemplate. No questions about life and existence. Just that moment. That was at the end of the day that started at 3am with the intention to hike for many miles… Breakfast was at Port Angeles after attempting to eat at two different small diners that were just too weird for us to stay at. It was also after going through an abandoned house on the side of Highway 101. We started the hike after going through two more abandoned houses that were built identically right next to each other. Lunch was at the campsite of the Hot Springs (not close to ... read more

As the title suggests, this will be a more detailed log then either previous updates, and thats because I'm on my own again, and have a 4 hour pass (By accident :s) to use on this machine in one go, but I won't be staying that long! After my last update, we went straight to see war Of The Worlds. In my opinion, it could be the greatest movie this year! It was that amazing. I don't know if its out there yet, or even soon, but I recommend it highly to everybody to see it straight away. If the premise sounds even a little interesting, and you like to be on the edge when watching a movie, the majority of this film will please you to no end. However, besides the film itself, the theatres ... read more

Today I'd like to talk about some of my classes in a little more detail. So far I have had 2 classes in my independent production course and 1 class in my Cinematography course. My indie production course is great because the professor is a seasoned director and producer of several independent features and he's loaded with useful tips on how to cheat the system and work your way into Hollywood. His name is Jeffery Obrow and if you look him up on IMDB.com you can see some of the movies he's made. Now granted this man is not what you might call an artistic genius. His films thus far have mostly been campy horror/thriller flicks of the B genre, but what is inspiring about him is that even though his films have never really pushed ... read more

No luck of the Irish after the first day. Our first flight from KC to Washington D.C. was delayed by two hours. So my travel buddy, Sean, and I spent some quality time at the Kansas City airport. Time was moving fast after a couple phone calls and a cup of coffee at KC's Home Turf (buscuits and gravy for Sean). Sean was quick to point out a United Airlines employee with the worst wig I've ever seen. Ahh... the joy of owning a digital camera. Enjoy! So after we meet up with Dan, the third member of our traveling crew, we were off. The three of us arrived in D.C. Reagan around 12:30 PM EST for what we thought would be painless connection... arrive at gate 43 and depart at gate 45. Seems easy… right? ... read more

Hello! I wanted to let you all know that I arrived home safe and sound last night. The weather was a rude awakening compared to what I've been used to overseas -- it's so hot and humid here! Ugh! Anyway, it was a relief to see the cornfields of Indiana again. I think six weeks really was the perfect length of time to be gone. It was long enough to really feel like I was experiencing Europe, but I was just starting to miss the comforts of home as well. Yes, we Americans are definitely spoiled. I have new appreciation for AC, my own washer and dryer, bugless apartments, my car, and my closet!! No more living out of a suitcase and hauling everything I own around on my back. Yeah!! Anyway, the U2 concert was ... read more

There were plenty of things cooking in Washington DC last week including yours truly. Our nation's capital is infamous for its summertime heat and humidity. I, along with the locals and out-of-town tourists, was overcooked, almost burned in the soaring outside temps. Food: That was a big part of what last week (June 23-27) in DC was all about. The 39TH annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival was taking place on the National Mall. Sheltered under giant canvas tents from DC’s sweltering late June heat , Food Culture USA gave center stage to famous chefs, everyday cooks, farmers, and food lovers in general, all of whom, shared their knowledge about food. An Edible Schoolyard display was set up with The Capitol Building as a backdrop; beans (frijoles), corn, tomatoes, herbs, cukes, sunflowers, kale, lettuce, nasturtiums and much more ... read more

The fuller version... Wednesday 29th June - Long haul to Los Mochis Another slow morning, making the most of the hostel before catching the early afternoon bus to Los Mochis. A long journey, initially a few hours through sparsely-populated scrub to Durango just before nightfall. We were going to stay in Durango to visit the Wild West film sets but they are only open at weekends. After Durango the night falls and the road gets wilder and wilder. It is difficult to sleep with the winding nature of the mountain roads across the Sierra Madre Occidentale to Mazatlan on the coast. Shame we did not see any of it. Thursday 30th June - Mochis to El Fuerte We arrive in Los Mochis at something like 08:30, we had expected to arrive at 0600 but the buses ... read more

Wow, has it really been ALMOST TWO WEEKS since my last blog???? So much has happened since the last time I wrote. We have been so busy with work and sightseeing that I literally haven't had time to sit and write. We are currently in Las Vegas and I have about an hour....so I will write as much as I can. After we checked out of the Hampton Inn hotel in Glenwood Springs, Colorado we decided to go to Aspen for lunch. Aspen is only 40 minutes north of Glenwood so it would've been a shame to miss it. The ride to Aspen was beautiful! Our first stop was at Snowmass Village which is geared more toward families. This alpine village was adorable and all I imagined it to be. We felt like we were in ... read more
