It all started out with lists and lists of things to do. - Find a job (there's enough involved just in that!) - Research! Research! Research! Once I dedided on China, there were more lists. - Appointments - Immunizations (Hep A, Oral Typhoid, etc.) - Get the anti-malarial drugs - Quit the bakery - Buy all of the shit I need (and that's a lot.) - Apply for Chinese Z Visa. - Book a ticket - Heath Insurance - Millions of other errands. For those of you who know me, you'll know how often I re-wrote and re-thought those lists. I still am. So, for the moment.. all of the appointments are taken care of, I have all of the meds I need (Aka Cloroquine), I've given my notice at work (last day is Saturday!), I've ... read more

When we last wrote, we were ahead of schedule and had only 600 miles to ride to the Virginia coastline. After the Appalachians were going to be home free. We had only one more state ahead of us and a reasonable riding schedule planned…Suddenly the Atlantic felt just too close for comfort- the reality of finishing the trip and acting like adults loomed. So, we balked. Instead, we blazed a quick trail south following the tracks of Daniel Boone through the Cumberland Gap and crossing Tennessee in one day. The Great Smoky Mountains After a 100-mile day of riding, we arrived in Gatlinburg, TN at 10pm on a Tuesday night, expecting a sleepy-town nestled at the foot of the mountains where we could lay our bikes and our heads. Instead, what we got was a theme ... read more

Texas. Generally the end of the line for us all, really. ...they have taken over.... just kidding. sort of. Had a great time with my best friend and her husband, Kit and Leslie Tomlinson. It was one of the times I felt most relaxed on the trip. Kit and Leslie have been one of the main reference points of existence at seminary the last two years. I'm very grateful for that, it would maybe have been a totally different experience without them--in fact, I might have left. They left to move to TX and help pastor a church (Les- associate, Kit- Youth Pastor) there now, very sad. It was great to see though that there really is life after seminary! They have a grown-up house, and grown-up offices and everything. Plus, the cool new cell phone ... read more

Only three days 'til we leave! Seems like we should be frantic by now but since I'm attempting to keep my personal belonging to around 25lbs, it's more about editing. -Quick dry light weight clothes -2 pairs of shoes, including the ones I'm wearing Voila! Portrait: Yes, that's a "fridge" I'm posed with along w/my carry-on! I was inspired by the comedian/author Tony Hawks' book "Round Ireland With A Fridge." No one has wagged a bet with me, but like Hawks, I'm carrying an "odd load" which will surely be a source of many adventures! ... read more

PAT: Ok, it's clear to me that we won't be keeping this as up to date as I once thought. I had hope to compose entries that were witty, poignant, and informative, but that takes too long. For now, you get the Reader's Digest condensed versions so I can get some pix posted. July 4th - Waterfalls & Fireworks. Today we traveled with my sister and her family along the Columbia River gorge. Unwittingly, we also became part of a 4th of July parade. I forget the names of the towns, but after our first route to see many of the waterfalls along the Columbia River was blocked, we went a different way. Soon there was a big backup. Eventually we figured out that a parade had just gone through and we were right behind it. ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls July 4th 2005

Day 2! We spent the morning and afternoon looking at the falls and enjoying the warm sunny day. We took a tour of the tunnels behind the falls and got a close up of Horseshoe Falls. Even though they gave us raincoats we still came out soaking wet. Then we hitched a ride on the maid of the Mist and got even closer. At one point it felt like a torrent of rain was coming down on us. It was definitely an experience to be had! Afterwards we went to the train station where we found out that trains are always late. Our next destination was Toronto. We panicked as soon as we saw our two-person hostel room. We went from a $250 a night room to a $60 for 4 days nightmare! We really panicked ... read more

I just got turned on to "blogs" the other day. I've been active in online communities since the beginning, and before the common use of the Internet when BBS's were used. I guess I just couldn't figure out what the big deal was and how it really differed that much from personal webpages and forums. But now I think I get it. I recently went on a motorcycle odyssey in Mexico after not riding for over 10 years. And, I documented the journey via forum posts, emails, photos, etc. So, I decided to recreated all of that in one place... this new blog. But to preserve the nature of my original updates, I'm going to only post the various entries chronologically as they were orginally presented. Hope you enjoy.
