Just minutes from our home in Cool, in the heart of the gold country, the Auburn State Recreation Area (Auburn SRA) covers over 35,000 acres along 40-miles of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Once teeming with thousands of gold miners, the area is now a natural area offering a wide variety of recreation opportunities to over 500,000 visitors a year. Major recreational uses include hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, camping, mountain biking, gold panning, equestrian riding trails and off-highway motorcycle riding. Whitewater recreation is also very popular on both forks of the river. Auburn SRA is made up of the lands set aside for the Auburn Dam. California State Parks administers the area under a contract with the US Bureau of Reclamation. ... read more

The absence of my blog yesterday was due to one single main event that may not have even registered in your head. I'm not calling my readers idiots though, I'm merely explaining that the event is not important outside of America. If you look at the date, you'll understand. Independence Day! A public holiday splattered with festivities and parades and fireworks, a truly momentous day in the American calendar. So, now you know why I haven't added anything, would you like to see what I did both today and the day before? Sure you would. After my internet café trip yesterday, me and Sandy decided it would be best to head back to the hostel, and just wait out the rest of the night until we were ready to sleep and meet up in the morning. ... read more

It was really wonderful to come home just in time for glorious afternoon weather, a perfect welcome, and fireworks on TV! Here's a quick wrap-up of my impressions of travel in Europe. Great stuff in Germany, et al.: * German toilets (use less water and flush better). * Public pay toilets (almost always worth the price). * Euro-style windows (and doors). * Cathedrals. * Sparkling mineral water. * Eisbecher!! * Eierlikör (an essential ingredient in my favorite Eisbechern). * Trains, trams and buses. * Sidewalk bike paths. * Beer gardens. * Their laid-back and healthy attitude about alcohol. * Drea and her friends and family, of course! Stuff I missed about the USA: * Free refills. * Table napkins. * Really cold drinks. Hell, even the ice cream in Germany is lukewarm. * Having "Y", "Z", ... read more

La vida in retirement-ville July 4, we arose an at obscenely early hour to bid farewell to Pacific Rim National Park - went to Long Beach and watched it rain for 15 minutes, basically, as the tide began to come back in, then took off for Parksville. Leaving early enabled us to avoid heavy traffic during the snakey bits of Highway 4, always a clever tactic. We arrived in Coombs in time to enjoy second breakfast (as Frodo would say) at Goats on the Roof - delicious chorizo quiche for Kath and teriyaki pork chops for Roberta. Then we went to hang out at the Parksville Beach (where the tide was way out) for an hour or so (Roberta walked the beach, Kath napped) before heading for Maureen and Marcel’s place. And what a place it ... read more

We stopped this morning at the Great Lakes for breakfast and to organize the bus before we get off in New York. We were on Lake Erie on the Ohio shore. The water was actually quite warm. Of course it was nice to get in the water after three days without a shower. We then loaded up the bus and started the trip over to Niagra Falls. We arrived in about 8:00 pm. Unfortunately the Maid of the Mist Tour was closed but the Cave of the Winds Tour was still open. We took the elevator down the side of the mountain and ended up near the Bridleveil Falls. I had to call my Mom because the last time we were there my Mom got lost under the falls and grabbed onto a man that wasn't ... read more

PAT: We're actually back from our trip now but I'm determined to finish this. I thought Katie would write more than she has but she seems to have lost interest. If you want to hear more from her, email her and tell her how much you've enjoyed her posts and that you hope she writes more. Today we went to Mount St. Helens. While I wanted to go there, I was not prepared for what I saw. You can't begin to comprehend the massive scale of devastation until you see it first hand. Even 25 years after the blast, the massive destruction is very evident. Ragged tree stumps, blown down logs, and barren mud field below the summit still stand as testament to earth's awesome power. Out to about 8 miles, the blast travels at 670 ... read more

After returning to Tucson, I was ready to leave the US and go all the way down the pacific coast of Mexico. I was glad upon arriving at the bus station, as the greyhound buses were all full and the one for Mexico was almost empty, with much more leg room and comfort. It was really astonishing that the bus service was so much better than the American service, but there was one slight hitch. When arriving the Mexico border, I was required to pay for my visa but unfortunately I did not have enough cash on me to complete the transaction. They told me I had to go back to the US side and get money out of a cash machine which I did as quickly as I could and would not have been ... read more

More beaches We drove to north this time to see other beaches. We ate some good food at Mediterranean restaurant. The first beach we hit was Hapuna Beach. Its a very beautiful, full of really soft sandy like valvet. I absolutely loved it. Then we went to Spencer Beach. I bought Rahul a music instrument for his birthday, so we tried playing that on the beach. This was much more quieter and also had a camping place. If we knew, we probably would have camped there, right on the beach. On the way back, we also caught a really nice sunset. Last day - more snorkeling Today was Rahul's birthday and our last day on Hawaii. I could not believe the trip was getting over, it was such a perfect trip. We spent the morning packing ... read more

Day 3 After a sweltering night at the hostel we decided to head on over to Casa Loma. It’s a great place to go. Lots of rooms and antiques and its great fun to just walk around and pretend you could actually live there (Hmmm this would TOTALLY be my cat relaxation room!) The grounds were just as impressive. Toronto is a nice city to vacation in. Already I am starting to get a feel for the subway but the food still hasn't arrived. I keep thinking I will find Canadian cuisine but I don't think it exists! So far the slices of pizza and the sandwich wraps are what has kept us going. Later that day we headed to the CN Tower in downtown Toronto. It is TALL! It easily dominates the skyline and after ... read more

Well, we made it! Our incredibly drawn-out and uncomfortable plane ride featured several transfers and an unpleasant ordeal in Hawaii - where U.S. Customs made us get out of the plane in the middle of the night, collect all our baggage, jump through innumerable hoops of bureaucracy, fill out reams of paperwork, have our bags searched (and swabbed for explosives!!) and wait around for several hours before we could get back on the plane again. This is despite the fact we were neither stopping over in Hawaii or going to the US! Our plane was simply refuelling on its way to Vancouver. They have really lost the plot. Anyway, finally we arrived in Vancouver airport, where we were met by my parents. Of course, they didn't recognise me at first because my hair is still red ... read more
