We left Sedona and headed out for Meteor Crater which really is (as Ryan put it) a big hole in the ground... Then off to the painted desert. We had wind and the threat of rain so, perhaps, this is why the painted desert didn't seem so painted. We've enclosed a picture. Better, however, was the petrified wood which looked more like candles but was actually wood that had absorbed minerals many thousands of years ago. Bobby and Dave couldn't understand why there were no trees in a forest, good point. We spent the night in a glorious one-horse town called Holbrook. We spent the night sleeping in cement wigwams. Bob's comment on approaching our glorious accomodations "are we staying here? No friggin' way!!!"... read more

Saturday, July 23, 2005 Someone by the name of Mike Wiseman sat upright on a short stool. He was scratching the surface of a drum with his wooden sticks. He was waiting for the pianist , Kenny Werner, to bow his neck before the song moved from a waltz to a ballad -- and before the music dropped a half-tone on the scale. Meanwhile, the third player in the trio receded into the shadows of the stage, along with the barely audible sound of his bass. His name has already faded from memory. I was at the last, live performance of the Atlantic Jazz festival. The pamphlet described Werner as one of America's "Master Jazz Composers." Ten years ago, he apparently stopped recording his famous trios. Instead, he concentrated his energies on the tour-circuits, because he ... read more

I developed my photos in Kingston. You can find a small gallery (five pictures) by clicking here. All photos are from my stay in Halifax. You might need to hit your back button to return to my journal entry. After spending a week in the city, I have stories to tell. Friday, July 22, 2005. I arrived exhausted in Halifax. My trip from Montreal would mark the 3rd night and 4th day of continuous train travel. The "Ocean Train" -- the name of the Atlantic service -- was chock-full of passengers heading for the east coast. Once everyone was aboard and settled, I could not find a single, vacant seat in my train car. I sat next to the francophone family from Winnipeg (I mentioned them in a previous entry). They encouraged me to converse with ... read more

We arrived on a 10 and a half hour overnight train (it was very cold!) in Memphis, collected our car, White Dodge Neon. Then we drove 367miles to a little place many of you will know called Lynchburg, this took us 5 and a half hours through hot, slightly lost and very winding lanes. We arrived at a lovely, quaint B&B, see photos. The following day we visited the Jack Daniel's distillery, the drive was worth the lovely smells alone! The tour was reallly interesting, although Guy would have prefered it if we could have done a little sipping, Lynchburg is in a completely dry county, hard to believe. Then we went for a walk through the Tennessee woodlands. The next day we got up early and drove to Nashville for a walk around and to ... read more

Mexico City, 31th of July, 2005 On Tuesday I was on Japan Airlines and after two hours of waiting (almost in front of the doors of his office), the director of the company T. Hayashi, finally accepted me. He was really nice and he has one of the coolest offices that I have ever seen! “Boy, I like your mission and your enthusiasm, but unfortunately we cannot give you a free ticket. We will think about a discount,” he finished our conversation. It disappointed me a little, since I explained to him in details, how Japan Airlines could benefit from my presence in the Mexican media. So, on Tuesday the wild hunt on sponsors started. I was all around and it seems almost impossible to get any sponsors from the companies here around. The fight goes ... read more

This is just a quick post to share my excitement of the past few days! The BIG news is that I just bought my first car!!!(well besides Happy the VW rabbit I shared with Juan! Oh, Happy, where are you?) It is a 2000 VW Beetle (yes that is a picture of her). She does not yet have a name, but she is divine! She is a 5-speed bubble. That is how it feels inside. Tall people don't be afraid to come visit me, because there is plenty of room (Daren fits better in my car than most he rides in!) In other news, Daren finally found his dream job (we hope) so it looks like we will be here in Tennessee for awhile. Family and Friends - that means you have to come visit! Honestly, ... read more

Well, thanks for the support all of you who commented on my blog. Glad to know the last one was such a hit, not sure that this one will compete, but at least you´ll know what´s going on with me. I see that there has been a request to add photos, I will attempt to bring some up from snapfish, or maybe, if I can find an internet cafe with a usb port (sometimes supprisingly hard to find), then I will bring some up right off my camera. As it is I need to upload them before cuba, cuz I´m running out of space. So, where to begin. I said goodbye to my family, they were so nice, they gave me a present! how sweet, I only stayed with them for two weeks. Chiapas was nice, ... read more

At long last we are back home again. We ended our road trip, right where it started, in the garage! No road was travelled twice... one big loop through five provinces and ten states. We spent our last two days driving from Madison Wisconsin to Yale Michigan and then on to Home. We got a good start out of Madison, thinking that hitting Chicago around noon would be good for traffic. I guess there is no good time to hit Chicago as there are far too many people there with cars. Between the usual congestion and the summer construction season it took awhile to get through. The I-90 goes straight through so when you're stuck in traffic, at least you've got plenty to look around at. I think next time, I'll fly though and avoid the ... read more
