LOCATION: Camden to Acadia Camden Hills SP was a lovely area and we hoped to hike and bike, but the rain got in the way. We walked through Camden in the early morning. Camden is a harbor town built on a river and has a panoramic view of Pennobscot Bay, cute little shops, etc. We drove back to Camden Hill SP and up to Mt. Battie and tried to get some photos, a bit foggy and rainy. Undaunted we continued onto Belfast (guess how it got it’s name) another harbor town with wonderful shops. Off we continued to Acadia NP for the night. The song “A Rainy Night in Georgia” doesn’t quite make it, actually it was pouring all night. It was nice to be warm and dry in our little cocoon, the Bothan. ... read more

After the rain let up, I decided to walk to Puerto Angel just to get out of the cabana and to get some exercise. The walk from Zipolite to Puerto Angel is quite dangerous. Derek told me of a time he was hit by a car walking to his job at the university. He wasn't seriously injured, but to be hit by a car....scary. I walked along the road to Zipolite, about a 2 mile trek, mostly uphill and with sharp curves in the road. Many of the locals walk this every day, and I met many of them along the way. I watched in wonder as people rode past me on bicycles on these steep hills. I walked out to the pier and eventually started talking to a local fisherman. I was ecstatic to be ... read more

I woke up this morning to even more rain. So much for a walk on the beach this morning! Bridgett made me a stout cup of cafe con leche that I drank in my cabana, still wondering what the hell I was doing there. No TV to watch while I drank my coffee, no email to check. The only sounds were that of waves crashing on the beach, locals chit-chatting in the street, and some roosters crowing in the distance. After a while, the rain let up and I took a walk on the beach. A dog joined me for my walk along the beach. (There are many stray dogs in Zipolite, as there are no vets to spay or neuter the animals here.) He stopped everytime I stopped and stayed right with me all the ... read more

Today we got an early start and drove up the California coast on Highway 1. San Luis Obispo to Monterey on a mostly 2 lane, very curvy highway. Thankfully, there wasn’t a lot of traffic, so we didn’t get stuck behind anyone. The combination of tight curves and a sheer drop-off one lane away made Mom pretty skiddish of the drive. I loved it, though! It was like a game, trying to take the curves just slow enough that Mom wouldn’t freak, but fast enough that they felt like I had to work for them. Have I mentioned yet that I love to drive? Anyway, we made a couple stops along the way. One was at the Whale Watcher Café in Gorda. We grabbed some food and I got some really cool flower pics. We also ... read more

DAY ONE: Okay, the time was 1:42pm - Elvis FINALLY left the building. This is where our road trip began. Now, before all of you ask us why we got such a “late” start, let us remind you that neither of us is on any sort of time schedule, at least not one that is as austere and regimented as we apparently led y’all to believe. Between Beth’s three finals on Monday and a last minute paper due my midnight (turned in at 11:51p.m.) and Kathryn getting so ill that some were speculating that perhaps the bubonic plague was making an ill-timed comeback. The Group (subsequently will be referred to as “The Girls”) decided that we would leave whenever the mood struck. The mood struck at 1:42 pm. Well, that’s when we left Beth’s driveway… ... read more

Day 1. Boston to Hawaii. Kids these days. No doubt about it. Time and Newsweek are right. Kids these days are fat. This was unfortunately the most lasting impression of our first twelve hours of travel--nine of which were spent at 34-thousand feet with with the Rollo, Missouri high school marching band. While we offer these Fighting Bulldogs congratulations for earning the privilege of marching in Honolulu's Kamehameha Day Parade this coming Saturday, we were alarmed that 90 of the 100 band members were clearly overweight, and the majority downright obese. Granted, marching band isn't exactly an athletic activity, but it does not bode well for the U.S. that our nerds of tomorrow will be spending more and more time dealing with diabetes, exhaustion, and obesity's concomitant cardiac conditions, and less and less building labor-saving robots ... read more

So here we are in Skagway, AK- finally at the end of our motor-powered journey, and on the cusp of beginning a longer, human-powered journey: the culmination of two years of planning and preparation. A brief recap of the past two weeks..... we left off with our arrival in Olympia, I believe. We spent six wonderful days in Olympia, WA, and in the course of that time, managed to completely overtake Meg and Cary's house and garage with expedition gear and food. Without their help and hospitality, we probably wouldn't have pulled it all together! We took some time to spend catching up with friends- dinners together, and a day of hiking, birding, and photography in the Olympic National Forest. As the week wore on, we increasingly put our noses to the grindstone, so to speak, ... read more

This has gotta be my last entry (ever?) since I'm back home now which means my adventure in China is over. To Sum Up My Experience: Only In China, I... *Spent the night in a tent at the base camp of Mount Everest. *Rode a camel through the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang. *Partook in a massive snowball fight on Heavenly Mountain. *Took in all of China from atop the massive Great Wall. *Luged down the Great Wall. *Went scuba diving at a National Coral Reserve in Hainan. *Saw the Potala Palace, and the tombs of many past Dalai Lama. *Watched monks in the middle of a heated debate in a monastery in Lhasa. *Spent hours hiking around Hangzhou only to stumble upon a real, functioning Daoist compound with mom and dad. *Avoided a dinner ceremony involving ... read more
