Spent the morning walking the beach and watching the locals. Climbed the rocks on the west end of the beach nearest to Roca Blanca and picked up some shells to take home to Jolie. Walked to Puerto Angel again to visit Derek at the university (Universidad Del Mar) and met some of his co-workers: Tony (from Barbados & Canada), Peter from England, Jillian who is from Colorado, and Bennie from Texas. (Big dumb Texas, as Derek says). Later on in the day, I went with Delia and Samuel in a collectivo taxi to Pochutla. Pochutla (Derek hates it and calls it "Poop-chute-la") is a little town about 7 miles from Zipolite, where there are is a market. Delia needed some things to make pies for a little get-together they were having. Walking back to the beach, ... read more

It was 107 degrees today here in Vegas. It’s a dry heat, but still, 107 makes normally cool white cement scalding. Getting to the pool past the numerous lounge chairs poolside is comic, and the bottoms of my feet are going to peel. After a margarita or two I took to just walking across the tops of empty loungers instead of using the ground. After parking myself in Jen and Dorothy’s room until someone would go down to the pool with me, I finally convinced them, and before long, nearly all of us had re-gathered at one of the pools for a day of just hanging out. It was great. Drinking margaritas, coronas, and just hanging out catching up was so much fun. We had some nice company too, Rob and Dan, who graciously offered us ... read more

LOCATION: Acadia to Lubec, ME Acadia NP. Again we thought we would do some hiking but it was a downpour all day. So we drove into Bar Harbor and did the tourist thing for a while. We visited the Abbee Museum, a Native American Museum of the area , quite interesting. We continued our drive to the Eastermost town in the US---Lubec, ME. We drove out to view the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the easternmost point of land in the USA. The winds had to be 50 mph plus, and the rain was steady, we tried to get some photos. Then on we forged to a campground for the evening. The wind is incredible as we are perched above the sea, watching a crazy man dig for clams in the wind and rain. Good-night. ... read more

After getting soaked and a bit saddle sore in San Cristobal we decided to hit the beautiful Carribbean coast early and await Gemma´s arrival... Lucky for us we bumped into someone we met last year on holiday who kindly put us up in a really clean and comfortable hotel at a very discounted rate (hostel prices!)...and more importantly, in the heart of all the night life and fun... With only 1 minute to the beautiful beach with white sand and light blue seas we managed to spend a good few days swimming and sunning, making the most of it all and getting excited about Gemma´s arrival! Gemma arrived on the 13th June and we took her straight to the beach to enjoy an ice cold Chelada (beer with fresh lime, ice and salt around the rim ... read more

I had trouble figuring out how all this works, but starting to make progress. Joined into a meeting of about 10 folks from the surrounding areas (Havertown, Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, and Bala Cynwyd; just outside Philly). It's interesting how people give and receive information. Someone makes a statement that is not clear to me (and others), but sees no problems with the communication himself. How do you get through the day? Is normal for the region or is it just me? My mom is of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. She frequently speaks in partial sentences. I've been dealing with her for years so I get it. Makes me more aware of how I may be perceived to other. Maybe I need to slow down a bit.... read more

Day 36 Ash Grove, MO to Houston, MO Total Miles: 114.5 (2437.9miles to date) We (I) decided we really wanted to make some serious miles today to make up for yesterday and so we could make the Ozark climbing shorter by breaking it up over 2 days so we made our big goal Houston, MO. Yes it was 114miles away and it’d be a huge day with some climbing but we went for it. Long story short it worked out and we made it just before the sun went down. Highlights of the day included more dog attacks against which even Spanish could not help us, meeting a lot of cyclists, and incredible heat and humidity. We ended up meeting a 15-member group of cyclists that were being “guided” on their way across the country on ... read more

I felt a lot better in the morning. Dunno what it was the night before, but some cola and a good night’s sleep (sleeping in an extra 2 hours) did the trick! Mom and I checked out of the hotel and then went our separate ways; her on a taxi to the airport, me back in my car and further up the coast. It was good to get some personal space back. The drive up to Crescent City was really nice. I went through a bit of the wine country, with vines stretching out for rows and rows. Then I entered the National Redwood Forest. Wow. It was like driving through another world at some points. The best part was when there was a 2 mile stretch where the trees were so tall and so close ... read more
