Today was to be the start of our “Glacier National Park Adventure!” Our thought was that the weather would be least intrusive early in the morning (Maria had encountered this phenomenon while climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro) so we should start early and see how far we could get. The other consideration was that part of the “going to the sun road” will be closed on September 18th - talk about cutting it close to the wire!! Unfortunately, it was not to be… Statistics Starting Destination: West Glacier, Montana Ending Destination: Kalispell, Montana Ending Destination GPS: N: 48° 10.989 W: 114° 18.408’ Elev: 2961’ Miles Driven: Not enough… (-40.7) Seen: Lots of bike paths and the most bikes Carl has ever seen at a school… Going Backwards… Everything was... read more

Managed to endure a 4 hour bus ride to San Diego, home of legendary anchorman Ron Burgundy. You may not of heard of him but he's kind of a big deal around here. We had heard of a hostel right on the beach but couldn't get in on the Monday probably as everywhere was packed out for Labor Day holidays so we stayed slightly further south at Ocean Beach for one night. It was cool but there was no drinking allowed after 11, what the f up with that??!! But it was ok cos we just took some beers down to the beach and sat round a fire while some locals were playing guitar, very SoCal dude. We did have to put up with a few wackos, one in particular wanted to know if we were ... read more

What's up folks?! Finally managed to find time to relax and catch up with the blog, we have been flying round like mentalists lately! As you may of read in the last blog, we made it to our hostel in West Hollywood where we spent just under a week. We were right in between Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard which was wasn't exactly glamourous as previously imagined, but silver lining, it's where all the cool bars were! Unfortunately everywhere in California closes at 01:30 but we did go to the famous Canters Deli on Fairfax for a 3AM breakfast (Thanks Chantal!) Most evenings we would sit on the patio chatting (Yo Mark) with some tinnies before going out or going to the in-house bar for double rum and cokes at a $1 each, which helped both ... read more

Thank the lord in heaven, I finally made it to a Starbucks and a wifi connection. The downside is I had to pay $4 for a two hour block. But $4 is a friggin blessing for high speed internet compared to what I've had available to me these past few weeks. It's amazing. You just click on a link and the page just opens instantly. Unbelievable. I'm catching up on all of my downloading tonight. ... read more

I got up real early to make it to the Western Union first thing and I noticed some people had come in really late last night into the dorm. One was already awake and his name was Hiro - he had Japanese heritage to his credit but he was born in Mexico. He was in Santa Monica just a few weeks out from studying biochemistry at UCLA. I chatted to him as I checked out a workmate’s MySpace. We both laughed when I tried to close it down but KillSwitch Engage blared out through the PC speakers, possibly waking up the rest of the hostel. After checking email (without the inhabitancies of the Aussie nerds playing poker), I ventured down to the Western Union on 4th St, just two blocks up from the hostel. As ... read more

As you all know, Shawne and I are riding our bicycles from San Diego to the Florida Keys. (Yes, our "pedal bikes"!) Though this is my third journey cross-country on a bicycle, it is Shawne's first, and I am both thrilled and proud to be by his side. We acquired our maps through Adventure Cycling, and are prepared to depart on September 20th to San Diego. We hope to hit the road by the 23rd. We are taking few creature comforts, but the gear we have will leave us more than comfortable on our trek. It is odd that a journey's beginning consists of many a goodbye. Our goodbye was a party with as many dear friends and family attending as possible. The party took place at Toad's Bar in Carson City, NV, and it was ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 22. 1st -12th September 2006 Nova Scotia - Cape Breton to The Bay of Fundy and ghostly ships Bright rose hips are gathering in the hedgerows and maple leaves are showing their first signs of change; those pale shades of yellow and chestnut brown, as we pass along the highway. Fall will be with us all too soon but we must mark time for a while to fulfil our plans to reach New England and the blaze of colour dreamed of for so long. Winnie was booked in for minor maintenance at Adventure Sports at Dartford, just outside Halifax, in the caring hands of Dave’s men, Scott and Michael. Whilst we waited, Janice came with me to the gent’s barbers - just to make sure they cut it short enough to ... read more

I am heading back to Florida the day after tomorrow. I am really going to miss this place. My friend Gretchen came out and we had a good time sightseeing. I rented a car for the time she was here. I picked her up at the Sacramento Airport and we drove straight to Point Montara to meet up with Heather and Mark. The Point Montara hostel is so relaxing. After we all went out to dinner at a great restaurant in Half Moon Bay (it was the same restaurant that Heather and I discovered last winter when we visited…they have the best butternut squash ravioli), we went back to the hostel to sit outside on a cliff overlooking the ocean and drink some wine Heather brought for me. Gretchen and Mark were tired, so it ended ... read more

Untitled2001 Honda ST1100 THE ADVENTURES OF “RT & ST” THE ABILENE TOUR SEPTEMBER 2006 Our real tour starts when we cross the Brazos River. The problem is we are parked near the banks of Village Creek just South of I-30. Some freeway running is needed to escape this concrete jungle known as D/FW Metro Mess. Allow me to introduce myself and my running buddy. My official model designation is Honda ST1100, but I go by names such as ST Eleven, Pan European, Sport Touring or just “ST”. My running buddy, you will see in the following photos, is a BMW R1100RT sometimes called Beemer, Oil Head, or just “RT”. Please excuse his Stainetune exhaust rumble and popping. You might say this is not our first rodeo. We have seen lots of two lane highways in Arkansas, ... read more
